   Just to even things up this from same site.

   You all know by now that Sony is kicking it into high gear as the ‘09 season lineup starts out with anxiously awaited Killzone 2. But does Microsoft have what it takes to hang with the big dogs this year?

   So the question lies: Does Microsoft have what it takes to compete with Sony in ‘09? Coming out of a year that was said to be one of the greatest years in gaming history, but each company has passed all that, and each company needs to have a good strategy for ‘09.

   So far from what we have heard, Sony seems to be in a good position right at the start of the year with PlayStation HOME in open beta and getting all warmed up. The blockbuster, and said to be technically the most advanced game to date, Killzone 2. And all of the other announced games to be released this year. What exactly does Microsoft have to compete? We have heard of only a few titles to be released including Grand Theft Auto: Lost and Damned (DLC), Halo Wars, and Ninja Blade, but other than that, will we be seeing a game that blows everyone away and shows how great the 360 is? And what about Alan Wake? These are the games Microsoft NEEDS to compete with Sony this year.

   So can Microsoft compete with Sony in ‘09? Yes they CAN, but we will need to see much more than what we have already heard from them. This is only the beginning of the year and there still is a whole lot more to come. I expect to hear some big announcements from Microsoft in the near future and at E3 ’09, but until then, it looks like Sony just put on their work clothes and MS is chilling in happy hour.

   MS didnt had any real good exlusive titels in 08. So i dont expect anything. They will just try to buy developers to not release their games to the PS3. Last E3 MS conference was already lame because all what they talked about was the movie download serive. If i want to download movies i got to torrent.

   To say MS didnt great exclusives last year is sort of naïve.

   There was Gears 2 :P

   But anyways, right now as it stands from 2009, Sony have the upper hand. Home is getting more lucrative, Killzone 2 out by the end of the month and despite what they are saying, there will most likely be a pricecut by the Spring.

   Where as MS... only have Halo Wars and The Lost & Damned. Although this could change by E3 (or GDC)

   From what I recall Sony ended up with 1 more 80%+ rated exclusive in 08 than MS so I doubt they were too concerned. Not to mention that the 360 sold more even with that being the case. As for 09, no doubt there's going to be a bunch of titles to come, there always are.

   As for needing to compete? I'm not sure they actually do. It would seem that most exclusive games have hardly any effect on hardware sales these days anyway.

   Well that was certainly Sony's strategy going into this gen, if MS adopt the same view, then expect the tables to turn pretty quickly.

   Complacency is the biggest killer in the hardware side of the industry, and gamers will naturally go where the games are. If MS thinks they have Sony on the ropes and it's mission accomplished, then they can forget ever seeing the sorts of sales enjoyed by Wii and PS2.

   I've no doubt that MS have some interesting exclusives left to show us though, they tend to keep their cards closer to their chest than Sony.

   Oh so MS bought exclusive DLC for GTA4 too? LOL MS keeps buying exclusive DLC. If thats all they can do iim sure this will become Sonys year.

   Microsoft did the exact same thing last year - completely neglected to tell anyone what was on the cards for the forthcoming year, leaving forumites to speculate that actually "nothing" was on the cards. Quite why they've decided to do this again, I have no idea. Especially when Sony's so willing to announce something that they thought up on the bog this morning.

   The problem with anouncing things 12 months or more before they're due is that people only usually get upset when they end up getting delayed by another 3-6 months.

   Take Killzone 2 for example.

   If Sony had kept quiet about it until about 6-7 months ago, the hype would have been astronimical.

   But instead, they announced it 4 years ago, with a "taRget renderz" that it could never live up to.

   So because of the almost impossible standards that they set themselves they've had to end up spending £60-70m (or so I heard) on developing a game that will probably never make a single penny's profit.

   (Even though it does look amazing.)

    I wouldn't be too sure that it wont see a profit. If it sells like Gears (all indications are that it will) then it has a good chance.

    No i dont have GTA 4 so why would i care about the DLC? Anyway Microsoft is just trying to get exclusive stuff on multiplatfrom games. How.... creative. They dont have any good exclusive titles announced right now. On the other hand i can think of some great Sony titles like God of War 3 or Uncharted 2.

    Yes Microsoft dont have (m)any big hitting titles announced for this year, but as already stated above neither did they at this point last year.

    To make a comparison to a different market Microsoft seem to be going for the Apple approach, that is rather than announcing titles long in advance and saying they are shooting for the moon only for everyone to be dissapointed by the reality that is behind the hype, they are going for the stratagey of trying to keep their cards close to their chest untill they are pretty much ready to launch, not just announce. Apple have a history of doing this with products such as the iPhone and revisions of the iPod. In my opinion it is a much better strategy and I wish more companies would go for it. Sure its nice to know what the future (1-2+ years away) holds but what really matters is what's coming in the next month or 6!

    I'm just happy that I'm a PS3 owner. =) I love this system, and Sony's been doing a good job. They were awful in 2006 and most of 2007, but they're turning the tides around and making the PS3 alot more appealing and lasting.

    Roybott they didnt had any great titles last year. Only Gears and Fable 2. So 2 exclusive titles this year again? And on E3 they will probably just cheer again about the useless movie download service.

    Halo Wars is alright, and I think GTA IV: Lost and Damned should be a good kicker. I wonder if there is a real game that'll face Killzone 2's graphics and gameplay. Alan Wake is like Uncharted if I'm correct? We'll see how that will face off aganist Uncharted 2.

    Aside from that, Flower & Fat Princess & Heavy Rain ... I think I'm still missing some other nice exclusives for this year but oh well.

    @JesteR GoW2 and Fable 2 were admittedly the only successful exclusives but they were by no means the only exclusives (Banjo, Too Human, Scene it, YITM, to name the first I can think of). Also exclusives aren't the only games on a console so you have to consider the big multiplatform games that were available but may not have been concretely announced at this point last year.

    As for E3 last year was pretty disappointing from all parties so I'm just hoping SOMEONE does something to blow us all away...

    Lips.... yeah creative rip off from Singstar. Dont they have a Buzz clone too?

    @Roybott Multiplatform games dont really help to make a costumer buy your console. Its the exclusives that make the difference. Thats why i didnt talk about multiplatfrom games. But with the exclusive DLC for the 360 i think thats evidence that Microsoft is short of real exclusive titles.

    The 360 does have good games, I just don't see why we're posting threads about PS3 owning 360 and 360 owning PS3 and if the 360 can compete with the PS3.

    My honest opinion, the 360 is not in a very good standing point this year. They're unleashing DLCs and games and whatever else to compete with the PS3 ... but the numbers, threads, and articles and specially the consumers are speaking for themselves. Q1 goes to PS3, so now what about Q2?

    I wonder when will GT5 be released, and no it will not be in 2010 ... it should be this year. That game, alone, will dominate the market. The prologue sold millions already.

    Kind of unfair saying Sony owns Q1 just on Killzone 2.

    Yeah, it should be great but thats more of a hyperbole then a realistic prediction.

    I was thinking the same myself, I mean certainly on sales alone 360 seems to have the edge so far.
    I also don't believe K2 will be a big system mover.
    As for games yes maybe PS3 has the edge Q1 although that is open to debate IMHO.
