Simple as that.

PS2, obviously. Dreamcastlol! :-D
I forgot all about the Saturn until recently!
In my eyes perhaps even greater than the DC.
Good one Blerk! Always enjoyed your sense of humor. What? Oh wait your not kidding? Ok now your just being silly.
Deacon Saturn was home to some awesome games, but to me the entire concept of the modern day console was born in the DC. And it had PSO! But yea My Saturn collection is extensive too.
PC
nuff said
PC is not really a console tho.
ok...well....if we are speaking strictly plug and play home consoles and excluding PCs
I say PS3
Sure Dramcast had a better library with more variety and the same goes for Saturn and PS2. They did have more games to choose from. But if we take into account what they have to offer and the capabilities, PS3 is a badass machine.
Hulu plus, Vuduu, Netflix, Bluray, Multimedia (music, videos, HD videos in almost any format), Pictures, Online, PSN Games, PSN Movie library, upgradable hard drives, low failure rate, PS Move, Badass exclusive titles, Friends List and messaging, web browser, High Definition games, etc etc etc im tired of going on. Not to mention all the crazy shit that those Europeans get that we peeps in America dont.
I love my Dreamcast though. i have 65 original games for it :)
The SNES!!
Instant loading, a massive SIX buttons on the joypad, titles like Super Mario All Stars, A Link to the Past, Super Metroid, Street Fighter II, Starfox, F-Zero, etc, etc, etc...
Don't forget, that it was the SNES that made Sony want to get into the gaming market with the SNES CD, which eventually became the Playstation.
Every single Playsattion pad in the world is based off of the original SNES pad, and pretty much every other console in the world has stuck with the same basic d-pad and four button design for their controllers.
It was games like Mario that Sony tried to replicate with publishing titles like Crash Bandicoot... So it could be argued that the main SNES games are responsible for shaping companies like Naughty Dog who are now making games like Uncharted 3.
I would agree, SNES had the biggest influence at the start of the Gaming real gaming BOOM
Amstrad GX4000
The Dreamcast.
I know it's a really predictable answer, but there was something truly special about it, which puts it in a league of its own, one that has never been out-classed since.
At the time, the PS1 was still considered the highest standard on the market, so the jump in visual clarity that came was bigger than I think any console we've ever seen since.
Blocky, low resolution squares representing human beings suddenly became detailed character models with moving mouths an... *gasp*... fingers! Anyone who laid their eyes on Soul Calibur for the first time knows exactly what I mean. That was the game that sold me on it.
It's exclusives titles was exemplary. Unlike this generation, you *knew* those exclusive titles were games that simply couldn't have been done to that standard on any other formats on the market at the time. Neither the PS1 now the N64 had the power or storage to handle them.
Jet Set Radio. Shenmue. Soul Calibur. Power Stone. Skies of Arcadia. Bangai-O. Ikaruga. Rez. Phantasy Star Online. The Dreamcast's line-up was the stuff of legends. Even today, these titles hold up as quality gaming experiences.
It was also the first time online console gaming was truly opened up to a mainstream audience. I solely blame the PS2 for holding back the expansion of that particular advancement by years.
God, I could gush about the Dreamcast for hours.
Ill say Ps1, first console i owned at the tender age of 5 and i loved it
and all the classic games that came out on it like final fantasy, metal gear solid and *cough* crash bandicoot. And after all these years i still have it in working condition, wish the same could be said about my PS2 though lol
SNES
PS2. No competition.
@Timber-_-wolf
Wow, we have a young one here. PS1 at age of 5 :)
Thats great! I thought we all here were 24+ (except LOLshock, itsucks and backup)
@spiderlaw
you sound like a catholic priest there lol
Interesting thing to notice about such type lists. Of course peoples favs vary but the age of the poster matters greatly. if your old enough to live through all of the system launches, your going to have a hard time picking playstation anything over a snes, for example.
And if your young enough that your folks had to buy the system for your, you prolly owned a PS1/PS2 over a Dreamcast, and that would influence your choice. Unless you were an adult at the time, you likly never owned a Turbo Duo, and prolly couldn't name the endless wave of high quality JRPGS and Sidescrollers that graced that system.
