I came across this article because a friend of mine who LOVE nintendo and HATES sony. Now, this opinion was just not reasonable to me. It was like they hated every feature this handheld is offerring. I think this is beautiful what psp2 is giving. As long as its at a fair price(although I truely don't care). So let me know what you think about this opinion. I think its completely garbage but you may feel different.

By OG's standard, I'm also a Sony fanboy, because I like Sony more as a company than either MS or Nintendo, i personally think Nintendo is overrated, Italian plumbers chasing a princess kidnapped by a giant turtle *yawn*, & I resent Microsoft's greediness, they're like Apple but without the quality, like the RRoD could have been largely prevented with a few extra cents put back into each model & while XBL is more established than PSN, there's no excuse for what they charge to use it.
In the end, i'll support whoever (IMO) makes the best product, I CONSTANTLY use my PS3 as a media device (it's much more accessible than the 360 & i laugh at the wii's media capabilities), also, imo, Sony brings out the best exclusives & the VERY slight downgrade many multiplat games on the PS3 have next to the 360 version isn't worth complaining about unless you're a graphics whore, in which case you're better off building a computer.
The reason I'll get a PSP2 before i consider the 3DS is incredibly simple, the services, media capabilities & HUGE graphics improvements (that opens even more doors [that even the wii couldn't handle]) are much more valuable to me than what the 3DS offers, more Mario(& Zelda & other Nintendo franchises* i couldn't care less about) & a 3D display.
*Pokemon is the only exclusion, loved the cartoon while i was growing up, so i can tolerate the JRPG, but no home console version has been acceptable since the 2nd pokemon stadium.

Making an uberpowerful, ultraexpensive handheld which is basically a shrunk home console is not the right move for PSP2.
The DS won the current round of handhelds with zero effort because it has games on it that are designed for a handheld, not a home console. Nintendo understand that successful gaming on the move requires a combo of innovative hardware and appropriate software, not unnecessarily powerful hardware and the same games you can play at home only now they are really hard to see.
Sony simply refuse to look at the real world and instead plow on with this rediculous notion that somehow if they make the most powerful machine then miraculously the right software will appear on it and they will win.
It's a fail strategy, plain and simple.
Its fail for Sony as they will lose huge amounts of money on yet another botched hardware release.
It's fail for developers because the pixelwhores demanding more textures and more postprocessing and all that shallow showy crap will force the developers to go out of business due to spiralling dev costs and timescales while making piss poor sales.
It's fail for gamers because innovation and solid gameplay will fall by the wayside as devs labour over their all-consuming rendering engines.
Meanwhile Nintendo continues to sell a gazillion units per picosecond, simply because they understand that gaming on the bus, or in your lunchbreak is nothing whatsoever like a session at home in front of a big screen TV.

