So the next NGP or PSP 2, has the ability to Finger Its underside...Um..Who wants to hold a device and finger its underside...Just Let me do all my Touching on the side I can see...That is weird, and I mean Weird!! But who Knows Sony may just be on to something when its comes to fingering the Underside!

Again, its dual touch, so you can "finger" the screen too if you want. You can also use the analog sticks if you want :-P

It sounds ok tbh
Just make sure you haven't got a turtles head hangin' out

not sure what ur problem is, i think this can turn out quite good.

There are several Problems since it won't come with a Stylus:
1. Since The Rear Touch Screen is on the back of the device, it will need to have raised sides to keep you from scratching it when you set it down.
2. Got Sticky Fingers, Covered in Grape Jam..Have a 6 year old that picks boogers all the time, then putting those fingers on that very expensive device.
3. The BIG one is the Weight of the Device. My Wife can't hold the DSi for very long because it gets heavy in her hands, so she sets it down on a lap desk and plays her games. Can't do that with the PSP2..need to keep it up if you want to use the rear touch screen.
Hey as long as every game gives me the option to play it with good old analog controls..Super Great..Just don't force me to play with Touch...And Yes I am getting one, so it is not like I hate it..Just concerned about the rear touch screen, and if they force us to play with the rear touch!

Glad I'm not the only one who thinks this all sounds incredibly dirty.
I like it.

Well let's just hope Sony gives us a choice with the control scheme, i hated using the touchscroon on the DS.
Posted 2 years ago # -
@ Crysis
That is the BIGGIE...if they give us a choice..then a no-brainer for me, but if they don't, it will be a pass for me.
Also I don't want Companies like UbiSoft who are currently making games for the 3DS, bringing over some crappy port, which I am very afraid of!

It's a fantastic idea, can't wait to see what devs do with it.
Posted 2 years ago # -
It sounds bizarre. Need to actually have a go with one before I can decide.

@Blerk
Just think when you walk into a store to play with the Demo unit, you will get to finger the underside of the PSP2 just like Millions who came before! Better wear a Finger Condom, or who knows what kind of itchy, sticky disease you will walk away with...Can you imagine someone who just picked their nose, or someone with Poison Ivy...EWWWwwww

Note to self: buy rubber gloves.
Posted 2 years ago # -
Wondering what the WalMart Emps would think if I walked up to the Demo Unit and pulled out my Surgical Gloves, put them on, and started fingering the back of the PSP or "NGP"..would mothers cover their child's eyes and give me glaring looks...??? LOL

They'd probably say "capacitive touch panel fail"

The human mind is very capable of adapting to a something like this.
Think of it like the trigger buttons on a controller. You can't see them, but you know they're there. Once the mind becomes familiar with something like that, it all comes down to muscle memory.
This is the part of the device that interests me the most.
I refuse to get excited until I see some games though. That's all that matters. The lack of any is worrying. Why would you announce something like this and not even show off either its interface or the games?
Posted 2 years ago # -
@O'Conner
I suspect they want to steal some of the 3DS's thunder. Even if it doesn't hit the states till March 2012, People will now keep all the Stats in the Back of their heads when they go look at the 3DS Demo Units in the stores.
Sony may be worried that the 3DS will get a deeply entrenched and they needed to say something to make people want to wait. Just think if the PSP2 was not coming out for 2 more years, all people would be thinking about this year is the 3DS, but now with the announcement they will keep it in mind. Very smart of Sony to wait till Nintendo was done showing specs of their 3DS and then they say, but Wait and look at the Specs of our New System. Really Sony had to make an announcement this year, and the closer to the 3DS announcement the better!
I also agree that fingering the PSP2's Bottom will become second hand nature. The concern I have is the weight of the thing? If it is too heavy then people will want to set it down and play, and that will render the rear touch pointless. Like I said before, My Wife DSi's almost every day, but it gets to heavy and hurts her wrist, so she bought a Lap Desk and set the DSi on the Lap Desk and just uses the Stylus that way.

The 3DS *is* going to completely slaughter the NGP in worldwide sales. This is pretty much a guarantee at this point. Consumers have proven time and again that they don't give a rats about spec. It's all about brand recognition.
I'll be buying this when it has more than its cost value in games worth playing. Just as I do with every gaming machine that comes out.
As for the weight, it looks fairly small in those videos, so I wouldn't worry.

