Just thought I would get folks thoughts on his influence in music.
I personally thought he was up there with Dylan the Beatles Elvis and more.
He really did influence a lot of today's stars IMHO.

Unlike anyone else, in my lifetime at least. A phenomenon.
He really is an icon of modern life, an enduring figure that has been relevant for the past 40 years. Not always for the right reasons.
I mean, if anything his 'look' is what was so iconic about him. He really wasn't a normal celebrity.
And not only that but passing in this technical age, is amazing. I suppose with dwindling physical music sales and him being the artist of the best selling album ever, his life kind of bookends this era of physical music distribution, a amrket he (until he died) had not even tried to enter.

I would concur with you although he had a hard time in my opinion.
I still wonder was he just a big child behind everything still looking for the youth he never had?
i agree with reask and shatner, but 50 years is still kinda early to go. i would have guessed he would have seen 80 at least

And let's get a little perspective here. A tragedy for his family and friends, and sad we will not hear any new music from a great artist, but people grieving for someone they never knew (preferably a celebrity) is the new "opiate of the masses" and makes me worry about the state of modern society and culture. cf. the mass hysteria which accompanied the death of Princess Diana. Ugly and unbecoming.

But with a caveat: that the state of modern culture is such that some celebrities do become a huge part of some peoples lives. I have to admit to feeling very sad when Colin McRae died and also John Peel. I think sometimes when you get older it's less about grieving for the person themselves and more about mourning the loss of all your childhood heroes. I know I personally dont have many left alive. I think that that is closer to what is going on here.
Even though he wasn't to me, MJ was a hero to many folk so I dont find the public reaction distasteful at all. The media coverage that I've seen I've found to be extremely hypocritical though... given the kind of coverage he got over the years.
The Diana thing to me was something different and yes, I agree, ugly and unbecoming. I remember distinctly feeling as though smiling in public was considered a crime for weeks. Seemed to me there was an attempt to whip up something similar when Jade whatsherface died too... that's where it gets ridiculous imo. Death as media orchestrated event.
edit: re his influence...
undoubtedly huge but imo more so in the arena of the music video than anywhere else. He changed music television forever but I don't really see his influence in the other music I listen to at all. Whereas Dylan is in everything ;)
I don't think it is anything new as it happened with Elvis and others through the ages.
I would agree with bravearses first part about the childhood thing.
