I think some people are blowing this out of proportion a little, I mean come on has multiplayer become the main component of games these day, don't get me wrong I wanted to do some multiplayer action this bank holiday weekend but that's what singleplayer is for.
So everyone chill out, play some mass effect or dragon age or any of the other quality single player games out their, they will probably have this sorted soon I hope

"I mean come on has multiplayer become the main component of games these day"
No, but in the console world it's something new for average Joe so multiplayer component is very important in this 7th gen.
Personally, i started playing games long time ago when consoles didn't had any multiplayer at all (or they didn't had decent multiplayer games such as Half-Life 1, Unreal tournament 1-2004, Quake 1,2,3, counter-strike and etc.) and for me this outage is nothing special.thats why you see a lot of hate.

most 1 player games suck unless they are role playing. At least playing online is refreshing and more challenging....get with the times buddy
PSN failPosted 2 years ago # -
Multiplayer refreshing? Most online gamers play FPS with the most basic gameplay mechanics, how is that refreshing?
Posted 2 years ago # -
So, I guess this is suppose to mean you are not one of the popular kids unless you play multiplayer? That's okay by me. I never wanted to hang with those dullards in high school anyway :D :D :D :D

Erthazus, to be fair the online modes in Q Arena and Ut were a joke compared to todays games, while you still have to aim the crosshair and shoot, the gameplay has been taken to a whole new level. Consoles 've had excellent omp since early 2000s, such as Tribes inspired Halo and Timesplitters.

"to be fair the online modes in Q Arena and Ut were a joke compared to todays games,"
someone give me that joke in this generation please! Everyone stil use Q Arena and UT for cybersport. So no, not even close to the mechanics, speed, precision and gameplay which is super perfect.
Unreal Tournament 2004 is still the best running and gunning multiplayer game ever created in the history of gaming. This is the only game where you can learn how to jump on the walls by doing special tricks. The one game that did everything right from Assault modes, to the typical Deathmatches.
" such as Tribes inspired Halo "
Tribes didn't inspired Halo (or inspiration was super small). It was exactly UT who did this job and still kicks ass to this date (except for UT3).
We were at this subject about Halo. My opinion and other guys is the same as before: It's overrated slow multiplayer game with poor and slow UT mechanics in it. For me even Call Of repetition is much better. At least it has that old Quake 3: Arena feel to it with modern guns. (Of course, because it is made on the Id Tech 3)Posted 2 years ago # -

Even if it's true that mouse aiming is better, that's the only leg for you to stand on.
Compare Invasion in Reach with CTF. Compare maps. Modes. Sorry, it's not about average Joe, it's about better games.
Halo wasn't inspired by Ut at all, even if the game is closer to that than something such as CoD. Bungie are a veteran dev who's been making fps for longer than Epic. Sorry. Halo was highly inspired by Tribes: open landscape maps, and positioning on them. vehicles and jetpacks. Ut didn't even got vehicles until much later on. Fact. Halo Reach is pretty much the pinnacle of modern Tribes, then again you haven't played a single Halo game so..
'Slow Ut', funny... that's the point, it was console Tribes.
Ut doesn't kick anyone's ass, Both Q Arena and Ut were lame games, with incredibly shallow gameplay and twitch mechanics. It was just about who aims the better, while Halo is about who plays the better.
I know, although I've never heard that kind of 'opinion' from anyone but you and Sony fanboys. Feel free to believe what you want, and prefer any game. Point here being is that omp is nothing new for consoles either.
CoD is shit as well, but that's beside the point. Although it's engine is as much of Quake 3 one as Half Life 2 is the original id tech.
Actually, regarding Tribes similarities, I could make a list.
open landscapes, with deliberately slowed down gameplay highly based on positioning on them, multitude of approaches to combat uncomparable to just running around and who aims the best in Ut
banshee - shrike
wraith - beowulf
jetpacks in Reach seals it really
If you play BTB in Halo, it instantly becomes obvious how similar they're.
Ut had practically zero to do with anything Halo related, the rechargeable shields (incidentally used in Tribes too). the motion tracking sensors came from Marathon. The setting was very similar to old Bungie games as well. Nothing, nothing was inspired by Ut.

I like Halo, it's my favourite competitive shooter but it's no longer enough to keep me paying for XBL, after the first DLC came out for Reach, I just gave up on my 360 altogether so I pawned my 20gb pro off for $100 & used that to buy MGS4, Resistance 2, Uncharted 1 & 2 & Killzone 2.

UT was better than UT2004
Posted 2 years ago # -
The only online games are first person shooters..?
I guess I better stop playing Mortal Kombat, Super Street Fighter 4,Red Dead Redemption, Motorstorm Apocalypse, LittleBigPlanet 2, Rock Band 3 and Assasin's Creed: Brotherhood then...

^^Yeh, you should give up on all those games, what a disappointment for thinking outside the box, you should be ashamed.

Q]|[A - best only fps ever made by mankind.
i play shooter games for shooting and moving. Quake and UT mastered gunplay and movement, still unrivaled to this very day.
CS also has very good gunplay and ok movement. easy to learn, hard to master.
modern fps are a joke in comparison. they are just easy to learn. end of.Posted 2 years ago # -
The depth in CS was/is by far the best in any FPS. More so because once you die, you sit out till next round, meaning that your tactics can't be as balls out. But I played the game for like 2-3 years solidly and I was good, really very good at times but there were still people around who could just mop the floor with me, despite the fact I could go into a public server and top it every time.
Though the thing with CoD is that it's a mainstream commercial product, not a hardcore fan made product, so they want to make it like every can stand a chance, which you can respect as it makes it fun for everyone.

