Durango is a code name, an internal project name meant to keep fanbois from exploding in their knickers at the real name. I highly doubt Sony will release a successor to the PS3 and not call it a playstation, the Japanese do like to keep brand names after all.

Anything commented on at this point is pure conjecture, neither machine has finalised specs, we know nothing of how the system will run overall, and we know nothing of what techniques as being used to make the most of the hardware in game, which is all that counts anyway.

The MS vs Sony battle will not be fought on who has the most RAM, most potent GPU, power cord length, case depth, number of lights or fans or whatever other irrelevant number you care to mention but instead will be decided by which company brings the most (decent) titles to the party.

At this stage I think I'd be looking to invest in a modern PC graphics card and wait 18 months for a console instead.

Personally think cloud computing/onlive will be the future of console gaming and hardware spec will become irrelevant. Maybe PS4 is the last time you will ever buy a dedicated gaming boxed system?

Im really curious to how much different the 720 is to the ps4, everything ticks the boxes for the 720 except that the ps4 has better graphics but theres minoir difference id probaly go with the 720 just for the fact that i find the 360s controller to be much better then the ps3s thats if the 720 keeps the same controller design

@spokan It's a code name innit. It's not actually going to be called Durango. Xbox Infinity seems to be the most likely option at the moment. PS4 may well be called Orbis though - guess we'll find that one out tomorrow.

@Eddie

Digital Foundry proved, with cold hard facts, that the 360 ran the vast majority of multiplats noticably better than the PS3.

Not that it should impact anyone's enjoyment of the games, but the facts are what they are.

@livewired500 May I just present my view of the first thing in your comment: X360 does not run multiplats better. I really can't see how people get this idea. I own both consoles but I managed to 'transfer' most games that I bought on my 360 to my PS3. Assassin's Creed is a perfect example, it runs smoother on the PS3, as every other Ubi game, only being surpassed by the PC versions, those are truly worth the wait (week after the console edition is released). Now, games like Skyrim and New Vegas, those are the exception. And GTA IV is mostly the same on both systems. Dark Souls, another terrific game, runs absolutely perfect on both. It mostly depends on the company that is making them, and FarCry 3 is working fine on both since companies like Ubisoft mastered both systems.

Either way, next gen might be a real mess. On gens prior to the one we currently are, people easily could state which machine was the winner without major issues. This gen was so goddamn beautiful on all sides that fanboynism increased in astronomic proportions. Personally, with the PC manufacturers taking the lead on the gaming market, well this will cause much discussion or as they usually say 'shitstorm'.

To me it sounds like they are going to be roughly the same with some minor differences. Kind of like they are now.

Really, the multiplats have only been better for on X360 the last couple of years. And only if devs didn't want to deal with porting well. Look at all the Ubisoft games like AC series and Far Cry and they play almost the same on both systems, http://www.lensoftruth.com/heads-up-far-cry-3-screenshot-comparison-and-analysis/. Of course, I wouldn't play FC3 on console. I don't think games like it or Skyrim really work well on that format.

Halo 4 looked alright. Where I appreciate the graphics in H4 is the multiplayer. They didn't compress the textures that much and the game runs smooth.

Next gens might be able to run Crysis 2 @ 40fps+, but I can't play C2 on Ultra 1920x1200 Native on an i7 OC 4.2Ghz and 660ti without dips into the 30fps range. Biggest issue I had with C2 on the PS3 was the lighting. It was difficult to see the enemies a lot of the time. Either way, I highly doubt NextGens will run C2/C3 on anything above medium settings @1080 Native. Maybe not even that much.

I think we might start to see more Free 2 Play games start to show up on the Next Gens. Games like Planetside 2 would be cool to see on the Orbis. More games with large scale and scope.

Since Killzone3, no one has really tried to push the AI structures that much. With more RAM assets devs should be able to create more dynamic games, hopefully.

@mg

MS doesn't do raytracing thats not their department its done by the CPU so AMD in this case and you can offload some of the work to the GPU but again won't get there. Here is something to be put in perspective Pixar doesn't use raytracing for their movies. THe only movie that used and sparingly mind you was Cars because they wanted to avoid all the overhead ccalculations that would have to happen.

MS is also not going to throw the same amount of money or more than their previous system it had costed them too much money. THey don't have "infinite" and even if they did they want a return on their invest and raytracing is not something that is worth investing when today's engine which none of them support ray tracing so why would they even bother with putting in something like that when Crytek or Unreal 4 doesn't support it. Think for a second.

"If a company like Pixar, which can afford to devote several hours of processing to produce one frame, chooses to use ray tracing sparingly because of its impact on performance, it follows that the time when we'll have enough processing power in the world of real-time 3D to be able to afford to do all the rendering using ray tracing is far off. And people will surely have better things to do with that processing power."

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/ray-tracing-rasterization,2351.html

@PB

It was suggested the ray tracing part was separate to other architecture though?

I guess we won't have long to wait, I feel like MS has something up their sleeves though.

If rumours are to be proved right, the Oban dev units were shipped a while ago while MS has been making changes till very recently.

They also have infinite monies compared to Sony and could really go balls out if they want too...

