Not that often. Usually, if a game fails to grab me I'll put it aside indefinitely, (with some vague intention to pick it up at a later time in order to justify the initial purchase) move on, and not look back.

Happened with GTAIV. Will I ever give it another try? Perhaps the release of V may incite me to do so, but really nothing short of a new release & the realization that I'm so very far behind will convince me to give a game that flopped the first time a second chance over the myriad other games I'd rather play.

Oddly, I've actually had this happen in reverse: where I've played a game, loved it, then gone back to replay it a few months later & couldn't get into it. Happened with Drake's Fortune. Was strange because 1st time through it was one of the greatest games I'd ever played up to that point. Still love it. Perhaps it was too soon.

(on an unrelated note: does anyone else find those reCAPTCHA things way too fucking hard to decipher? I have to cycle through it 5 times before I get one where I can actually make out all the letters.)

This doesn't happen to me often, but Fallout: New Vegas is one example that comes to my mind. When released I wasn't at all excited about it, knowing it was the work of Obsidian, whom at the time I was thinking very lowly of them. I started playing the game and I couldn't play the game due to game-breaking bugs and crash to desktops. So I just gave up on it.

I think it was TheWulf that highly motivated me to go back to NV and after all these times the game updates fixed most of the game-breaking flaws. So, I jumped in and start the game, it was a pleasant experience, much pleasant experience compared to Fallout 3, in fact I loved it very much that I started to believe in Obsidian again. So, thanks TheWulf, I think I never actually thanked you for it.

Hm yea there are some interesting views out there with you guys but it does seem like a common quality in a gamer with a collection.

The way in which I get rid of a game I no longer wish to keep and know for a fact I will never have the urge to play again, is to trade it to a friend, whether for keepsies or just borrowing. For example, just last week my friend said he was interested in playing through MW2 again but he sold it ages ago. I still had it, so he asked if I wanted to trade his MW3 for my MW2 (he had 2 MW3's; one for xbox and one for ps3 which he didn't use anymore) so I said hell yea. I was finished with MW2 a long time ago and I'm not a very big CoD fan, especially when it comes to the online but the survival/spec ops/campaign are right up my alley.

@Dave, that's a little different than what I was getting at because it's a game that's already established as one you love, but it still does fit the bill of seeing a game with a different perspective.

My gaming career started with the PS1 when I was little (yes, I'm not that old), and I occasionally try to go back and play some of those games that were just so great back then, but a lot really don't hold up. My personal favourites were the entire Spyro series, and those games still have amazing gameplay in comparison to some of what we're shoved today.

@ejams yeah this happens to me at times for sure. It's a nice feeling to go back and see games in a different light. I make a point of playing through Final Fantasy 7 like every 4-5 years not through any pre-planned rule, I just get the urge again as I really enjoy it.

Agree about selling games. When I do buy games and try to sell them its fucking robbery what hey give you for them.

I do never sell may games, i have quite a large collection from the past and this gen i think i have more than 60 ps2 titles, 60 xbox titles, 50 gamecube titles, more than 100 ps3 tittles, more than 100 xbox 360 tittles, more than 100 wii titles, 30 Ds titles and 20 psp titles, and i think i will never sold my games, in case the manufacturers decide going singleplayer connected online games, or digital as it stands today, i will have quite a collection to keep me happy in the future.

As for the point at hand yes it happens to me a lot, thats the reason as soon a received a game and i dont like it, i stop playing it, and then coming back a few months, years later, and end up loving it, i think this is a common thing for a gamer, you are not alone

Slightly different angle for me. Some games I keep for a while to give it a second go and still don't get on with them. Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Fallout, Bioshock. All I played a bit and didn't get on with but thought I'd maybe missed something or wasn't in the right mood for them. Gave them a second (or even third) go some way down the line and still didn't get it. :)

@Poly
I've been quite a big trader of games more recently. My shelf is quite bare. Anything I don't absolutely want to keep or want to continue playing online I trade on. The way I look at it costs me money if I don't. Very rarely I'll want to rebuy a game, and in those circumstances they are always cheaper than I got as a trade in.

That said I do have a substantial pile of shame, physical and digital. PS+ sub has helped the digital one grow quite substantially too. I very rarely buy games on day of release anymore. Unless there is a substantial friends playing online element I can wait.

I've never sold my games. I've thought about it but when it came down to doing it I could never part with them. This has left me with a massive collection of games, like Poly I own almost every system (No vita yet) and buy roughly 4 games a week. I also love buying the really terrible games (keeps the costs down, and I they can be quite fun) So I quite often never finish a game. I only ever finish the AAA's like Mass effect, Bio shock, Tales ect. So when it's the holidays and my time at work gets a bit relaxed I normally go though all those games I buy and just marathon through them.

