So after 11 years we're back to the first game with a few more trappings, better graphics and a horribly cumbersome campaign map.
I can't help but think that it's kinda pathetic. And just when they were getting close to an era of warfare that would actually provide them with a chance to take it to the next level in terms of changing and improving the entire game.
They could have at least gone into the old chinese empire wars where each of the various empires made their own entire evolution of warfare in terms of their own unique strategies, tactics and technologies.
I guess it's impossible to pitch a quality wargame to anyone today, it's just sad that they haven't been able to pull themselves out of the rut.
I would give my right arm to command the Prussian army from the 1840's to the birth of the German empire. It's a fascinating untold story as well.

Well after playing the demo for all of 20 minutes, I have uninstalled it and came away totally unimpressed. I never had the original Shogun, the only one in the series but with so many bugs in the demo and given Sega/CAs track record with bugs in the previous 3 releases, I have cancelled my pre-order and wont be getting this at all.
Its about time Sega stopped using fans of the series as a) testers b) cash cows and created a decent product on release day.

Absolutely right. I'd recommend doing the same.
I played a bit of the original Shogun, but it wasn't until the first Medieval that I just wasted days and nights playing it. Rome was a nice entry into 3D, but ever since there's been absolutely no reason to pick up those games.
Bugs I can handle, as long as the product itself is solid and patchable. The problem is that even after all of these years, you're still just moving the same stupid bars around.
That's how strategy was envisioned on planning tables 2-300 years ago, but that was never how it actually worked or played out.
You might be able to break enemy cohesion to a limited extent, but you can't split your companies into smaller tactical units, and it's ultimately not nearly enough to be a satisfying war strategy in my opinion.
I got Empire as a gift and bought Napoleon on sale hoping to see some advanced tactics, but yeah, I've pretty much lost faith in what used to be one of my favourite series. Creative Assembly clearly just don't give a shit anymore.
