Steam OS(9 posts)
Is it what you were expecting?
I may be mistaken, but I think a whole OS dedicated to game could improve the performance of games so much that I'm excited without even seeing the damn thing
Yeah your right, it will improve performance since its an OS dedicated to games.
I just hope it brings all the functionality and compatibility that windows does, I dont want to have to have a separate gaming rig for games that only work on windows and games that only work on the Steam OS.
come on man ...everyone was actually expecting half life 3.
Before I get excited I will have to see developers actually make games for SteamOS. Sure it can stream my Windows/Mac games from my other PC, but I want to see this platform becoming the PC gaming OS. At the moment this is just a nice OS to put on a media box in the living room and not what I am looking for.
HL3 is coming, be patient ;) probably as a steam OS exclusive to, or with Steam OS exclusive content... which I hope for, I want HL3 on windows for now until I see how developers handle the Steam OS.
The big thing is that MS has treated gaming on Windows as second class, and this might put some worry and concerns into MS forcing them to take action.
Even if this OS just streams games from your Windows PC, MS is not going to be happy about people buying another OS to play their games on, and eventually SteamOS could be a threat to gaming on Windows. IF Valve gets SteamOS to where it's performance is equal or better than Windows, gets more developers to support OPENGL or whatever they use, and keeps improving on features and abilities, this could put the hurt on MS being the defacto standard for PC gaming eventually, but not anytime soon.
This will be just like Steam was, where it starts off as "ok" and got much better over time.
First announcement Steam OS, Second announcement SteamBox Reveal, Third announcement..... You know... That game thats been missing that number 3 for a while now.
I'm really excited for this SteamOs, its about time someone took away the PC gaming from Windows, MS doesn't seem to care at all anymore. And if its really as optimized as they say it is, its going to become a direct competitor to the Xbone and Ps4, having Custom (affordable?) hardware that outperforms (both of them together?) And in the living room. Turning your TV into a computer/media platform. No more annoying "format isn't supported" when trying to watch something on your consoles. Possibly a Box you can upgrade over time, without having to dish out money for a new edition every 7 years. I am all up for this. Wipe the floor with Sony and Microsoft, bring gaming back to the normal pace it was at back when PC was still its primary focus. No more "gens" that hold back innovation for years. Advancing whenever new tech allows you to.
All hail Gaben, our lord and savior.
Great hopes with Steambox and their Steanux
I really rejoice at seeing an open source being finally cared for and Valve brought points that seem to have a chance to align very well with demand in many ways, though it might be too early to say, this is only my impression of his conference and latest thread about Gaben/steambox.
I wait with eager more specs, details, and marketing solutionS.
