We agree on that point. I posted it here on VG24/7 before, but some game dev said that it was important not to lead gamers into non-interesting/no-fun gameplay with trophies. And if I really think it's impossible, I won't go for it.

Take the Challenge modes in Batman and Vanquish, I don't realistically expect to ever get those trophies, but every once in a while, I do like to chip away at them, see if I can't up my game, because I regard the trophies as a part of the game's cleared-state. I was collecting all the bottles in Zelda, clearing all the levels in SuperMarioWorld and scanning and upgrading everything in Metroid before trophies or cheevos were invented. That's just the way I play.

There's no trophy for collceting all of the runes and bone-charms in Dishonored, but I fucking did it anyway... :)

Agreed on the Easy-mode comment. For sure.

I played Rayman Origins to plat (one of the few games I have) and some of the time trials on that game were excruciatingly difficult. I feel your pain, I just feel that if it's not fun, what's the point?

(I get the point)

Good job all these trophies never need polishing eh.

I was hoping someone would suggest that. I'm playing on Hard, so I can't take more than 5 or 6 hits, but if I were playing on Easy, and I could just crash through to Hades on my head without bothering to avoid much of anything, wouldn't that be even worse? What would be the point of it at all?

And YES! It IS hard being a filthy trophy whore! ;D

@f_s: Yeah, that's the one. It just doesn't even feel challenging, because if you hit one thing, you have to hit the next three or four things too, because the animation gets in the way of seeing what's coming next, and it takes time, so you get raped every time you make one slip. It's like getting un-interruptably combo-ed, no fun, just attrition.

I'll beat it though, and then I'll move on... just wish they'd play-tested it more...

In general:
TIMED MISSIONS!!! (ruined Dead Rising for me).
Poor server support.
QTEs.
Bugs/glitches (unless humorous).
Cheaters (except fun ones like jet pack in GTA: SA, you know, when cheats were about making a game fun).
The overuse of caves, tombs, etc in games like TES.
Those were just the things that really annoy me to an extreme, to name all the little things that bugged me in specific games would take too long.

^Is that the bit where you fall down a tunnel with broken shit and debris all over the place? Yeah that was a frustrating piece of shit section of the game. If I recall right there are also bits that it looks like you can get through but you can't which is also shitty.

Long memory sections in a game, sections where reflexes and subtle cues from the game are useless, and you just have to trial and repeat it until you perfect it. I'm descending into Hades now from the labyrinth on Hard Mode and fuck me if it doesn't piss me off something fierce. It's too long and annoying to be considered a challenge.

A racing game or Demon's Souls is different, you're learning something a little deeper. Should I bank more there, or take the shortcut, or should I lure out the weak guys or tank up on the main guy and blow my wad on an AoE spell or some shit like that... But this section in GoW III is just, down left, right, right, down, down, left right, up, left... Shit, right, next time I'll try down left, right, right, down, down, left right, up, up and hope for the best... :/

Thanks man, I really really felt a sense of accomplishment on these ones. I think this is the difference between old school games (when we were young, and had lots of time, and had no real respect for that time) and now.

I'm an old man now, and I don't have the time or patience for that kind of trial and error bullshit now that time is a precious commodity. /high fives polygem

Jayzus, I ran into another brick wall trying to beat the R&C 3 V-comic speed runs, and almost put an end to a controller, but last night when I got back from work I was somehow in the zone! I polished off the R&C V-comic speed runs in about ten minutes a piece and then the R&C 2 spaceship ring-run level first time (still can't believe that) to get two golds and two platinum trophies...

FINISHED!!! ^-^

i love R+c too, but i´m not into trophies/ achievements much so that flying part didn´t bother me at all. the one game i really did care for gamerscore was halo reach and it gives me another reason to dislike achievements. i have every avhievement for halo reach (the main game disc copy). even the one where you have to jump off a cliff and then assassinate an elite you have to land on...i do NOT have every achievement of some of the map packs. there are three or four missing. that said, halo reach doesn´t show in my list of games i have unlocked every achievement for. i totally have for the main game. just not the dlc, but because i already owned the dlc when i finally got that last achivement it seems like microsoft doesnt count it as 100% completion. i´m getting punished for buying everything day one? game and dlc? hmmm, sounds like a broken system to me then. wiht dlc coming faster and faster this is a shit, not well thought out system. it distracts from the fun. it is stressfull and another reason for the uselesness of achievements/ trophies.

