"Xbox One... You see ONE look at it and buy a PS4" - joke
After having a night for everything to sink in and mull things over, I thought I would share where I feel MS fucked up royally.
1. The box / hardware:
Although specs haven't been fully revealed, I fear the reason they are sidestepping that issue becuse it's basically a PS4 inside. Maybe even worse if the PS4 has better ram and less memory is taken up on the OS.
I feel that at one point, MS had 2 SKU's... One really powerful, and one 'set top' box... This product looks to be a mash up of those 2 visions. So, TWO becomes ONE... Queue The 'Spice Girls'!
The problem with this, is that your going to never really please either crowd that much. Maybe too expensive for the TV crowd, and not powerful enough for the gamers compared to a rival.
I still think they would be better off going for one box that was very powerful (for gamers) but had a subsidised monthly payement system (for the cable box crowd). People who are into TV and cable are already used to subscriptions model, I feel that could have helped make everyone happy.
2. Focus on TV...
This was a huuuuuuuge mistake IMO. It's become an instant joke. We all knew it was going this way, but it's like the last few E3 presentations made 10 times worse and magnified...
The showreel highlights says it all; PS4 was: games games games...
MS: TV, TV, TV, TV.....
I have zero interest in that side of it. I don't even watch TV, and if I did, these features are never available to me as im UK based... WASTE OF TIME...
I have about 5 close friends who own 360. This focus on Kinect and TV has instantly made them skip this console, Im sure many of us are feeling the same.
Also, as Peter Molyneux said, this now splits MS's quality control, not only making games but TV shows too... There is a huge chance you can drag your brand down with a shitty TV show, Halo being an example... Over saturation of the IP and a huge potential it will suck as it's so 'forced' onto the new hardware.
3. The games...
Or lack of them. Not really much to explain here, obviously E3 is round the corner and we will see more, but, Forza just doesn't cut it anymore as a reveal.
Likewise for the shitty EA stuff and COD. There nt even exclusives?! Epic facepalm there. I didn't care for the PS4 stuff they showed but at least it made me feel like they built the console alongside dev's for, you know... Making games!
Anyway, rant over. If the Xbox ONE can come in at £249 - £299 max then maybe were okay... Maybe MS can offer a really low price due to all the new advertising revenue it will be claiming... This would force Sony's hand a bit.
Anything over £349 and I think it will really struggle.
