Microsoft has officially confirmed this through Twitter. Here is more about it and the source http://www.noshitshurlock.com/getting-banned-on-xbox-live-will-block-access-to-games/
Getting banned on Xbox Live will remove access to you're games(42 posts)
Well it makes sense but at the same time it doesn't.
That's very worrying, especially linked to their new:
People getting banned for the wrong reasons and having a nightmare trying to get back access to your stuff.
A long term problem I have with a digital society, is the fact that people can turn off your 'rights' to certain products based on potentially a silly decision you have made in your life.
Similar to a credit check for people who have had financial troubles, it's very easy to cut people off if everything is digital.
It's the opposite of rehabilitation IMO and treats everyone as potential criminals...
@MG, As you're moving to the PC and I assume Steam, this is something you're going to have to get use to I'm afraid. As far as I know if you get banned on Steam you lose your access to games but I think that's only in the case of breaking the service agreement. If cheating I think you can still play offline and single play games.
For some reason, I'm already more comfortable with STEAM. I think it's because most devs and people using it only have good things to say about it. Even though its restrictive, it feels like it was created with games as a main feature, obviously this may change over time.
MS has really fucked me off as I've stuck with them all through their lame E3's the last couple of years. The Xbone has truely shown the colour of their money IMO and I don't really want anything to do with it.
It has really become the worst thing I've seen in a while, there is nothing I like about its direction.
@MG, You do have to remember though, and this is what Brenna's article was getting at, Steam/PC has had years with a nearly all digital platform to perfect the services.
Consoles know they need to be more like that and this is MS's attempt at making their own "Steambox". I mean look at retail today, PC game shelf space is practically non-existent compared to consoles and yet that platform is thriving and supposedly more people are playing on PCs than ever.
People talk about the imminent "Steambox" and really, that will probably be a lot like the X1, although I have no doubt it will be more consumer friendly from the get-go knowing Valve.
I just think it's way to early to say this is going to be a disaster.
Actually viral I'm going to heartily disagree with console makers trying to ape pc gaming.
Its this thinking thats raising costs and making gaming a "luxury" instead of a easily accessible & affordable entertainment alternative.
Idiots like Cliffy B bang on about "our" need for new graphics, when in gact its devs who are constantly banging on about how good their new game looks... Just a shame the gameplay hasn't changed.
Okay, my other worries still stand though! :)
I can't believe how easily people offer up little bits of their freedom these days without even thinking about it for a second.

So how does the Wii U fit into that theory?
Even if this speculation is total bullsh*t and just a bad PR misunderstanding the fact that MS lets all this chit-chat float around is equally alarming.
What I can tell, at least it's easier for me to see what console I'll be buying.
*whispers* To give you a hint, it's 100€ cheaper! :P *whisper*
When was Nintendo going around bragging for graphics and the likes?
Also, Wii U can get away with a lot based on it being roughly half the price of the 'next gen' consoles while still having enough 'grunt' to put games like X out.
The price to power ratio seems fair.
Basically, cheaper than the Wii was at launch.
£149 is actually UNDER half the price, by the time next gen is out for a while, I wouldn't be surprised to see a basic model go for £99 in some places. It's going to take a long time for Ms to drop the £429.
Nintendo's main position seems to be 'complementing' which ever console was performing best. Last gen it was 360 + Wii for alot of people. Maybe it'll be PS4 + Wii U for alot of people I the next gen?
Basically, they are like one of those parasitic 'sucker' fish that hang onto the bottom of a shark...
Sure, Steam does that too but I pay 2-10 bucks for my Steam games, not 60 bucks for a PHYSICAL copy of the next military shooter.
It's illegal (at least in the EU) to deny you access to things you own, digital content included. And yes, that goes for Steam as well. Which is why you can, in fact, still play your games on the service if you're banned.
That won't stop Microsoft from trying to enforce it, but hey, that's what the high court is for.
Just another reason to stay away from the X1.
That was my point. zinc was implying that as gamers, we don't care about the 'graphics arms race', but I disagree.
The Wii U didn't focus on visuals, and look how well it sold. It has an innovative new controller, so we can't accuse it of having the same old gameplay, either.
You could argue that it's only selling poorly because of the lack of games, but maybe it would have more games if it had more power.
If Nintendo was offering X1/PS4 hardware, a year ahead of those consoles, maybe we'd be looking at MS and Sony desperately struggling to catch up in November.
@GIGA, The WiiU that isn't considered next-gen because it lacks graphical power... like the Wii before it?
Though the WiiU certainly has some very nice features & could have some very nice games... But they won't all be nice & shiny.
Theirs a price-ceiling for console gaming & we've been hitting it hard this gen. The industry is pricing itself out of the casual gamers reach, simple as that.
@Froseidon, it shouldn't matter if its digital or physical.
How are you supposed to do an online check if you're banned from accessing the service though? Genuine question.
I'm not saying gamers don't care about graphics GIGA, how could we not? Its drummed into us time & again that the *new* graphics engine is whats driving games forward...
Maybe we should have been asking for new game mechanics?
Either way *next* gen is about choosing between to user friendly pc's in different boxes & thats not what console gaming was about.
@Ireland - Your hate and comments against MS is getting to the ps3fanboy levels. Seriously, tone it down a bit. I bet Sony has similar policies regarding digital content.
@Froseidon, How about not telling me what opinions I am and am not allowed to have? Thanks. This is a *discussion* forum. I'm discussing the subject, and not resorting to ad hominem attacks either.
It wouldn't matter to me what company was doing this. I wouldn't support it, Sony included. This has absolutely nothing to do with platform bias (I've never had any), and everything to do with how I think consumers should be treated.
I was simply pointing out that denying someone access to their digital content is straight up illegal in my corner of the world. How that equates to "ps3fanboy levels" of fanboyism is beyond me. Don't insult my intelligence, please.
@Ireland - I never told you what opinions you could have, I was merely suggesting forming them in a less aggressive manner. Every time I have spoken to you or seen one of your comments, it seems to have been formed incredibly bluntly.
I never insulted you intelligence (at least not intentionally, and if you took offence, I apologize), but it just seems you never talk about anything else except Xbox One's shortcomings (granted, I could have worded it better)...
Also, when you quote something, please do it correctly.
What's your 'intelligence place'? Is it a special room in your house? :D
*Your games. Sorry but I had to...
People please lets not turn into http://badbreeders.net/wp-content/images/Grammar_Nazis____The_Motivator_by_ZlayaHozyayka.jpg
@Froseidon, I feel no need to pussy-foot around a company determined to treat *me*, one of their customers, like shit.
I talk about the X1's shortcomings a lot because right now that's what 90% of the news is about. I have been all over how great Project Spark looks, but the way the hardware is set up right now leaves it with absolutely no redeeming qualities whatsoever.
You compared my level of opinions to ps3fanboy. That's pretty terrible. =P
@MK Shush you. Hahaha. Typo.
@Ireland - Ah true, I guess I'm just tired of the same record. Its everywhere that its annoying me.
And I only meant it as I have not seen you talk about anything else. Trust me, no one is as bad as ps3fanboy. Well, some might be, but they ain't in this thread :L
He who shall not be named!
I really don't know how all this misinformation can exist:
Major Nelson clearly shows that he's surprised when the lady shows she's happy that she CAN still play games even if she's banned, whether if she's at fault or not. Long story short...You CAN access and play all your games, even if banned. Nelson says it would be ridiculous if it wasn't possible.Posted 5 months ago #
