@Dragon246 it hasn't been downsized at all, it was just, should we say, out of focus, since this Gen was the one with the most powerful competitors (360 and Wii, both had their cons and pros, also did the PS3, yet they are the greatest CONSOLES ever made)

The future is living room/bedroom PC and digital sales, Steam has proven to be much more rewarding, giving discounts, accessible price even without the said discounts, enhanced social interactions and modding. Although Portable gaming seems to be the highest point, as both Sony and Nintendo made great profits with their PSPortable and DS on the past (not in short time periods but in the long life of their machines).

Overall PS enhancements that should be made: a computer, not just a console, something rewarding fully open for gamers find the best way to play their games. The new born Vita, the powerful machine with such great potential, should be their main focus now or else the company will lose their second gold mine not yet touched...

Massive failure, similarly to Posv performance.

Lots of adverts, usual trademark Sony lies and overpromising, with massive underdelivering.

And, of course passionate, decadent, long winded essays from kids/unemployed/office employees with inferior salary.

@Erth,
They will probably price it at 400 or less (if they are sane), not 1000$. I am sure it will be more powerful (also 720) than any pc config at that rate, as has been the case in each console generation.
I am actually happy that no one is breaking the bank to include the latest and greatest hardware on consoles.

@TEA,
When are you going to pick me apart? :P

@Reask,
Console market as a whole is bigger than ever now. Although I wont be an early adopter because of a massive backlog, I understand people like to buy new things.

If you want my take on it I reckon next gen is going to be a hard grind for both ms and sony.
Why?

Simple really when you think about it.
People have moved on and are getting older so if the new kids aint buying in you are basically flucked.
Sure us older heads may long for next gen winners but are we really that bothered or not?

Fact is we are older and probably wiser with different prespectives on life so unlikely to buy in to the next gen with as much enthusiasim.

I personally reckon the PS360 gen was the last great white hope and it is quite possibly over as far as console wars are concernerd.

The best of luck to both but I am personally pessimistic as to the future growth.

@Erth

I suppose it did save its bacon really.

Even with Bluray to boost sales of people wanting a player and free online and exclusives, it still didn't kill the competition?

I think Sony have crazy over spent and PS4 will be very off the shelf for its parts.

I think the 720 will use more more custom and tweaked set up.

"IMO Bluray was a huge mistake for PS3. It added nothing to gameplay and all it was for was to try and win a media war which cost Sony a lot of money and almost became null and void half way through the PS3's lifespan with the boom in digital downloads / Netflix etc..."

Bollocks. Blu-Ray saved it's ass actually. But for the gameplay-wise, yeah. Blu-Ray is a piece of shit. It doesn't add anything even to the graphics.

To this day all PC's still play PC games digitally or by DvD and all games look like next gen compared to any PS3 game with Blu-Ray.

P.S. About 20 Feb. I'm not sure that we will see console at all. Maybe it's prototype with a working controller. Probably we will see what it is capable off.

But so far, if System specs that were for PS4 are true, they are not impressive. 8 core AMD Bulldozer with 1.6 GhZ. That is the greatest POS on earth and it's cheap as hell. Intel's i3 processor's that are cheap have better clock speed, not to mention i5 or mighty i7.

Next year we will see Hasswell processors from Intel which are 22 NM - 14 NM and they are going to have power of a full console.

We know a lot now. Hardware leaks are almost always right now. and some other hints are showing up too.
Plus, this is a part fact part speculation/prediction thread, waiting to see what everyone thinks right now. Nothing is stopping you to speculate on 20th Feb.

And people, Microsoft is already panic mode, here is the ABSOLUTE PROOF.

As of yet, I think it's too early to say if Sony has learnt anything from the Vita and PS3.

I just don't see a huge change in their attitude based on recent business trends.

I think some of these changes are born out of necissity rather than realising some of their previous mistakes.

IMO Bluray was a huge mistake for PS3. It added nothing to gameplay and all it was for was to try and win a media war which cost Sony a lot of money and almost became null and void half way through the PS3's lifespan with the boom in digital downloads / Netflix etc...

More system memory or a better graphics card would have been much more benificial than the 2 speed bluray drive and should they have gone that route, they may have completly buried MS from a power perspective.

A problem I found with PS3, is it promised so much from a power perspective on it's launch, and completly failed to deliver on this aspect.

Many 360 3rd party games look better and even the best PS3 exclusives don't look good enough to make me go for it over a 360. It will always be a machine I use for exclusives.

From the specualtion, the PS4 sounds a little better. Although the only reason I don't think Sony will focus on 4k, is that they know the solid media days are coming to an end. 4K TV's are just too expensive, plus they also got burnt with all that 3D bullshit which no one bought into.

Thing is, I feel they bet on the wrong horse at the wrong time. While they were preoccupied with getting Bluray into your home, MS was slowly building a huge and solid online infrastructure which will be brought out in full force with the 720.

This idea of; courting the 'Old Skool Core Gamer' is so mistimed now and pointless.

As much as we all like those kind of games, the days a company can purely survive like that are long gone. I hope Sony are prepared to offer a full media package and that it's well thought out because thats what MS will do.

If MS can increase it's stranggle hold over media distribution in the US, I think Sony are pretty much fucked.

MS are going to focus on live streamed sporting events with Smartglass and Kinect / Skype interaction. As much as that sounds shitty to a lot of people, thats what consoles are turning into. In that respect I think /ms has got it locked down.

Sony are going to have to come out with some amazing changes to their network to offer something near to what MS probably have planned.

