Looks like.

On Saturday my wife returns home from her hunt for new work clothes with a Gamestop bag. Inside was a replacment xbox360, a data transfer cable and F1 2010.

As a few of ya know my 3rd xbox died a bit back. I was only able to play digital stuff, as the disc reader was its demise.

So she got me a 4Gig arcade unit and a 250Gig insert, as the stores were sold out of 250G systems that didn't have a Kinect bundled inside.

Anyways long story short, I'll be back on LIVE again. Still playing PC too of course, as well as a game here and there for PS3.

But this gen my ship is xb360. Like my wife said we have too much invested in it to not have one working. Also, and she is right, any system that gets as much use as the xbox360 has this gen would wear out too. Online or offline, my system is often on 8-10hours plus a day. Not making excuses, I loath MS for its "high quality" xb360 hardware, but stuff wears out.

Next gen I will be selecting one and only one system, I hope. BC will greatly impact that selection. If all of my games and accompaning DLC works on the next xbox, I will prolly go there. If not, prolly Sony(so long as it doesn't take Sony too long to launch and their launch prices are reasonable.

Till then you dance with the girl your came with. So game on.

On the subject of BC, I think that will be a very sticky issue for Sony next gen.

I can see the next Xbox being 100% native BC for the following reasons:

* All 360 software is fully DirectX compliant.
* MS wholely own the 360 GPU rights. The prime reason BC had to be emulated last time was due to MS not owning the rights to original Xbox GPU.
* MS won't gamble on pointless exotic hardware so an evolution of the current multicore + GPU setup is pretty likely for next gen.

Sony are in a bit of a bad place for BC next gen though.

There's very little chance they will stick with the current Cell + GPU setup. If they repeated the mistakes of the PS3 with respect to the developer community, by going with another new pointlessly complex setup, I think the backlash would result in a lot of devs abandoning the platform altogether. It's also very embarrasing for Sony to be in the perpetual situation of having the weakest multiplatform titles.

Most of the Sony first party developers have had to code directly to the hardware to maintain performance so unless they include the PS3 hardware in the PS4 there's little to no chance of BC for the vast majority of the first party catalog.

PSN games stand a much better chance of being BC as they will be largely API compliant, but Sony have already set a precident with a big 'fuck you, your old games are worthless' in the form of the first couple of PS3 revisions, so I wouldnt count on them caring whether gamers have access to any of thier current catalog.

This is of course if Sony bother making another console at all. The PS3 was funded by the vast reserves left behind by the PS2. The PS3 gobbled all that up and shat out a monster deficit. It's a moderately profitable platform now, but there most definitely wont be a large reserve when the PS3 is retired, as there was last gen.

BC is a valuable feature and will be a big issue next gen. I know I'd hate to be without BC as I still frequently play old xbox games like Burnout 3, Flatout and of course the daddy, Halo:CE.

My PS3 would probably get more than double it's current use if I could play the golden era of Playstation games like Kingdom Hearts, SSX Tricky and the good Final Fantasies.

Welcome to the World of Tomorrow! Again... WB, OG! Keeping fingers crossed that you get to transfer everything. I am on my 4th Hard Drive. 2 Transfers couldn't complete, due to "corrupt files" and 2 transfers worked like a charm..hope your on the charm side!

Thnx Stolen and Deacon. Hate to have had her spend the money, but nice to have xb360 back.

Damn Frosty that stinks, about having the corrupt files. I already made my transfer, everything went smooth. I am going to hand down my 250G old style HDD to my youngest son.

Gad you make some good points about next gen BC. Some really good points. I hope everything is fully BC next gen. I would lose very little for Wii(mostly VC stuff), and would lose a couple of things for PS3. None of it stuff I couldn't live w/o. But for xb360, thats a different ballgame.

So many arcade games, plus I have a few games on demand titles too. And not to mention the stupid amount of DLC(rockband says hi), I'd hate to lose out on that. Plus TV shows, we don't have cable, so we netflix and buy the stuff we want(like Supernatural, Smallvile) from XBLIVE marketplace.

I hope it is as easy as buying new hardware and recovering your gamertag/account to it for the next gen.

The difficulty for Sony and BC next generation is the Cell. Everything else is doable. I wouldn't put it past them to include the chip in some way in the PS4. However it's extra cost - and I think it's more likely BC would be dropped if it comes down to it.

MS is in a much better position for the next round, not just relative to Sony but relative to where they were at the start of this round too. The one fly in their soup is going to be consumer wariness of being an early adopter.

Glad to see your gaming on a console again...sad to see you making excuses for the consoles failure. My PS3 is on 17-18hrs a day and it still functions like brand new. My Sega Genesis saw 10yrs of 5hrs + everyday (i have 2 siblings that are both gamers and grew up only 2yrs apart from me) and i can still play on it now. My NES still works, witht the blowing method, but still works. My PS1 still works. My Xbox1 still works. My Dreamcast still works.... all have seen hours upon hours of gameplay and still work.....no excuses OG. No excuses....

And I agree fellas, 100%. My SNES, Gen, TG16, Dreamcast are all set up right now in my Den. All working great, and still getting played here and there. So no excuses at all.

However,

Its cheaper to buy an xbox then it is to replace my games libary. And I have zero gaurentee that my PS3 won't bite the dust if it gets as much use as my xb360 does. Gotta remember too, my wife plays games, and like me, her games are on xb360.

In the end I hate the shoddy xb hardware, but its what where my games are. I can't go back to the launch of this gen and change my choices.

The original PS and PS2 weren't exactly bastions of reliability in my experience. My original PS was replaced in the first year and that one ended up needing to be used upside down in order for it to read discs properly. My PS2 had two failures as well. Obviously the 360 situation is generally in a different league to those, just saying :).

I remember the launch PSones well Doc. I was helping a friend open a Game store in Alaska, whilst my wife was stationed in the US Air Force. We used to have a line of upsidedown systems on our shelf. Customers thought we lost our minds. But they worked that way.

The trouble was that Sony denied the whole mess and wouldn't replace or fix anything without a 250plus usd fee + shipping. New systems cost 300usd. Put us into a pickle for sure.

My opinion has simply become that shit breaks. It just wears out after so many hours. I could see me buying/rebuying games for PS3, and having it die down the road anyways. I was going to drop a good 300usd on a new vid card for my PC, but when the wife brought home the xb360, I said "why not"?