@O'Connor
I tend to agree with you on sales. Nintendo has Marketing and Brand Recognition down to a science. Sony has yet to get it! I also agree for most Non-Gamers, or Non-Technical Gamers, they don't give a rat's ass. All the 3-16 year olds in my family, will be buying the 3DS based purely on Brand Recognition. There are only a few, maybe 6-7 gamers in my entire family tree, that care about Specs, and one of them is me. So I would say a majority of the Mom, Dad, Tweens, Pre-Teens, and Non-Gamers won't know Crap about the Specs and buy just on Brand Recognition. In Fact I guarantee you that if you were to mention or ask what the Tech Specs were, they would just give you the stare a Deer does in your Head Lights before you make it ground chuck with your car!

Actually it's not as small as it looks. It's actually bigger than the PSP-3000.
Posted 2 years ago # -
In weight Blerk, in weight it doesn't look heavy, quite thin actually.
Posted 2 years ago # -
I guess the other concern is I have big man hands, so say I am holding it with my left hand, and using my right hand to finger it on the rear, Will my left hands fingers be able to stay off the rear touch pad so they don't interfere with it? I will have to handle it. Though as I have said, I really don't want the Rear touch so much on games. The front touch will be nice for navigating and such, but I really don't want it for my games, but that is just me.
Posted 2 years ago # -
Removing the UMD drive will probably help with the weight. The PSP-3000 was hardly 'heavy' to begin with, so I don't think that would be an issue.
The main issue for me would be size, plus the fact that I find the PSP hideously uncomfortable to use. This looks slightly better, but the analogue sticks still look too low down - I'd have preferred it if at least the left analogue had been switched with the d-pad.
Posted 2 years ago # -
@blerk
go play xbox 360 if you want d pad and analogue switched.
the layout is exactly like a dualshock controller.

Okay, I will. :-)

You know I don't think I have ever typed the word "fingering" in any forum, of course I only do Game Forums and Electronic Forums, so I don't know if it is a common word in other forums...

I see the rear-side touch pad as a stroke of genius!
Developers can of course completely ignore it's presence. But I think a lot will find really good, subtle, and potentially completely game-changing uses for it over time.
It would be useful to know whether it can be toggled on or off though. I'm sure there are people out there with salad-fingers who simply lack the dexterity to use more than 2 fingers and thumbs at a time.
Posted 2 years ago # -
I'm in the could be a stroke of genius camp too. There are plenty of touch games on the iPhone which benefit from the touch controls but which don't benefit from having your mitts in the way of the screen. Would likely benefit relative stuff or elements where you would touch, adjust then leave (inventory systems for example) or even stuff like an accelerator in a racing game. It may just feel a bit too weird and disconnected mind :). It may not be an obvious game changer, but put to the right uses it could enhance.
Posted 2 years ago # -
Ok, game-changing might have been a bit of an overstatement. I completely agree though DrDamn. I'm sure that within most game genres we could all think of a really neat way to utilise such a feature - even if it only slightly affects the game as a whole.
I don't know where all the bogeys and jam-finger comments came from! ; \ I'm the kind of guy who pushes the most obscure section of a public toilet door when exiting just so I don't have to touch the door-handle.
If some snotty kid went anywhere near my brand new PSP2 I'd smack the swine with a big stick before breaking out the disinfectant.
I don't share controllers either. Only when I absolutely must.

@Deacon
OMG you touch Public Toilet Doors anywhere??? Are you Crazy!!! Either Use the bottom of your shoes to push the door open, or if you must grab it to open, use a Alcohol Wet One!!
Here is how I do it:
Push open with bottom of foot, or use a Alcohol Wet One, that way my hand never touches the door. Walk in, Use Urinal, NEVER Use stall. Urinate, and if I must use the Sink, Use a Wet One to turn on Water, use Auto Soap Dispenser, Use Paper Towels(Which I hate), and then use Alcohol Wet One to open door, and either throw in trash if near, or it goes on the floor!! Then Open a New Alcohol Wet One, and Re-Wash My hands again outside of Public Toilet.
Do you know that in Public Toilets, since the Urinals and Toilets have no lids to put down, the Urinals and Toilets Spray MISTS of Urine and Fecal Debris ALL OVER the Public Toilet including the Sinks, Paper Towels,Toilet Paper, Doors..EVERYTHING.
It is Better just to bring your own, Like Wet Ones, They come in a Big Box, but can be separated into individual packs that you can carry in your pockets! I keep about 6 or 8 packets in my pockets every time I go out, and keep a Huge Box in the car!! The Wet Ones are Individual Wipes that Have Alcohol in them, Just Tear open, wipe both hands good, and toss!
People who actually use the Paper towels, Soap dispensers, and touch the doors come out with dirtier hands then when they went in!
Oh and the bottom of your Shoes are FILTHY!!!! Make sure you take them off at a safe entry point in the house, and don't walk around spreading Urine to all your Rooms. I go as far, as after a day out, putting on Surgical Gloves and wiping the shoes down...