As for pad rumours, sounds cool but ultimatly features that have been used elsewhere (Onlive, Wii U).

Bigfest, again could be okay, but without a proper touchpad keyboard on the pad, online chat and updates could be a pain in the arse. If they add a proper touchpad, people will just mention the Wii U.

One area Sony are doing well with though is testing the waters with MMO's on PS3. We had MAG & Dust 514. Not my cup of tea, but these type of games are going to be huge with the next gen I think.

Rough predictions:

Feb 20th show showcases Dual Shock 4. I think they will mainly show the new redesign of the Dualshock at the show, to get people comfortable with the change.

New features will be shown, touchpad, Vita link up, game recording etc... Along with new PSN, Bigfest or whatever.

As bandwidth for games increases and cloud storage becomes more important, I think Sony will roll out PS Plus across the board. I.E. No subscription, no gaming online.

I just don't think they'll be able to provide a quality service without shitloads of adverts or some kind of mandatory membership. I think they'll still offer loads of good value freebies though.

Then maybe a demo reel, Uncharted 4? Team ico? Motorstorm?

Who knows, but overall, I think Sony are in for a tough ride.

let me post what i've said elsewhere already, because this still is what i think about all this and i don't have time atm:

"i think the ps3 still has enough steam for 2 more years. the 360 for 1 max. i think in these financial crisis times they will wait as long as they can. vita isn’t out long, they just redesigned the ps3. maybe they just add a new touchpad controller, something vita to the ps3? new stuff to expand the life of the ps 3 for two more years? to counter wiiu and nextbox smartglas. something like this: “hey, you can just get our cheaper add on and you can have the same experience with less costs. the ps 3 still is a powerhouse, see, here you have the last of us, a game that looks better than any other game on any other system yet plus these great games, designed with the new *whatever it will be* in mind *then announce some games for that thing just like kinect, move stuff etc.” you know, something like that. counter, no need to release new hardware (in the form of a brandnew console) yet. that would be pretty clever actually. my prediction: this holiday nextbox, holiday 2014 ps4 – earliest spring or mid 2014…
as a multiplat gamer that’s ok. i wouldn’t want to buy a ps4 this year. to me it still feels fresh enough and there are great games for it in the pipeline.
so i think it’ll be something wiiu, smart glassish and something vita/ps 3 combined…could also be a new console sure, could be anything. i just think it would make sense. i mean vita and ps3 are still super for great looking games. combine them, maybe make a new ui, a new social online feature ‘big fest’ and sell the shit out of the hardware you already have. you can counter wiiu graphically and i believe nextbox too for two more years and then release the superduperultrapower ps4 in 2 years and be first with the most powerful console ever…"

I don't think we're gonna see a price or specs or even gameplay. I think we'll see the "case". Maybe the new controller. And some teasers/ tech demos. I think they will indeed tell us what's coming from there devs i.e. SuckerPunch, Naughty Dog, Guerilla, Media Molecule, Evolution, and possibly (fingers crossed) Polyphony Digital. They'll talk about capabilities. System and controller wise, apps, Gaiki and the like. And they'll talk about it being future proof. I'll be shocked if they show any actual games. I think that'll come at E3. With a launch date and a price tag also. I really believe Sony wants to see how much MS wants for the 720 first. Thems my predictions.

PS brand has been downsized this gen due to the fact that Sony committed the cardinal sin of letting tech taking precedence over pricing. However I believe they were able to gain back a lot of the disgruntled customers by correcting their mistakes quickly and introducing amazing services like ps plus.
However early years of ps3 still represents a low for PS brand from which IMO the brand is still recovering from.
Its in this climate that Sony is releasing the next PlayStation. And frankly, it seems that they have taken the lessons to heart here....

Now history class over, now my opinion on ps4 -
PS4 (or whatever its called) is shaping up (according to leaks)to be amalgam of everything Sony learnt from past 3 gens. It focuses on gaming only and other applications rightly featured as add-ons.
Mind you, even RAM situation isn't that bad. According to rumors, ms is allocating 3gb out of 8 for OS, whereas ps4 only saves .5gb for it. So for games, 720 will have 5 GB ddr3 whereas ps4 will have 3.5 of gddr5. So each system will have its own advantages.

Now, ps4 announcement is eminent on 20th Feb. Heres what I think will be announced at that-
1. System itself (almost final form)
2. Few blockbuster games
3. Maybe Bigfest
4. The controller (thankfully with no 2nd screen)
Sony has already taken the correct step IMO to only focus on hardware and not add-ons that no one asked for. Now the only missing piece of the puzzle is pricing. If ps4 is priced that the same price as that of 720, then it could do very very well indeed, as ps3 will still manage to outsell 360 even though it was priced substantially higher throughout this gen Even though MS can significantly undercut Sony if they want to, they wont IMO as like apple, they now want profits on everything.

I don't factor in ninty here because they are following their own path and I don't see them hurting sales of 720 and ps4. Although it may happen if Sony and ms commit the fallacy of projecting wiiu as competitor to ps4 and 720 and not current gen. Even big 3rd party pubs like EA think that next-gen hasn't started yet,even though technically wiiu is next-gen.

At the end, everything depends on pricing, as that's the biggest reason why ps3 had a lackluster start, and that's the only thing that

So whats your opinion? Do you see Ps4 as the culmination of the redemption that started after the low of ps3 launch, or do you think it will fall by the wayside. Last but not the least, what do you expect from 20th Feb and what are you most excited about ps4. Please post measured responses.