As far as most important system in history it has to be the Atari 2600 or the NES. The most important gaming advancment in history - R.O.B. the Robot, without which Nintendo never could have gotten its NES on Toys r Us or other major retailers shelves. The stores thought video games were a fade and after the bust from atari/colleco/intelevison they were not interested in stocking them. Infact they were convinced they would never sell. So Nintendo didn't sell it as a video game, but an interactive toy name R.O.B. the Robot.
So many pivitol things like that. That a younger gamer might simply not know.
If you took people when they were kids, handed them a stack of begees songs, and never exposed them to any other bands, they would tell you years later, that they best songs ever made would be begees songs. Thats the Playstation for many of you. Its simply what you grew up with and prety much the only thing you have ever known. That type of thing makes a lasting impression.
Just saying it is interesting is all.
But I am with more then a few of you. Dreamcast all of the way. Best console, great controler, fantastic exclusive games, online gameplay. Magical. At the time, Playstation was just something that other people owned. I owned one too, but spent my gaming hours playing Marvel Vs Capcom, Cannon Spike, or PSO. I used to call a Playstation a game system for none gamers.
Just that perspective is everything.
Imagine 15 years from now someone on a website such as this debating the merrits of the Wii and how it changed gaming. Then think about the way you currently views/feel about the Wii - then you might get an idea of where I am coming from now.
360. Aside from the substantial reliability issues there is so much that it does right. Live, comms, demos, XBLA with Trials as standard, game updates, dashboard updates, the right level of power easily available to developers and sold to customers for a good price (*cough* RROD *cough*). I love my PS3 and a lot of the games on it, but in terms of system design, hardware design - there are a lot of holes.
I had a Dreamcast and it was a lovely machine. It can't be called the 'greatest' console ever though, simply because it failed - and almost took Sega with it.
@Wulf LOL im watching you my son!
@OG
You are definitely right about the age differences, however i see that i am different from that generalization.
I started on the Atari 2600 at 2yrs old (and i was damn good at it already too.) Quickly moved to NES when i was 3. My next consoles were SNES (bought with my own money from mowing lawns and washing cars) and Sega Genesis (shared with my 3 siblings for a Christmas gift from my parents). I had the Sega CD but passed on the 32x. Then i got PSX a year after launch (also with my own money again). I didnt get a Saturn but i was always at my neighbors playing it. I got the N64 from my cousin as a christmas present for me and my siblings. I bought the Dreamcast a few months after launch from a friend at school. I then had a PS2 which i sold when the Xbox and Gamecube came out because i wanted those 2 consoles. I picked up a PS2 again when the slim came out and sold it a year later for a Nintendo DS and Sony PSP. I then bought a 360 on launch day (waited in line for 28hrs to be the first one to get one in my area). The next year i got the Wii at launch and ihave recently sold that. Then a year after PS3 launched i bought 1 and hardly touched it till MGS4 came out.
Out of all those systems i have owned, i still believe the PS3 has brought the most to the table in terms of functionality. Its more than just a gaming system for me. Its where i get my fix of entertainment (i dont watch TV at all. Last show i watched was season 1 of heroes and before that, the last season of Boy Meets World)
@ DrDamn
Ive owned 3 360s since launch.....To say that it does so much and its only flaw is RROD is weak especially when claiming that PS3s design has "a lot of holes"
Bah...i was going to argue with you but there is no point.
I'll just say I love my 360 and a few of the games on it, but in terms of system design, hardware design - there are a lot of holes.
We all know the worse console ever is the SNES. I hated that system/
I've probably played my 360 more than any other console, and I can say that it's definitely offered me the most intense gaming experinces than my previous consoles.
No other previous gaming experience I've had really comes close to fighting my way around a track at high speed in TDU, hitting apex's and barely staying on the road with the wireless wheel, then finally crossing the line almost out of breath as if it was almost real.
