Maybe the player doesn't want to pick up the plate every time he wants the five golden coins that the designer put on top of it.

Sure, real life, that's fun. Maybe in the next one they'll let me do my taxes and go take a shit every 24-48 hours.

To me that's not really quality. I'd prefer it if they kept the real life stuff to a point where it's still entertaining.

"That's both good and bad though. How many times do you really find yourself needing to pick up a pot or a broom".Just like in real life isn't it?It's not a matter of necessity to pick up stuff but the actual freedom for you,the player to decide are you going to pick it up or not.As for Dishonored,it was a simple designer choice since it makes a lot of noise I guess.

I can understand making them physical objects, because it's neat when stuff flies around, but collectible ones? Thats where it crosses over into a bad gimmick in my opinion.

Ironically Dishonored has the opposite problem. I'd like to be able to throw any old object to make noise, but for some reason it has to be a bottle.

@DSB It's not just on scale though,it's the freedom the game gives you and as I said, unlike in Rage, you can interact with pretty much anything at any time.

Thing is, the Gamebryo engine runs on very simple scripting, which is essentially the achilles heel of the Elder Scrolls games.

They have a lot of content, and as long as you see it all as one long adventure you're okay, but the moment you start to see the systems for what they are, it just starts to look ridiculous.

It's all simple triggers and commands.

It's pretty frustrating when you feel like you're getting close to doing some of the stuff you might do in the old Thief games, and then you hit some barrier of disbelief caused by the very basic mechanics.

I think the biggest problem for those games is Bethesdas arrogance though. A lot of the bugs in the games are basically scripting errors that can be fixed using simple console commands, but for some reason they're too good to fix their ultra simple code, even though those mistakes break quests.

For it to become truly amazing they need some more quality in the gameplay, instead of just quantity in the content. It is impressive just on scale alone though.

ID tech 5 is not meant for an open world games, not to mention the problems the PC version of Rage encountered on arrival (most of them were related to AMD drivers but still). While I agree that it looks pretty, the world in Rage looked really static, you couldn't interact with anything except the things you were intentionally suppose to which really made them out of place(just like some of the textures were :) ).

The problem is that people don't see how amazing the engine of skyrim already is. The game is full of bugs? Yes. But just look at the size of the world, and see how everything in this world is tracked. How do you think it's possible that a weapon you left on the ground in riften, then you travelled to Markarth, then back and you find your weapon there exactly in the same place you left it. The ID engine (at least in RAGE) couldn't even pre-load the textures!

In skyrim everytime you leave a dungeon or city the whole world is reloaded within minutes, all the items and people are in their place. And the people, they don't have a order to do their activitys, there's this woman in the HearthFire dlc that sells you log. Everytime I go to the mill I have to search for her, because she don't have a routine.

This is all tracked by the engine, I don't think ID would be good at this from what I've seen in rage

If RAGE was supposed to be a tech demo, I would highly recommend that id Software consider committing suicide. What a fucking turd that was.

Bethesda have gotten a lot of stick for the PS3 version of Skyrim, with its many bugs and sometimes unplayable frame rates and extortionate load times.

Bethesda, owned by ZeniMax,

ID, owned by ZeniMax...

ID is famous for creating amazing engines (ID Tech 5, ie RAGE) Which runs pretty well on all formats, why dont Zenimax use ID to create a company engine that all their dev teams can use. Why didn't Bethesda use ID Tech 5 (which I think was rumored at one point) for Skyrim? As ID has proven that they are not really up to scratch creating and open world game (RAGE was considered open world by the critics and fans but denied by ID). With ID's amazing ability to create working engines that runs almost perfectly (**cough**AMD DRIVER BUG**cough**) coupling this with Bethesda's ability to create amazing open world games this combination could create something truly amazing.

Instead ZeniMax have ID working on Doom 4, which I am excited for, but I would of much prefered Doom 4 instead of RAGE as I did like RAGE for what it was it just seemed to be a needless and pointless game to use the new engine on.

Any thoughts???
