   I'm looking for a nice, easy to learn but hard to master pick-up-&-play tennis game for my X360. It's for when I have friends over for a bit of one-on-one versus action, to compliment our staple diet of of fighting and split-screen racing games (and Worms, natch).

   There's only two choices really (I'm *very* surprised that EA Sports doesn't have a tennis title) - Sega's Virtua Tennis 4 and 2k Sports' Top Spin 4. Yes, I'm aware that Virtua Tennis 4 has yet to be released, but still...

   I'm inclined to pick Virtua Tennis 'cos (a) the GFX are nicer and (b) it sounds a bit more arcadey - I am definitely *not* looking for a sim style game.

   So... your thoughts? Anybody got any insight to share?

   PS: No, I am not interested in PES/Fifa or any golfing game.

   I have Top Spin 3+4 and Virtua Tennis 2009, haven't played VT4. Preferred Top Spin 3 over VT2009 and find TS4 better than TS3.

   TS is more of a sim title, but they've modified their control scheme so it's much easier to get in to. I found the VT control scheme frustratingly limited, the AI retarded and some of the player behaviours annoyingly unrealistic, especially on the stretch.

   Top Spin graphics are fine btw, and the motion capture is frankly amazing in TS4.

   I don't think either series does split screen, which is really frustrating as it's so much harder playing from the far side of the net, so I'm not sure either game will suit you.

   EA did do a tennis game btw, the wii-only Grand Slam Tennis 2009.

   WOOT?! Well I just played the demo and this game looks totally aweful! I couldn't even recognize all of the players although I'm a tennis fan :/ From what I've seen of VT4 it looks a lot better.

   meh, maybe some of the facial models of the pro players aren't great, but when you're in a match and he's a tiny guy on the other side of the court all that matters in the way he moves, and in Top Spin 4 the players move really well. if you play Roger Federer he doesn't just have a one-handed backhand, he has that snap that makes it Roger Federers one-handed backhand.

   I'll reserve judgement on VT4 until I've played it, but the trailers don't look very far removed from previous iterations of the franchise tbh.

   Virtua Tennis 4 DOES have splitscreen, and has full Move functionality, much better than the horrific support in TS4. It has also a far more expansive career mode, while TS4 is more of a pure match-by-match tennis game in comparison. Also, you can't judge by a game by its trailers (e.g. Mafia II, ugh) and much of the early trailers are based on early builds of the game. This is the first version of the game where the original Japanese developers have worked on the game since the excellent Virtua Tennis 2 (in 2001), so there will be numerous differences that an observant player will notice. For me personally, the Move functionality and other enhancements are reason enough to get the game. Just read the excellent Eurogamer preview on the game.

   It also has kinect support, but sega does not push it as much as move. I hope they'll rethink their plans for the demo if psn will keep down :/

   For all that VT4's Career mode is more varied, Top Spin 4 plays a better game of tennis, which is kind of important in a tennis game. And the use of Move in VT4 - fun though it is - is restricted to a single play mode; it doesn't really have "full Move functionality".