Which is exactly why the only hook they have for the 3DS is the 3D effect that's also next to pointless on a shaky ride.
Sony obviously understands all of that, ever heard of PSN? yeh, it offers several smaller games you can easily access while on the go, & PS Suite is apparently expanding it so much more, so Sony understands what the casuals want, but they're also keeping the hardcore gamers happy to, Uncharted, Resistance, Killzone, CoD, yes fucking please! & Sony's kind enough to sell it @ a loss just so it's more accessible to us, I'd be surprised if it were to cost anything more than $350 USD.
Also a side note, innovation and solid gameplay are enhanced by technological innovation, without it, we'd still be stuck with pong & snake no one what so ever is forcing them to develop at full capacity, could also use the same argument about 3D, costs more to do but doesn't innovate on anything, just sexier visuals.
Crysis, I think their current attempts at those small titles you've mentioned are more of an answer to the growing smartphone gaming market. it is absolutely possible to have a deep enough, 'hardcore' gameplay but at the same time making it different from the home experience, like has been mentioned before... also most of the first party Nintendo games are very cleverly done, they 're for everyone and can be enjoyed everywhere, which can't be said about neither Angry Birds nor Killzone.
I salute Sony for being brave and striving to create something technologically ground-breaking.
Cashing in on current 'fads' and consumer trends is all well and good.. but fuck, wouldn't the world be a boring place if that's ALL companies ever did?!?
Well, as far i can see, if you're not a child or don't like any Nintendo franchise, there's next to zero reasons to own any recent Nintendo console, this is just my opinion ofc, there's also the few who just like the sporty/party gimmicks on the wii too, but that's not the majority.
People seem to forget that the new PSP is not just a PSP with prettier graphics which is what the article is making it out to be.
1) The new PSP is Sony's first real attempt at branching out its social network portion of PSN. Allowing you to send messages on the go to your PSN friendlist, check out trophies, whos online, play with a buddy etc etc etc
2) What made the ipod touch successful as a gaming handheld...Touch. It has a touch screen with thousands of apps (wasnt always thousands) that support it. This new PSP will sport an OLED multi-touch touch screen and im sure you will see plenty of Apps for it just like the ipod touch. This also helps it compete with Nintendo and share its market of gimmicky childrens games.
3) Not only will it sport a touch screen to help increase its value in gaming but it will be the first handheld to have dual analog sticks. That there is enough to make me want one.
4) An innovative touch pad for the back. Imagine listening to music or watchin a movie and a quick swipe upwards of the right index finger increases the volume. A quick double tap makes a bookmark or turns the repeat on.
5) Of course Graphics. Not just graphics as in WHOAH PS3 quality in your HAND!!!! but also graphics in beautifully render mini games with bright vivid colors and tons of effects with no slow downs or Framrate drops. im talking games like Pixel Junk Shooter, Trine, Boom Boom Rocket etc...
6) camera. If this things supports at least 7mp, its good enough to replace your digital camera.
There is so much more than just PRETTY Graphics....just so many people are already blinded by its graphic capabilities that they fail to see what else is possible with it.
I already sold my 4th gen 32gb ipod touch because i will be using my PSP NGP as my portable multimedia device.
Spider, you mentioned a touch screen like three time in your points. Do you really think something like that is really a big deal for a handheld? And do you think it is apple that they are mimicing or nintendos ds(stylus)?
What I mean is that to me, the makrts of handheld gaming on the go and the iMarkets/cell phones are very different in NA(esp). Handheld gaming is for kids, and a few self indulgent dedicated gamers(hardcore, core gamers). They don't have the same demographic that carries around cell phone.
I mean sure handheld users have cell phones, but one isn't a replacment for the other. I don't see legions of iTouch users jumping to PSP2 or 3DS.
So while it might sound good or make a good prelaunch buzz, I highly doubt that mimicing apples products will greatly increase the psp2 or 3DS appeal to those folks already using iProducts/cell phones.
Asia is a very different market and I expect the launches of PSP2 and 3DS to set their stores on fire with purchases. They will prolly see a drop/dip in console software sales around the each launche as well. But it is different here.
I think here these system have not found or created an identity for themself beyond something most parents buy for their kids. Leading me back to my opening question: How much do you think a touch screen will matter?
And to add to it, I don't think the DS gained sales as a result of their stylus. I say it would have sold trillions with or w/o it.
@SpiderLAW, you're kidding yourself if you expect anything more than a 5 megapixel camera on the back, i suspect that it'll be 3, but knowing Sony it's just as likely to be 5, the front one is likely to have 1, maybe 2 megapixel.
@OG, I wouldn't believe that Sony are copying the touch functionality from the DS, it's the fact PS Suite will be on Android, so the touch feature is a must have for the NGP, it also opens the gates for more casual styled games like Little Deviants, would cool if when you used the screen it made a hole & the other side still makes the hill :P
The DS did use the touch feature as a gimmick, seems to be Nintendo's style, their last attempt at a non-gimmicky console was the oddly 'gimmicky looking' Gamecube, since then, everything from them will have a 'hook' or as serious people call, a gimmick.
On a side note, why does everyone act like the DS was the first portable device to utilize a touch screen? they were around for at least a decade before the DS ;\

