I know there's nothing official of the PSP2 yet, but I'm just curious to know what others think now that they know the pricing & details of the 3DS & we have some unconfirmed details about the PSP2.
I personally think the only real selling point on the 3DS is Nintendo's franchises like Mario, Zelda & Pokemon & while the 3D effect maybe cool, but it's a gimmick that won't likely add much to the game.
For arguments sake, let's just assume the PSP2 will cost $299 USD.
Let's leave Xperia Play out of the conversation since it remains to be seen if it'll be the psp1.5 or entirely separate from the PSP with it's own gaming catalgoue.
Now that i have read several 3DS impressions & know the price, it's exactly what i expected, so as long as Sony can deliver, I'll definitely pick up the PSP2 over the 3DS.
Opinions?...
3DS or PSP2?

"I personally think the only real selling point on the 3DS is Nintendo's franchises like Mario, Zelda & Pokemon"
and Sony's selling points? None at best. (Monster Hunter in Japan maybe)
Look at the NPD numbers where PS3 and PSP are last for no reason at all.

C'mon Erth, trying to bring numbers into it =\
There's more factors in sales than simply quality, just because it's better, doesn't mean it'll sell more, let me put it in a way YOU can understand, pc games almost always look better, but their ps360 counterpart almost always sells more.
Price is also major factor & even with a higher price the PS3 has outsold the 360 within the same time frame & the PSP is the 1st successful non-Nintendo portable console, ofc they have things going for it, but the PSP did lack AAA games, but there's still several psp games i would choose over ANY DS game, only game i liked on the DS was Pokemon Platinum(Diamond & Pearl are the exact same with slightly different coding, yet countless ppl buy all 3 versions).
Not being a fanboy here, i just don't find characters like Mario appealing, just want to hear other peoples' preferences. If it makes a difference i also feel nothing for Masterchief & Kratos.Posted 2 years ago # -
In the short term, none for me.
If someone gave me the chance to pick one for free, I'd take PSP2.
If I buy either, it will be a long time from now whne the price is low enough that it doesn't feel like I should be getting a console for the same price.
I would lean PSP2 over 3DS based on if nothing else PSP did more then DS, and its games libary tended to be a tad more mature and a tad more western(tho not much more western). I enjoy the ocasional game on my psp at this point.
No where near worth the price of these new handhelds.
Plus I don't care about the many JP style games that are sure to get reboots on either system. It just isn't for me, I'd rather play angry birds on a cell.

Other than Angry Birds i couldn't agree with you more OG

None of them, because both are going to be overpriced for the next two years (or more lol)

The problem with the DS is that its hardware was really limited. Nintendo seems to do that - build purposefully limited machines that eventually just gather dust. The sad part is though that the DS had better support, across the board. The PSP2 is going to have far superior hardware (and from what I've read it won't be far off from the PS3, visually), but the 3DS will likely have more support despite the hardware being essentially a shitty version of a GameCube.
I'd say that I'm with OlderGamer. I won't bother with either of them. What's looking the most exciting to me at the moment? I'd have to say iDevices. Personally, I say get an iPod, an iPhone, or an iPad. I'm going to be getting an iPad when I can. The reason? UDK. UDK is looking absolutely amazing on it, and it won't be long before we start getting some truly amazing UDK-based games for the iDevices.
Infinity Blade, for example, was fairly mind blowing.
Other than that I'd say to go with a netbook. You can have more gaming funsies on a netbook than you can on either a DS or a PSP, given the PC's back catalogue of rather amazing games. And if you get a powerful netbook then you can even emulate a number of consoles and arcades anyway. So... there's a lot of value there. It isn't portable, but there you go.
Another option is netbook-sized tablets, such as the Asus ones, if you've got the money for it.
But yeah, I think the 3DS is a waste of money, as is. And the PSP2 will likely be a waste of money too, due to a lack of support.

Whichever one is more impressive

The reason for why I never really liked the PSP was because the biggest games for the system were home console-esque titles downscaled for the system. I don't want to play God of War, Resistance or Gran Turismo on a handheld system, I want to play them on my flat screen. Sure, there were exceptions, like Lumines and Patapon and the likes, but the DS was a lot better in that regard.
Then again, seeing how both consoles will be expensive as shit, there'll be a few years before I'll buy either of them.

