I feel I am about to lose my mind!
Okay...
I am now using my own domain for my gaming blog, I managed to set up the domain on WordPress just fine, no problem. But now, my problem lies with setting up the emails!
I am on WebFaction as my hosts and I am trying to set up my emails for Google Apps but it need verification. I have tried doing this but it keeps coming back with errors!
HELP!
So, going by your website you've got an email account called
"jonathancullen@goonlinegames.net"
I trust you have set up whatever email readers (Outlook/Thunderbird/etc) you use to send and receive email from this address?
Assuming you have a functioning email address at the domain, can you elaborate on the verification errors you're receiving?
Oh, for what it's worth, I would recommend having a 'spare' email address on a service other than your webhost if you don't already. If something happens to your host or if your account gets fubar'd then your associated email accounts are likely to get caught in the crossfire. Having an independent email account like a Google or Hotmail account can be a lifesaver. Especially as they can be accessed from any online computer rather than just the one you have your email program running on.
PS: Your "chnage is good" tag looks a little less professional than your promise of a press release would suggest.
PPS: the link behind the display of your email address in that post is an http link (hover over it and observe the email address displayed in the status bar of your browser) you need to use a "mailto" style link for email addresses.
What exactly are the errors?
Personally, I have Gmail set up so that it simply displays my outgoing website email address when I send emails from Gmail, instead of my Gmail address. I also have the website email set-up to simply forward those emails to my Gmail.
As far as everyone's concerned, they're emailing my work email, but I'm doing it all from Gmail. *laughs*
I find its an easier solution than setting up all that email jargon, which I couldn't get working either despite being certain the details were right.
Set up your email address in your hosting's control panel. Get Thunderbird (or whatever). Add an account. The username will probably be the email address itself, and the mail server will most likely be "mail.whateveryoururlis.com". Put that in for both incoming and outgoing. If it doesn't work, you may need to change the outgoing mail server to your ISP's SMTP. If you really can't figure it out, five minutes on the phone to your hosting's support should fix it.
Alright, to use Google Apps, I have to verify that I own the domain so I choose to verify by CName on Google. It gives me a unique string to use so I then go to DNS Overides on WF.
I have to create a new CName record for the domain by using the string given to me and then forward it to Google. Now, the options given to me are Subdomain (obv), A ip, CName, MxName and MxPriorty. There are two others but those are optional so I'll leave them out.
Anyways, I put in the string given to me by Google into the CName and google.com into the MX name, as told to me by a friend who runs another gaming website who hosts off WF.
But when I process it, the CName comes up (the part where I entered the unique string given to me by Google to set up Apps and verify I own the domain) saying:
Value must be a valid domain name
CNAME records can only apply to subdomains (not main domains)
Okay, I think I have it now.
Google says this may take 48 hours to verify though.
I recall this validation thingamy.
I went with the option of uploading an HTML file which worked like a charm.
Give that a go.
