Seems like the PS3 has finally been hacked. You'll find a ton of information relating to the thing in this thread: http://neogaf.net/forum/showthread.php?t=404565 (OP really needs updating, but scan through some of the pages and you'll see the info unfold).

Short version: USB stick turns PS3 into debug unit. Allows homebrew and installation of games onto a HDD (basically enabling piracy).

Pretty damn impressive to have held out for this long... and I guess I shouldn't be surprised that the nutters worked out a way after Sony decided to remove Linux from the console. Remains to be seen how Sony will combat this, but I'm expecting it to end up in a similar situation to the piracy on the 360... you basically don't go online. I'd also expect some of the upcoming games to have mandatory firmware updates (with security improvements to stop the hack).

It appears that you need at least one retail game to stay in the drive (not sure if this has to be something in particular), beyond that you can rip any other games to your HDD and play from there.

Yup saw this earlier. SONY is in trouble :D I would have said something earlier Steph but out of respect for you and the site I didn't want to condone illegal actions know what I'm saying.

Of course Psychotext who be the one to start this thread....of course (the guys so against piracy....(when it only concerns M$)

It's back in the mists of time, but you'll find I was one of the first people talking about the initial 360 hacks too (the proper ones, not the bullshit DVD firmware rubbish). Trust you to find some sort of conspiracy angle though. Bless.

You did get one thing right... I'm massively anti piracy. No excuse for cunts stealing from developers. Homebrew is another story though, I love it, mostly because it brought us the best media player ever (XBMC).

One thing I will say.
Having watched 1 of the vids I noticed the guy put in gow3 and then loaded up infamous.
I have infamous on my hd having bought it on plus so I am wondering could this maybe fake?

Sad times. Hope Sony can patch this up quickly and definitively, otherwise it's going to be firmware hell for the duration of PS3's life. Fucking hate pirates. :(

Some more info from demonhades.org:

This mod is basically a RETAIL TO DEBUG convertor, using a JIGCARD from SONY services.
If you look at VHS, it has some DEBUG things.
This JIG CARD(aka USB DONGLE) is used for devs and technicians from sony to launch BOOT INI from DEV_USB0.
Combining some buttons you can change the SYSCON status, who launch as a primary boot this dongle.

BOOTSTRAP is read and the files from dongle are launched and the RAM is making a false REBOOT.
The whole thing its an SYSCON FIRMWARE EMULATOR.
TRM "thinks" we have a debug unit and KERNEL DEBUG is loaded.

This way a DEBUG VSHMAIN (temporarily) allows unsigned code load.
Now you can launch PKGs from USB (that has an explorer to do that)

To launch BDEMU you need a disc to activate MEDIATYPE BD.
When you launch LOADER(from usb) BDDRIVE CHANNEL is closed(they cant share the same channel).
To eliminate LAYER, it needs a CELLFTP to extract decrypted files(no layer) and to convert those to DEBUG MODE.
Executer files can be created with SDK,and generated by the same loader that extract the LAYER, and using PS3GEN to create signed isos(patched).
Same way a 360 works(using a core debug)

The LOADER is executed via APP.
ELIMINATING the initial USB BOOT, its all SONY has to do to kill this mod, because SYSCON is the boss

Sounds like they've got a good chance of nipping it in the bud, provided they can force the firmware before the usb hack kicks in.

That's only really going to help if people allow their PS3s to update. The firmware updating routines all run a long time after the bootloader (and are called from inside the standard firmware, meaning that there's potential for this hack, if modified appropriately, to block them anyway).

That will all come in time though. In the mean time I'm fully expecting them to get a firmware out there ASAP to get everyone to update to a non compatible version before most people have even heard of the product.

Yeah, it's got to be damage control at this point.

Who knows what the full capabilities of this hack are at this point though. It's important to remember that the base PS3 security remains intact, this is just a work around so a custom firmware might not be so straightforward. Sony could also alter future software so that the game software itself is modified not to run from USB.

It's deeply disappointing though. After all the failed attempts to attack the system, it finally gets tripped up by some toilet bug selling them out. They certainly should have better secured this side of things, but still, it's really disappointing that it's finally happened.

At least though, it has happened at a point where Sony aren't selling the hardware at a loss and it seems anybody selling this hack is on very shaky legal ground. I just hope it doesn't damage software sales too much. Sony have invested a fortune in their first party studios, and they put out a lot of high quality big budget titles, I'd like to see that investment rewarded.

Frankly, it's bizarre that they put a backdoor into their system in the first place. You don't spend millions developing a bank vault and then let people take the code home on a post it note. ;)

What a joke, and what you gonna do when Sony updates the PS3 Firmware? You would have to be a moron to pay $100+ for this. I would recommend waiting till sony does an update and then see what happens.

Only ozmods doing that at the moment. So far there's been no lawsuits against the clone manufacturers (who I believe are shipping them as of next week).

Do you guys think it will ever be possible to play wii games on a jailbreak PS3 and us PS MOVE with those games. Are there any hackers and modders out there that can do this or is up to the challenge to pull this off?

I received the original PS Jaiblreak ordered from http://www.gadget-asia.com. It works very well with my PS3, whose firmware stays as 3.41. I have backed up several favorite games to the HDD. We also received emails from them saying the producers had been working to upgrade the mod chip. It seems to be compatible with 3.42 and 3.5, but I'm worried to try it, so I keep the firmware as 3.41". Hope it will be upgraded soon.