Thinking PSP2, largely because I think the 3D effect will acutally mean taking a break every half-hour (those Nintendo health warnings will really be hammered home this time) will be really annoying (and I don't want the headaches or eye-strain or have to remain perfectly still)

Toss in something like Onlive(it would fully run on a calculator if you had broadband), and that little netbook would be a damn fine gaming gadget.

Why choose?
Why not both?

i'm going for 3ds!
because it's glassless 3d!people who don't support 3d and say it's a fad, just watch- 2012 when 3D Tv are cheap, everyone would buy a 3ds!
Second, hardcore games are flowing in it! DOA D, SSF4, Ninja Gaiden, Castlevania etc!
psp2? I don't think the psp2 will feature 3D because all games coming out to 3ds are exclusive to 3ds.
No matter how powerful psp2 is, I'm getting 3ds over it!
if I am rich, I'll get both

@OG, No reason we shouldn't expect to see cloud services like Onlive on even smaller devices like Android, iOS or even the PSP2, & if the PSP2 does have an HDMI output, well that would just be gravy, although it'll be using wifi, which is far from great for streaming video content. I think it would be a smart idea for Sony to develop their own cloud service to deliver high end pc-like graphics on their devices.
@O'Connor, As horrible as it sounds, but not everyone has $600 dedicated to portable gaming hardware :'(
@xino, Fair enough, I'm personally not a fan of 3D, if i had the choice of getting a 32" LCD & a 32" 3D LCD for only $50 more, both with the same specs, I'd rather save $50 & get the regular LCD, but in 5-10 years, Internet & 3D will be a built in feature to almost all televisions, kind of how HD has been adapted. I HOPE the PSP2 doesn't feature 3D, longer battery life is more important to me.Posted 2 years ago # -
Almost certainly going to be 'neither' for me. Struggling to care about either.
If someone offered me one for free? I'd take whichever one had the best resale value. :-)
Posted 2 years ago # -
@Blerk, LOL, I'd probably do the same thing then wait for 'em to get cheaper. Make a profit with the same end result :D
Posted 2 years ago # -
You'd be amazed how far a bit of saving can go.
It's not like they're coming out on the same day or anything. We probably won't see the PSP2 until Christmas, if even then.
Posted 2 years ago # -
I'd be more likely to get the 3DS because of the games (If the PSP2 is anything like the PSP then it'll have mostly home console style games ported over, rather than games designed specifically for handhelds)...
...but I wont be getting either for a very long time. My handhelds currently get next to no usage.

So what kind of games do ppl want on handholds? Seems they complain about action/adventure & shooters & love JRPG & platformers...
Posted 2 years ago # -
I don't really care about the type of game as such, but it's got to be the sort of title that can be played for 15-30 minutes at a time without ruining the game. I guess that's why JRPGs and platformers work. Easy to knock out a couple of levels and go back to it later without really spoiling the flow of things.
Posted 2 years ago # -
^^
I bought both Phantasy Star Portable games. So JRPG for me, believe it or not. But if those games had been on consoles I wouldn't have bothered with PSP. Simple as that. I used the hdtv cables, and a small TV in order to play. PS3 versions would have been the best.

@Crysis
"I HOPE the PSP2 doesn't feature 3D, longer battery life is more important to me."that is so naive!
it's like saying you don't want icing in your cake.
It's optional man, when things are optional, you don't have to use it!If the PsP2 does have 3D it will be good because you don't have to use it if you don't want to spend the battery life.
Posted 2 years ago # -
For reference, I also do not want icing on my cake. Nasty stuff.
Posted 2 years ago # -
I can't have icing, I'm lactose intolerant :P
Posted 2 years ago # -
first of all: i never played psp and i barely played the DS. What i have played onj DS left me with boredom after some minutes.
eventualy i will get a psp in order to play the two God of war games and peace walker.Posted 2 years ago # -
I hate icing! No icing on my cake please!
Wait...isn't there a gaming discussion going on?
Battery life is the number one thing for a long-journey-commuter like myself, and the 3DS specs don't look very good in comparison to my current DS-lite. So I shall probs be waiting until either the better battery version is released, or the PSP2 battery specs are released.
Posted 2 years ago # -
Definitely PSP2 anything that's made by Nintendo is always a piece of shit, Nintendo should just die now I hate them.
Posted 2 years ago # -
Nah, we, the consumers, NEED competition...
Posted 2 years ago # -
Exactly.
We also need monster hunter with proper camera controls. That being said they still managed to bork the camera controls on the Wii :(