@mg

Again I repeat no amount of hardware they throw at the machine will allow ray tracing especially since Ray tracing is done by the CPU and as Erth had said they are using a customized mobile processor. Keep dreaming we aren't there yet and won't be not within the next decade.

There's a lot of info in some of the other links, sounds like MS are throwing a lot at the machine and there's a lot of customisation within their hardware.

Doesn't sound like Sony can afford that and it's going to be very much, off the shelf.

i'll wait. not hyped yet. i love and enjoy the wiiu atm and there are some awesome 3ds games coming out soon as well. i think we'll see some great games being announced for wiiu this year. i'm really excited about that.

i am very very interested in the steambox. could be exactly what i've been waiting for. now with bungie, insomniac etc. going multiplat, i begin to feel ready to finally say goodbye to sony and ms...maybe. we'll see.

atm i think ms will play their cards best nextgen. delivering a great, affordable system with good services and features and solid games. they made very few missteps this gen and i really think they understand the biz and market better than sony right now. i really think they will nail it with their next thing.
if i had to blindly choose one now, today, knowing almost no facts yet, i'd choose the nextbox. i have the most comfortable feeling that the xbox will be a great console.

sony....i want them to surprise me...but i cannot see that happening yet, i think they'll just go style over substance again. wowing me with some great looking games. question will be: is that enough? it's tough competition. i like some of their games, but out of the big three the ps3 was my least used console this gen...steambox could become a real hit or a huge flop. i think it's timed right and there is a market for it but only time will tell.

I'm thinking a reveal in the next few months in some form or another, could be sooner than you think.

I love all this though, I've put my rig buying on hold to see what gets announced.

I hope MS go all out as that will be my first next gen purchase, transfer all my stuff from my 360 over.

If the ray tracing rumours are true, things are going to look mental next gen (bear in mind I haven't been gaming atall on PC)

"I know you have a crazy PC but surely on a closed system things can look a lot better than the equivalent PC tech."

Not true at all. Halo 4 was developed for the one console in mind with the best devkits available for the system with the best Xbox engineers. If you are going to develop something like that for the PC in mind with equivalent PC tech it will look better.

Look at the Blizzard games or other games that are made for the PC. Like Witcher II. It looks fantastic and it was made for the PC in mind and then ported to XBOX 360.

"What would you say the jump was compared to 360 / PS3 if these specs are true?"

specs for the next gen are still not confirmed. So far we know that it is based on Jaguar + AMD's mobile "Pitcairn" design - the Radeon 7970M.

Too early to say something, but next gen consoles can easily run Crysis 2 or 3 in 40 or 60 frames per second. Yah! :) All games will not just look better, but we are going to see new Gameplay ideas.

Games like Assassins Creed were impossible to do on the PS2, but possible on the PS3. I can't imagine what is possible to do on the next gen platforms. Games will be great, that's for sure.

As for multi plats, doesn't Direct X intergaration also help MS next console. Won't the PS use the same system from PS3, doesn't that make the 720 even more similar to PC architecture?

What would you say the jump was compared to 360 / PS3 if these specs are true?

Similar to the jump from PS2 to PS3 or a lot less?

I know you have a crazy PC but surely on a closed system things can look a lot better than the equivalent PC tech. Halo 4 for example looks pretty amazing on such outdated tech.

Also, how quick do you think tablets will be able to catch up with these specs considering tablet tech seems to be getting crazy good very quickly, how will these consoles last 5 plus years?

Next Gen consoles will use 8 core mobile processor from AMD with "Jaguar" technology in mind. So much for next gen.

Previous last gen Quad Core CPU from Intel shits on it. Grandma's these days have i5 processor that is already more powerfull then the next gen according to Digital foundry then.

But one thing is good for sure for the PC is that both XBOX and next PS is heavily based on the traditional PC hardware. Basically they are PC's and with that, ports will be much easier to make for the PC's which is really good news.
I remember when PS3 and Xbox 360 launcched, first year was a mess for the PC because of shitty hardware from both consoles.

"That said, the AMD connection that defines both Durango and Orbis confirms that both consoles are much closer in design to gaming PCs than their predecessors, which may result in stronger ports to the computer format" (c)

I'm interested in SteamBox hardware. That will be interesting. If they are going to make a console where you can upgrade the hardware then good bye Sony and MS. I will never return to them.

"not to mention the upcoming Steam Box - a piece of hardware free to evolve and grow more powerful year upon year in a way that Sony and Microsoft's boxes can't." (c)

@monkey, the only reason why Sony had crappy multiplat titles is because of crappy Cell microprocessor CPU, now, PS4 hardware is heavily based on the PC hardware so if PS4 is more powerfull then the next XBOX, multiplat titles will look better on the PS4 without a doubt.

New Eurogamer article suggesting PS4 will be more powerful than 720:

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/df-hardware-orbis-unmasked-what-to-expect-from-next-gen-console

Sounds very similar to the PS3 and 360 situation.

Will it be a repeat of this gen?

720 multiplatform titles to perform better and a few PS4 exclusives to look better, not long to find out!

I AM EXCITE!!!
