Play chronovolt, the epitome of horrendous trophy design. They actually designed it so that only gold trophy in there is nigh impossible without buying dlc, and it so happens that the shitty move is done on the last of 27 levels just to frustrate the player enough to force him to buy dlc.

I like trophys if they enhance the game by making them meta challenges like beating a boss the hard way. I like the badge of honor type trophy's too for beating optional bosses.(remember how FFVIII kinda had a trophy that appeared in the mainmenu if you beat omega? good times.)

Luck based trophy's can piss right off though. Like get that insanely rare drop from an insanely rare monster.
Pointless crap needs piss off too. Like getting an achievement just for pausing the game.

Legal disclaimer: I am a trophy whore.

I like trophies, and if you hate trophies on general principle, then this may not be the thread for you. I too hate trophies when they are used as a delivery mechanism for skinner box hooks, but that's not what this thread is about.

I wanna talk about what makes a good trophy, a trophy that is good for the player experience. If you're against the very existence of trophies just on general principle, then you're opinion won't do much good here. If, however, you're against shitty trophies, of which there are many, then go for it... VENT!

THE GOOD(1): I like trophies that encourage you to take on challenges, like say beating Dead Space with only the plasma cutter, or beating Dishonored without magic, or stealthing your way through Deus Ex/Dishonored.

BUT, it's very important to know when you've fucked it up, both Deus Ex and Dishonored should TELL you CLEARLY when you've fucked up, rather than you getting to the end of the level (or the end of the game, Deus Ex I'm lookin' at you) only to find that some bastard, somewhere spotted you.

THE GOOD(2): I also like exploration trophies. Go to 100 locations, find all of the diaries, find all of the weapon upgrade stations. But again, there really should be some system to help you find them all.

I don't mean signposts, only a system like in say Jak and Daxter 1, where every area has a list of how many missions, orbs, fly scouts and power cells you have found in that level. It doesn't tell you what they are or where they are, only that you haven't found them yet. That shit should be standard.

I love exploration, and I'm happy to do it by myself, but I'd like to know whether there's anything left to find or am I just wasting my time...

THE BAD(1): Online trophies in inherently offline games, just fuck off. Especially the "Be in the top 100 in the world" type that I understand you have in Lost Planet 2? If it's a predominantly online game, then that's fine, but I think games like Uncharted 2, and Borderlands strike a nice balance. They make you dip your toes in and test the waters, but don't put you through hell.

THE BAD(2): Meaningless, grindy trophies can fuck off too. If you have a trophy for maxing out your level, then you should have enough shit to do in the game to make that fun. Don't make me do stupid shit. New Vegas was like that, you had people constantly breaking their legs and healing it with stimpacks for some trophy. Or picking 50 pockets, or reviving the thieves guild.

Here's a tip, don't build a system where I pickpocket, fail, reload, succeed. Make some kind of skill to pick-pocket successfully. And don't make me accept and then refuse thieving missions until I get the one I want. Just give me the whole list of jobs in that town and let me go do my thing. That would have turned that shitty Skyrim trophy into an enjoyable one, and cut the time it took in half...

Sorry guys, I'm just venting here really, I have too much time on my hands in the office today... :/