Also...yes i believe it is. What makes iphone, ipods, smart phones, and ceven cameras sell so well these days??? touch....simple. Yes it isnt that important, but fuck it, its why phones have jumped to such important levels for people. Touch sells (just like sex)

Why wouldnt it be 7mp? My HTC Hero from 2years back has a 5mp on it. My brothers year old HTC has a 7mp on it. My fathers HTC has a 10mp on it. There are phone out there rocking a 12mp. Its not unheard of.
I've had fairly limited time with the PSP and the DS, but it was pretty obvious to me that beyond pricing, the PSP didn't really hit the casual sweet spot that people expect out of a handheld funbox.
If you look at pretty much anything that sells for handheld devices (not just the DS) it's simple, condensed gameplay design, more than simply twitch action or high speed gameplay.
You can always argue the various features, and obviously Sony are blazing on hardware, especially with this little thing, but really it's the controls that has me interested. Adding touchscreen and analogue sticks could really revolutionize handheld games.
If they can get their heads out of the "portable console" pipedream and into the "handheld fun" reality that people want, they could be out with a monster.
I don't want either, I game at home. When away from home I would honestly rather interact with people than play a game. There's a time and place for everything, Don't you people play enough games at home? I just find it hard to justify spending hundreds of dollars for "gaming on the go" when I have two perfectly good consoles at home (or whatever).

The author of the article is right and knows wtf he's talking about.
Nintendo had always been making their hardware true to gaming and change the way we game. Sony in the other hand just provides what gamers would want in terms of entertainment. Nintendo believes gaming platform is meant for gaming alone while Sony experienced with electronics want to provide gamers more than just a gaming system.
The Wii changed the way we game, Sony & Microsoft now decided to jump in the motion control as well.
Also I completely agree with the author about the big screen gaming!

The proof is in the pudding on this one, 3ds is nothing compared to ngp and will probably have its library remade for ngp in better quality and controls with the lack of 1 thing 3d. But I guess that's a bad move on making a console that can mirror its big brother -_-
The NGP isn't getting any hype on gaming sites I visit. All the chat is about the 3DS.
The NGP seems like a more expensive PSP, and the 3DS will do more than double the sales again.
I think some people put way too much emphasis on the hardware, more so in the case of handhelds.. there's no such thing as better or worse console tbh (aside from the interface preferences and the such), ultimately there's the gaming library which might or might not appeal to someone's taste.

I know the motion gaming began with Dreamcast not PS2. But Wii redefined the way we game and introduced non gamers to gaming. Much like how Uncharted 2 redefines the 3rd person shooter action genre.
Must you come up with such lame excuse about "gamers want nintendogs"? And you do know those games do sell but they are not what gamers are looking for. If you don't understand the concept about what publishers wish to offer gamers and what another wishes to offer for a boarder audience, then don't comment on it.

We are not saying the NGP as a problem, it has no flaw believe me even though the backward compatibility for psp is a flaw. But my whole argument is that 3DS will wipe NGP's ass again in terms of sales. If you want something to sell, you look for something that will get everyone talking about it and something that changes the way we use things!

It's by no LOGIC that if the 3DS releases March and NGP gets released in 1 territory (Japan) dec 2011. The 3DS will still gain more sales because it'll be released worldwide!
World wide release for ngp will begin 2011 leaving Nintendo to have the chance to reduce the price.

The BFI IMAX. Clearly and without question the BEST place to experience 3D. With that said there are very few movies I would actually go out of my way to watch in 3D. Most movies don't benefit at all from the inclusion, and some are made far worse through the director going out of his/her way to make use of it.
Please tell me what game, presented on a 3.5 inch screen and regardless of the system it's on, is going to truly benefit from being in 3D??!?
Factor in the necessity to hold the device dead still at a set distance from yourself and that none of your friends viewing from an angle will be able to see what you're doing.
