Even when graphics reach a point where they can depict humans that are indistinguishable from real (and I don't think that's going to happen next gen) they are never going to release games that depict 100% real looking violence because:
A) it would never make it past the ratings boards.
B) people would be throwing up on their controllers.

never ever was a fan of very realistic looking videogames...seriously. i like stylized graphics and artdesign. it´s a freaking game and not a movie. it isn´t real life either.

Yeah, the first dying guy I ever saw was not "cool" in the least. It was sad and pathetic and a little scary. Guy on a bike hit by a bus when I was about 13. I'll never forget his pants must have gotten caught on the bike somewhere, because they were totally ripped open, and he was hanging out of his pants and it was a bluish-purplish color. People were trying to help him, but the way his head was turned. Your neck isn't supposed to do that.

I doubt we'd see anything like that after you hit a pedestrian in GTAV.

While I think it will be more important than ever to keep future depictions of violence out of the hands of children, I personally will not have a problem with it, for the simple reason that it is far removed from reality.

Video game graphics will always be stylized, even if they are designed to appear "realistic" they're still designed to look "cool" If you've ever seen real violence and death, or even heard a paramedic or firefigther tell some of their horror stories, there's nothing cool or stylized about it. It's just brutal and sickening. No matter how "realistic" games get, the difference will still be like night and day.

I think we need more detailed violence and gore. COD isn't real enough for me. When I get a headshot kill with a shotgun I want the guys head to explode off. Chunks of it if not the whole thing. I think if kids saw that they would realize if I play with guns in real life this is what could happen.

Of course you have your deranged mental fools who this won't affect at all and still want to commit this level of violence, but for the most it might scare them straight to realize guns should only be used in video games and to witness their destruction from a safe virtual distance only.

@ cybermarco I understand what you mean too about the elephant but you also have to understand elephants are killers too. By nature humans are violent and neither are elephants but provoke or challenged with their lives they can be. And no I don't condone the killing of animals just saying we've been killing all sorts of animals in video games since the SNES days don't let it bother you that much now.

There were moments in God of War 3 that I was surprised were allowed in a videogame. I wasn't bothered that they were in the game, just surprised.

I don't have a problem with any medium using sex or violence as part of its canvas. Movies do it all the time. I'll admit that when you're in a bad mood, smashing in Hercules' face is a nice substitute for your dispatcher at work.

I think that violence in games usually comes without consequence, which is why I pointed out the modern warfare realistic shooters. I would like to see more games where violence has realistic results. On the other hand, when I say that, I think there's also a danger of trying to go the exact opposite way and making a Ninja Gaiden 3, where all the enemies who were previously trying to kill you suddenly start begging for their lives and instead of making you think about the frailty of human life, just makes you think the villain hired the world's absolute worst, least-battle-hardened mercenary force.

^ I get what you mean, I haven't tried to play any GoW yet, but when I saw the E3 trailer of GoW Ascension, when Kratos was fighting with that Elephant-like enemy, I felt uncomfortably when he was ripping him apart, and the expression of the elephant being murdered was some-what disturbing...

I think violence is video game is already too much on current hardware, never mind what's capable on the upcoming machines.

God of War 3 was the game that really hit that point home to me. I remember trying out the demo, and the amount of graphic detail in the violence in game made me feel physically sick. I remember some of the killing animations... you could see the tendons and muscles and organs in detail ripping as the enemies were sliced apart... it was too much.

I'm not opposed to violence in game. And cartoon violence (lack of gore, injury, etc.) is relatively harmless. What I am opposed to is violence for violence sakes. I find myself incapable of understanding why some people enjoy it so much.

There's a reason people treat look upon gaming as a juvenile hobby... because it's entirely willing to present itself as such. The industry needs to grow up. Thankfully, there are at least some games being released right now that show its is willing to.

Well, I agree that it depends on the game. Postal wouldn't make me feel very "weird", because it's 100% absurd. But think about media and debates about violence etc - if they are strong now, the bullshit talk will get stronger after next-gen debut and with more realistic looking games ("LOOK WHAT THESE PSYCHOS DO IN GAMES IT LOOKS SO REAL OOMG").

Cut everyone open! Cut them all!

No it does not make me feel uncomfortable. Without true consequences, no matter how realistic it gets I doubt it ever will make me feel uncomfortable.

The Last of Us is supposed to make you uncomfortable during those scenes. It's trying to show you the brutality of life after an apocalypse. I think that's actually a good thing if you feel that way, rather than in the Call of Duty games where you're just slaughtering faceless brown and Russian people over and over again, with no feeling other than 'Murica, Fuck Yeah!

I think you guys are over estemating next gen engines.

The most impacting stuff will still be cut scene/cinimatic stuff. The games aren't going to be the quality of a Pixar movie.

We are entering a time where games can make people feel compassion, anger, sadness like they do when they watch a movie with real life actors. Games can become even more emotional than movies. You can recreate the expression of pain for example that an actor can't have in a movie because he doesn't really feel that pain, but the programmer can make it more real in a game.

Yes this is uncomfortable, but also opens up lots of possibilities. Don't know if you understand my point.

Next-gen is coming. And what will come with next-gen? Much better graphics, much more realistic models of people, their faces, more realistic animations.

I was wondering... Am I the only one who is a little bit scared that next-gen shooters with modern setting will feel weird? I mean, do you remember Last of Us E3 presentation? I felt uncomfortable during last scenes, when Joel was aiming at this guy's face with a shotgun, and we could see panic and fear, so realistic, at this bandit face. So you know what I mean? Last of Us is still current gen.

Do you think more gamers than now will fell uncomfortable while shooting human enemies in games? I think - yes. And I think we will see more fantasy games and more sci-fi shooters. Halo can has uber-realistic graphics, but still it won't "feel" real, cause it's Halo. Pew pew, lazers, Spartans & stuff.

P.S. Sorry for my not so perfect English :X But I hope you understand what I'm trying to ask here.