Been like it since I was a kid, would buy loads of cheap Megadrive games, only finish the popular ones, come school holidays I would just sit and play through all those games I never finished during the year.

i used to sell a lot of games i finished this gen. A LOT....i almost sold any game i wouldn´t play online. i was crazy. the reason for that was that i owned all three systems, had a psp a ds, now 3ds as well. bought tons of games and kinda needed some cash back. if you regulary buy games for 4 or even 5 systems this is some serious cash you are spending. i knew i lost money selling them but i argued to myself that the difference i payed is the price for the great entertainment i had. i still think you can look at it that way but at the same time you are still losing money. that said i will really try to focus next gen. pick games AND game systems more wiseley. next gen i wont buy all three systems. i think i am done with that. no, i know it, i wont do that, even if that means that i will miss out on some great games.

i craved to replay a lot of games i played, especially some of the early mid gen ones....so i ended up rebuying MANY games a year ago to now. rebought, the original lost planet orange box, bioshock, fable II, DmC4, alan Wake and many many more and started replaying them. still have a lot here that i haven´t replayed.
i loved every minute of replaying them and i decided not to trade in games anymore, maybe only if i really hated them. it´s just not worth it. i am looking forward to replay some of those games 10 years from now. i miss many games of my childhood as well....why because i´ve always been so stupid to sell my stuff! don´t do it kids, you´ll only regret it later;(

Oh shit yeah, that reminds me, I have Biohazard 5 on the pile as well. And Skyward Sword, and Kirby... In fact, most of my Wii games are awaiting the advent of a GC and blu-ray compatible Wii U, not that that will ever happen. >.<

@ ejams: I always enjoy a game better the second time around. Think it's because if I know what to do and where to go it makes the whole experience feel a lot more cohesive. I usually wait about 2 years before I consider going for a second play through.

When I first played Uncharted 2 I didn't enjoy it that much (I know, shock horror.)... well what I mean is that I didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would. I played it again just over 2 years later because I had a sudden urge for it and loved it. Now its one of my fav titles ever.

I kind of think it just depends on how your feeling at the time and what you've got a need or taste for. I've given up playing the latest releases when they've just come out. Instead when I finish up a game I have a think about what I want to play next and what I'm in the mood for and I let that decide. I finished RE 0 a couple of days ago, im sitting with loads of modern AAA titles but I had an itch for an old school Resi experience so I went for it.

@ Telepathic.Geometry: LOL I love a bit of stock piling aswell and for the exact same reason as you :D got RDR, Alan Wake, L.A Noire, Skyward Sword... and thats only naming a few.

edit: these are all games I did start initially but it just wasn't what I was looking for at the time.

First game I bought all year was RE6, stuck it on and it wasn't really doing much for me, then Dishonored came out and it killed my social life for 2 weekends lol. So yeh I just go with the flow these days instead of letting the release schedule decide for me :P

I totally get what you're saying here man! I had the same problem with Fallout 3. Played it a bit, got really frustrated with the long intro, wandered off in the WRONG direction and got raped to death by every horror the game has bar Deathclaws, and said "Fuck this shit!"

Then, a few years later, played the shit out of it after getting a few pointers here and there from a friend, and loved it to bits, platinumed it and everything!

I often get this from movies actually, I didn't like "Blade" or "I went down" at all in the cinema, but when I watched them years later on DVD, I really appreciated them.

Oh and one more thing. I LOVE stockpiling games for those long dry-spells. I have Red Dead, Rage, Arkham City, Crysis 2, Portal 2, Doom III, and Child of Eden on standby until I have the games I'm focused on right now polished off, and because I have that buffer, I tend to only buy must-have games.

DON'T forget, between PS3 and PS4 there will be the best part of a year where we don't have much decent to play, probably from May 2013 on. You'll need a few games in reserve.

Winter is coming.

Ever since I stopped selling games to Gamestop (years ago now, finally realized it's just not worth it at all), I have amassed quite the collection of PS3 games from the years.

Now sometimes when I get a new game I'll go through it and have an alright time but it just isn't what I expected (for example Bioshock, Killzone 2 etc) so I'll finish it then put it back on the shelf for a period of time.

Months, maybe years go by and I suddenly just get the urge to randomly play one of these games that I originally just didn't find very fun or appealing for whatever reason. It's kind of like getting really hyped for a completely new game, when it's been there on the shelf all along.

This happens to me quite frequently where it takes a second playthrough to actually enjoy a game the way it was intended. Like listed above, Killzone 2 (the controls completely turned me off the first time playing), Bioshock (I think this one might've also been a control issue for me), Alpha Protocol (was expecting Syphon Filter on PS3), and a more recent one Fallout New Vegas (I just got that feel after disliking it for so long) turned it on Hard with Hardcore mode and it's some of the most fun I've had in gaming in quite awhile. I am now on to GTA 4 in wake of the fifth just around the corner and it does have it's flaws, but I can already tell this is gonna be quite an adventure.

How about you guys? When you get certain games that turn you off right away, do you come back later with a new mindset and have a completely different experience playing? This goes for all consoles/PC etc.

*This is a real bitch when a bunch of sexy new games come out and all I want to do is go back and play these older games, but it's about the experience after all :)*
