Gears of War defined this gen before the 360 even launched . It was Epic's demo of Gears running on 512 RAM, that convinced Microsoft to ditch their 256 RAM model.

That decision has helped Microsoft greatly imo.

Having read Polygon's recent brilliant feature on Homefront's development (http://www.polygon.com/2012/11/1/3560318/homefront-kaos-studios-thq), I'm going to try to turn this argument on its head and say maybe a game like Homefront could be considered gen-defining.

I mean in the sense that it embodied this middle-of-the road section of the AAA scene that has almost died out this gen, as well as the fact that its miserable development cycle (and eventual closing) can be reflected in a lot of other studios these last few years. Read the feature and you'll kind of see what I mean.

Skyrim was actually a game changer in many ways, so that could be seen as defining too.

RapeLay deserves a mention also. As does Battle Raper. And Tomb Raper.

I'm only going to list the games that defined this generation of consoles for me, rather than list what everyone else wrote already.

The best 360 moments to me were spent when Oblivion was launched, I love and still love that game, more than Skyrim overall actually, though I love it too. The first time I played Oblivion was a magical experience, I was completely hooked.

The other games that hooked me and made this console gen for me are as follows.

Fallout 3 and Fallout:new vegas
Bioshock 1 and 2
Dead space 1 and 2
Dragons Age: Origins and DA:2
Deus Ex:Human Revolution
Mass Effect series
Alan Wake
Skyrim
Halo 3
Viva Pinata

And on a lesser note Kameo...it was the first game I played on the 360 and I marveled at the amount of characters on the screen, and the beautiful colorful HD graphics. It was the launch game that brought me into the current gen.

Resident Evil 5?? Dropped everything it once stood for to become a steroid infused, muscle bound, heavily action based, left trigger/right trigger shooter... Consider the band wagon well and truly jumped on. I do enjoy that game though :D

Gears of war for sure, especially the 1st one. Space marines ahoyyyy :P I always laugh when I see that Uncharted 'Next gen filter' lol.

Anyone who mentioned COD is totally right, if you had to explain this gen to your children you'd be saying the words Call of Duty... a lot.

edit: Anything that gets you waggling a Wii wand... oh wait, was that last gen?? :P

A defining game is one that changes the shape of the market. So (IMHO), WoW, CoD4, Guitar Hero, Wii Sports and Wii Fit. *Maybe* League of Legends and Gears of War, too. Oh, and Angry Birds.

Everything else is too core or too niche to have had a signifact impact on the industry.

Btw, I don't play *any* of the games listed - for me, this gen was all about Mass Effect, Portal, Assassin's Creed, BioShock and Bionic Commando.

Hmmm... tough one. If I was to name a defining game for this Gen I would like to say Dead Space.

It was a great looking game when it was released, even if it was mostly in tight corridors. It has its occasional vistas that looked incredible and the Necromorphs (was that what they were called? Brain vomiting) looked gruesomely detailed.

The foreboding atmosphere: the constant jumps and "scares" around every corner, helped immensely by the game's sound effects. This was one of the first games I played start to finish with surround sound, and along with playing this game in a dark room made it heart-wrenching.

In my opinion it is the closest thing we have had to a console based "Survival Horror" (PC says "hi" with Amnesia), and was an original IP published by EA, a ridiculous thought for back then!

Why I cannot say for certain its a "defining game"? Just because that the reason I hold Dead Space so highly is that I did not expect it to be as good as it was! I picked it up on a whim for £10 in a local Game Shop after the disappointment that was Prince of Persia, and only 15 minutes in I was blown away by it. It has been a while since a game blew my expectations away like it did.

@absolutezero: I wish games like Dishonored (and to a certain extent, Deus Ex: HE) were copied more because they have so many features I like and think work for any game bar downloadable indies.

That is: 1) A detailed world filled with enough detail to act as a story-teller; 2) An alternative to the kill everything that moves paradigm of modern gaming; 3) Multiple ways to complete any task.

I think that this 3rd is the most important, and is something that PC gaming tends to do better. So many console games don't have that freedom, so many that we often don't even test the boundaries of the game world any more...

It doesn't matter if individual elements are entirely new or not, the package was, and it did define. It's a benchmark other games are measured against and aspire to.

Lol, yeah it does seem like a *i luv CoD*, but that's because I do believe that franchise has dominated & defined this gen.

Nothing has matched its success & it's a constant reference point. As I said before for good or ill CoD is the big dog this gen.

Impact and defining are two fairly broad terms. Before this gen, CoD was really just a reasonably succesful series. It wasn't until the first Modern Warfare that it really blew up.

That's why I think it fits. It just embodies the main focus of publishers in recent years.

