so my idea was = to havean option that automatically adds any articles we post in to be added to the my news section?
i dont use the my news section at all at the moment and i guess it would be good to be able to see what iv posted on quickly

I think one core problem with the site as a discussion area (apart from the Troll infestation) - is knowing and keeping track of news or forum threads you've commented on. It's all to easy for the rare interesting conversation to peter out because one of the participants has missed an update and it has fallen off the radar of latest comments.
The biggest problem I see with this site is that comments and conversations all too often desolve into school yard level spats. Where supossed grown ups act like obnoxious childern.
The commenting becomes not about the story or news pieces, but instead about twisting the words of a fellow poster, about dominating the thread, and about just trying to make the other guy sound fooloish.
It gets old sometimes.
Its just the way of the internet, I doubt it is anything that can be fixed. And I doubt it is going to chnage anytime soon.
Well i'd estimate around 80% of all the childish arguments revolve around the user Erthazus. Maybe someone could give him a 24 hr time out every time he posts a ridiculous opinion on a game that's clearly wrong and is just going to incite arguments.
Honestly though, I agree, it's just how the internet is. Almost every forum has an Erth, be it games, sport, films, or whatever. There's always someone being a wind-up merchant.
the comments here end almost 90 of the time in utter disaster.
erth is going to point out which version is the technicaly best, and calls every other version the biggest pile of shit ever created by entire mankind (and with how he does it clearly exposing his emotional inteligence is most likely non existing). then theres always someone picking this up and the shitstorm ensues

One thing which I dont know if is a bug or a 'feature' - logging in takes you back to the home page.
If you are logging in to comment on an older article it can be a pain to find it again.
Oh, yes and the recently viewed articles would be very useful. Or at least change the latest comments page to be unique by article (just show last post in each thread for example) and give a longer history.

When your on an article and decide to login so you can comment it takes you back to the homepage. So then you have to go find the article again :(

Can we have an ignore button please ? I know the devs have bleated about the strain on the database. Get some proper fucking devs then ! Stick a few indexs on the db ffs ! I'm a php dev, I'll do it for free to rid us of the fucking trolls that annoy us each personally. It really can't be that fucking hard even if it requires a bit of re-jigging.
Shouldn't make that much of a difference to the database anyway. Pull the ignore list for each user as they hit the site, hold it client side and then use Javascript to hide sections as appropriate.
I can't help thinking that the devs are going along the lines of...
SELECT COMMENTS FROM COMMENTSDB WHERE COMMENTS NOT BY IGNORED USER
...which obviously doesn't scale / cache that well. Is that how you guys did the EG comments ignore functionality? Nasty.

TTGOA: Check the Ignoring Users Hack thread. Pat has said a thousand times that it's not doable on the servers, and I'm trying to get a potential user side ignore feature sorted... which in its current states *does* allow you to ignore people on the forums at the very least.

Logging in and going back to the homepage is a bit annoying aswell.

It's pretty blatantly obvious that people would rather whine and whine and whine in the hope that they'll get what they want, when there's a perfectly valid alternative that could be working in a matter of days if someone like yourself bothered to help.
Pat said it isn't happening. He hasn't responded to a single post on the subject since that day. That should tell you everything you need to know. But hey, if you don't want to ever actually see the feature, that's entirely your choice.

The site runs on WordPress. WordPress doesn't have an ignore users function, no such plugin exists, and we don't have the resources to write something at the moment. Sorry, but it's not going to happen.

Want an ignore feature? Help out with the greasemonkey hack. It's convenient, easy, and puts no drain on the server.

The alternative to a comment section, where people have the possibility of jumping on other people (and perhaps more rarely those peoples comments) is a sanitized purgatory like Kotaku where every poster is basically the same 4chan.org-regurgitating, righteously indignant little girl.
I'll take trolls over a lobotomized userbase any day. A bit like how I'll take a democracy full of people abusing it like Fox News, over a socialist utopia where everybody is forced to agree, and be polite about it.