No other previous console game has really gotten my heart pumping and adrenaline flowing like being the last player on my team alive in Gears of war, knowing that the reat of my team is watching me, while I try and take out the whole other team on my own and win the match.
There are loads of examples but my 360 has definitely been a bigger gaming experience than my SNES.
Even so, I'm still saying the SNES, because it was so individual. Whatever I can get on 360, I can probably get the same on PS3 or PC.
That wasn't the case with the SNES.
You do realise this thread will now be hammered by all the fanboys... so on that happy note I'll add my first reaction to reading the first post... How about you go eat a bag of dicks :) That is all :)
Yeah fan boys wont be able to help themselves. I think if your anyway into gaming you would like most, if not all consoles. Everyone of them has pros and cons.
Lets take the PS3, the one i do most of my gaming on.
Pro:free online gaming, excellent exclusives, great graphics, internet, blue ray player etc
Cons: PSN store can be weak at times with content and timing, too expensive (console), overheats a lot (for me anyways) and the blue ray can burn out like a motherfucker
I'm sure the rest of ye can come up with more pros and cons. People just need to be more open minded about gaming and just enjoy it who cares if you like xbox over pc or anything else for that matter games are meant to be enjoyed its about fun and i thnk a lot of people have lost that with gaming
Snes! That is the one time in my life I was an absolute fanboy! When snes died so did my fanboy days. I actually started playing other consoles, my sega that collected dust got played(not much obviously) my ma bought a saturn when it launched that was great but only because didn't have anything. That's when I later got into pc gaming which my unreal tournament days began.
Shortly after that I got a n64 for christmas and that was fun but didn't do much for me. Then I got a psx I loved every moment of that until dreamcast launched. But, I didn't own one and could only play over my friends but it died to soon. Then of course ps2 for birthday, gamecube for nephews and neices(but in my room smh) then xbox when I stayed with my sister.
But when I got my own place I started off with my handhelds. Ds first, it was fun all my friends had it and we were poke'crazy. Then I got my ps2 slim and psp, after my ds fell from the arm of my couch onto carpet and broke -_-. So, shortly after I depended on my friends for the next gen consoles. I grew to loathe 360. So my friend called me when he had a 40gb for 200 to sell me. From there I was sold.
But snes is still in the recesses of my heart as the best of all time
For me it would be 360/
I came in to gaming around the end of PS1 beginning of PS2.
I loved the PS2 and played some great games on it.
Why I pick the 360 is because it opened up the on line for me and games like gears 1 and halo 3 to mention a few just said wow this is next gen.
I have the PS3 now over a year and think it is also very good.
It just never said to me that it was better than 360.
I mean it is just as good in some respects but I find live better.
The little things like not been able to go to the last 30 or so players you met and just join session, or not been able to just sign out a profile without quitting game.
Also some games can take ages to load on to drive without having the option not to do it.
Yes 360 has faults I am sure but overall I reckon MS nailed this gen with there easy acess to the on line thing.
I suppose Sony got caught out a little with MS been so used to computer stuff if you get me.
To conclude I would say I am very glad I own both and I would deffo give Sony no 1 on the hardware end of it.
I mean the PS3 is so quite and smooth compared to 360.
In that respect you can see why Sony are so well respected in the electronics industry.
OFF TOPIC.
Pat I tried to start a thread recently but was unable to post it.
It said form not completed or something but i did not seem to have any options.
Any help would be appreciated. :)
I loved the Dreamcast, but in my opinion every console ultimately comes down to the games they produce. And today possibly the online service as well. I wish it hadn't crushed Segas console division, because clearly they were onto a lot of extremely good things.
In the end nothing beats the PS2 on games though. I still think it's an ugly console with a horrible interface, it always made me cringe a little bit, but it had an overwhelming array of great games.
Still, in terms of fanboyism, I'm stuck on my old Megadrive. And a little bit on the Master System.
I may have had more fun on a SNES, but my parents got me a Megadrive for my birthday, so basically that makes it the most awesome console ever made.
Virtual Boy best console evar!!!!!!