It really is hard to pick anything out of AAA though. If you look at BF3 you have a game that is technically impressive, but actually has fewer truly defining features than BF2, which was the one that made the attempt to have people working together, instead of flailing around.

It's mostly more of the same, publishers grabbing from the same pot of generic features to add at all costs.

I guess I'd give an honorable mention to The Witcher 2 for advancing the quality of the writing.

@IM you mean it pulled in some existing elements from a different genre (MMORPGs, or normal RPGs for that matter). Hybridisation isn't new or defining! Leveling up in an FPS has been done in various mods before, I recall some Quake2 RPG mod with persistent character leveling.

Guns were purchasable in other FPS games/mods long before COD as well. Instead of money you now have xp and unlocks instead. It's the same concept - time played = new toys.

I'm not bashing it, I think it has it's place, it's jut that place isn't or at least shouldn't be on a generation defining pedestal.

@silk, Call of Duty's online levelling template almost single-handedly defined the design of the entire multiplayer landscape. That's a pretty defining thing right there, however one may feel about the inherent gameplay.

@OrbitMonkey: This feels like a thinly veiled COD appreciation thread! It's great you have such passions for the game, I can't remember the last time I felt that hyped about one particular series or game.

But CoD isn't actually "defining". I'm sure it's a good game, and we can't refute that it's popular and well known. But it doesn't do anything that other games before it haven't done. In fact it's just CS, but prettier. And even then there are much prettier games that do the same.. *cough* BF3 *cough*.

I don't think everyone has played it, I happened to have a 5 minute blast of Black Ops on a console demo at a LAN and was honestly largely un-impressed. Then again I'm not a BF3 fan either, though you'd be hard pushed to convince me CoD is the superior of the two - probably because I'm a PC gamer..

Genre defining would have to be something that has positively impacted our generation of gamers in a noticeable manner. Again, hate to be a nay sayer but I hate the fact that our COD, FIFA etc. re-hashes are dominant, because I feel it has a *detrimental* effect on creativity and versatility of games as a whole.

The real thing that looks to me like it'll be defining our generation, will be the Double Fine adventure game when it's released. It'll be the first successful Kickstarter project, and it pretty much advertised kickstarter to the world as a means to get new IP created directly from the demands of the gamers rather than a publisher.

That's pretty damn defining. I'll let you get back to your generic FPS sequel #68 now. ;)

Ok ok ok different slant, what games do you wish were the Defining games of this generation? As in what mechanics would you really like to see filter through into other genres/games. What game would you increase the impact of?

I think thats where the Souls games come into their own. I want to developers taking note. Never under-estimate the amount of work your fanbase is ready to put in if you reward them for it. Never be afraid to lock off entire areas behind TWO destructable walls. Embrace the community and discussion aspect of the internet.

@Digital Bamboo To be honest I didn't think of it like that, but Nintendo have had touch screen since the DS in '04, 3 years before the first iPhone(which I would class as the first mainstream smartphone) and 5 years before Angry Birds. I would then assume, because of the success the DS had that Nintendo would develop it further and included it in future products regardless of the 'boom' in mobile gaming.

I would love to say Mass Effect and the ability to carry over/on my progress and story decisions through each game. Sadly, no other games seem to really do this so I can't really say it's defining. Which is a big shame imo. I would love to see it happen more, especially in games that are due to be a trilogy.

@Christopher Jack
CoD's core mechanics haven't evolved this generation? Are you loopy? The way it does online redefined how other games do it since. It's why it's so successful as a franchise.

On the Uncharted 2 thing. A game can be one you consider one of the greatest without it being generation defining. Two very different questions. I'd consider the Souls games some of the greatest, but not generation defining. Some people haven't really picked up on that point in this thread and just put down games they really enjoyed.

Stuff like Banjo Nuts and Bolts and Bioshock. How have they defined this generation? There have been a few which I never would have considered, but the arguments put by the proposers have been good. Braid for example I saw and my immediate thought was "?". However Michael put forward a good argument for it's inclusion.

It doesn't matter about mechanics, it's about which games have defined this gen. Those three have forced the competition to respond reactively way more than some critically acclaimed core (but ultimately niche) game. QED.

Yeah, but they both really came into their own after 2005. In around 2006 for WoW and 2007 for Guitar Hero, to be precise. They've since gone on to dominate the mainstream's perception of videogames, even more than Wii Sports or Wii Fit.

Sadly none of those franchises you mentioned even launched this generation, nor have their core mechanics evolved in the slightest.

This gen's defining games in terms of sales and impact are, in fact, World of Warcraft, Call of Duty 4 and Guitar Hero.

All Activision products, funnily enough.

Aye, quite true. COD is ubiquitous.