If you want to move crosshair and strafe then by all means those asinine games like Q3 and Ut would be the best, if you want gameplay centered on multiple approaches and erm, at least minimal situational awareness then they have been superseded multiple times.
If I wanted to test my reflexes I'd play Bayonetta, Ninja Gaiden or Street Fighter.

Guys any news when the PSN should be getting back?, it has been almost five days out,i was planing to play battlefield, assasins creed and maybe marvel vs capcom 3. T_T, like always the people that suffer the consecuences of a war, are the ones that are not involve in it.

Changing system hardware is not a simple task and then you have to install software, etc its not just plug in and run type of thing. Have to wonder how much of the system they are rebuilding to take 5 days.

hunam, pretty much the same history on CS here.
DaMan; Situational awareness, realy?
seems u never played Quake or CS if u dont see that in those games.
tbh, quake 1on1 is the very definition of situational awareness.
you need to think much faster then in COD. u need to be 100 percent aware of absolutely everything in every fragment of every second or u loose.
red armor spawns 1 second earlier then u thought? Chance is high u gonna loose befcause of this.
made the wrong decision wich weapon u need exactly now and not half a second later? High chance of loosing. mistimed the rocket jump by 0.1 seconds? Yep, u will loose.
CS i admit has a lot more in common with COD gameplay wise, and to be fair, i never played COD to a compareable extend as ive played CS (not even remotely) but in COD u can be aware as fuck, if luck isnt on your side chances are high u gonna loose. The perk system spoils awareness. u cant be aware of what ur not able to know.
CS is much more determed, u can be aware of what ur aenemy is able to do and what not. theres noone running arround with doubled nades or more firepower or whatnot.
U and ur gun vs him and his gun. Hes as fast as u, has the same hp and firepower. Well defined. u can anticipate almost every action of ur enemy. CoD fails in that regard massively.
And COD, yeah, wait: "hmm im getting shot imn the back. Maybe i should look after that. aright, lets see. Ah, this little bugger shots me, im gonna spray back. Yeah killed u mofo!"
yes, there is situational awareness... CS would be "hmm im getti.." *dead*
oh yeah, i forgot, UAV awareness is important... not"If I wanted to test my reflexes I'd play Bayonetta, Ninja Gaiden or Street Fighter."
that just prooves my point.
aiming and reactions are not more then the basics of those games.
with only that u wont get far.
you need to think much more on a meta level. sure without reactions ur dont even need to start playing the game at all, but after all u need to be aware of the situation. thats the crucial part what makes u win or loose, not ur aiming skills.
those maybe make u top public servers, but public isnt how this game is ment to be played. the game is so so much more then rushing b spot, dealing 3 headshots and getting taken out by random grenade..oh well that wasnt planned to get this long.
On Topic: as far as im concerned, i must admit it quite amuses me :D
im happily playing mk9 sp modes and couch 1on1s atm.Posted 2 years ago # -
Nobody mentioned CoD, since it's centered around the same masturbatory sequences anyway, if only dumbed down. besides nice try cherry picking 1 on 1 mode, any game comes down to who aims the better if your playing vs single opponent, Pickard ;).
'aiming and reactions are not more then the basics of those games.
with only that u wont get far.'
that's amusing. Why on earth would a game like Halo have the same aiming and movement, when you *suck* at it if you 're getting into one on one face to face combat that often!
Why, yes even CoD requires better skills with the aim. Who are you arguing with again?
Meta level, lol.
It's like saying Wolf 3d had the tightest camera, no argument here
With Halo you have the landscape relief, you have the vehicles playing a huge role in the overall game, the rechargable shields. Highly dependent on team gameplay. The side with better collaboration wins every single time. every. Halo is exactly that, easy to learn, hard to master. Anyone can get as much out of the game as their skills go.
Play BTB or Invasion, run around trying to duel guys. it's no wonder all the Q Arena folks are being served the moment you play on an outdoor map in Halo. because they 're one trick ponies, Quake depth is one dimensional, that's the point.
Say i spotted you from behind, and shoot you, wearing the shield down. You can evade behind relief, refill and counter attack. You can outmaneuver enemies who aim better than you, when in Q Arena it's all about who spend the most time getting carpal tunnel syndrome. Pretty much every single encounter ends in a matter of a second or two, since the weapons kill uncomparably faster. That and who collects the armor, which is nothing but an incredibly cheap and basic way of complicating the game. unless you have classes (like medic), the games moved from that asinine stuff ages ago.
Halo is 'much more that that'. It's about who 's in the right place on the map at the right time. Who 's better awareness, the right weapon at the right time, including assassinations.
I 've been around when all the guys at school played it, I 've seen the 'hardcore' playing these games with graphics details set to beyond minimum. Sums up the game perfectly. because it's everything about aim and WASD. You don't even have to know the maps as well as just knowing where your opponent is atm. There's zero depth aside from the carpal tunnel inducing manipulations.
It's like 2d Sonic vs 90s Tomb Raider, the latter was also a platforming game but took the gameplay onto a whole different level.
what point? I said i don't play fps for the aiming, which is why CoD is off the list as well.
.Btw try playing Slayer DMRs with some of the MLG folks, you'll see how fast the k/d will be at 0.5. Probably lower.
