I understand the need for a Captcha system on VG247, hopefully it will cull the spam, but is it a permanent or temporary solution?
Having to type two, rather complicated, words in each time I wish to comment is an incredible hassle. I don't know any other site that employ this method on a per comment basis, yet they seem to deal with spam fine.
What gives?
I have to agree - it's horrible. I think it's far more likely to kill interest than the spam, even.
I usually read with the images switched off too ('cos I'm at work and that), and it's now impossible to post in that mode because I can't see the words to type. :-(
Shouldn't the Captcha thing be just used for signing up for an account rather than for every post?
We had a major tech issue on Saturday night. The entire version of the site we were running live was erased. To cut a long story short, we're running a version of the site that wasn't actually supposed to go live. Captcha was installed on this box as a test, but was never supposed to be implemented across the comments threads. It'll be removed as soon as we can work out how to do it without breaking everything.
Are you being asked to fill in Captcha boxes on the comments threads on the news stories, or just in the forum?
Just on the comments threads - it's not asking for them in the forum! :-D
On the plus side, IP address reporting now seems to be working for me in the forum. Previously I was seeing 127.0.0.1 for everyone. :-)

The spammers seem to have given up today, too - I've only deleted one so far. Unless someone else is doing them all? :-D

I think you need to mod some peeps in the Aussie time zone, when I'm up late there's always quite a bit of spam.

LOL...Last Night I just stayed on all night deleting everything that kept coming up, deleted around 30 Spams, maybe a little more. They got tired of putting it up and it only being there for a few minutes, after that it really slowed down.
Maybe they see the forum has Mods and will give up..One can hope!
Not sure if Akismet works with bbPress, but it would definitely solve the spam problems on the blog.