"Backtracking isn´t fun"...well i agree with absloutezero here. if done right, backtracking can be a real joy. i loved backtracking in metroid prime, castlevania etc. it is so much fun to go back to cetain areas in dawn of sorrow or lords of shadows, but back to topic.

i also have to agree with:

halo reach: armour lock - the only other thing about reach that doesn´t scream love and perfection
well let´s add team killing to get a powerweapon in BTB in halo too. i am not sure if you should blame gamedesign or just the stupidity and devastating egoism of humanity for it though- still, it is one of the most annoying things in gaming ;(

COD: prestiging

Lost Planet 2: it killed the franchise i loved

Coop in fable 2

fable 3: it killed.....

pilotwings resort: timer in free flight mode- stipid stupid stupid...loe to fly around that island jus for the sake of flying around...

@DrDamn: totally with you about the UC bit...don´t hope too much for UC3 though. it is a great game but...well you´ll see, i guess.

that said: hated the mp in UC3 too. had so much potential but it is broken imho. it feels lie wasting time. the hit detection the gun balancing. it is clumsy...not working for a mp shooter game me thinks, which is a shame. if you have a game like gears of war to compete with in the tps mp department you just have to try harder...

the only near perfect games this gen in my book:

castlevania ds games, esp. dawn of sorrow
halo reach
mario galaxy 1 and 2
zelda skyward sword
metroid prime 3
DK country returns
nsmb ds
zelda spirit tracks
kirby return to dreamland
The orange box
portal 2
mk7
bayonetta
wipeout HD/fury
geometry wars
ratchet and clank Tools of destrucion/a crack in time

those are almost flawless games, perfectly crafted. there might be stuff in it that i do not like but overall, the gamedesign is just right.
there are many other fun games i loved, like castlevania lord of shadows, the resistance games, metal gear and so on...but those are the ones i can easily think back off and remember them as flawless or close to flawless games. those just are the ones that automatically came to my mind...it´s not 100% thought out i admit and while i have played many of the current gen games i haven´t played every game this gen. there are many nintendo games on the list because i think nintendo still are the best in designing and polishing their games right.

I don't give a flying fuck about trophies, & find it annoying whenever the stupid notifications pop-up on my screen with an audible chime. Even worse is the fact that there is no way to disable them. Total bullshit!

"Backtracking isn't fun."

but but but Metroid ;_;

Castlevania!

Oh I have another one Degenerating/Breakable Weapons have never added anything positive to any game they have ever appeared in. Not once did they increase tension, or create a connection or whatever. They serve no other purpose than to irritate and frustrate.

If you want players to experience a wide variety of weapons instead of sticking with something that they like for the entire game then either make all the weapons equally interesting, or make the better weapons upgradable/changable while giving the boring ones stat upgrades. Mean you could get a shitty brick that was great, but you could add gems to the shiny sword to make it better aswell.

Just don't have either of them break for no fucking reason, its a sword and its a brick its not going to fall apart if I smash someone on the head with either a few times. Repair costs in everything are bullshit, I should be spending my money on cool shit not fucking house-keeping.

Well, one thing that nearly makes me rage quit every game no matter what is when stupid developers like fucking Ubisoft decide to prolong a death scene, or worse: take control from you when you die.

I dare you to play Splinter Cell: Conviction, die and then hit ESC to quit the game. Not going to happen. Go ahead watch your character turn into a rag doll, isn't that fun?

So fucking many videogames adopt that. Why the fuck would you choose to piss off the player on purpose? I think i speak for everybody when i say that everytime i die, i want to return immediately and try again. Why would they choose to not only take control from you, but also make you watch your failure. That doesn't make me happy.

Another thing that pisses me off are long loading times after death. What the fuck, do you expect your players to die once, or why do i have to stare at the loading screen for 15 seconds?

Big culprit here is Ghost Recon Future Soldier. It's easy to mess something up in the game, so naturally you want to reload the checkpoint. Good luck watching that loading screen. Messed up again? How about another loading screen?

One thing that really annoys the fuck out of me that games like Borderlands 2 share is the quest system. It's so god damn old, i don't understand why they still do this.

"HEY, DUDE, COME TO ME, I MIGHT HAVE QUEST FOR YOU."

No, no fuck you. Just tell me the quest right fucking now. Why do i have to visit your lazy ass? Why don't you just give me the quest when i enter the specific area? Do i really have to run back and forth all the fucking time?

Another thing that bothered me about Borderlands 2 is that at one point the game would just throw an insane shitload of side-quests at you. 15 Quests in total, i think. So i have to visit around 8 people, get the quests, get to locations, hear that said item of quest isn't here, but in a different location. Walk back. Get item. Walk to person to finish quest. Oh what fun.

That should've been the subtitle for this game: Borderlands 2 The Backtracking.

Backtracking isn't fun. Everybody who played any Capcom games knows this. Especially the DMC Series. Which actually made me drop playing DMC4 instantly when i had to backtrack with Dante.

Another thing are unskippable tutorials or just long tutorials. Make it interesting, or don't make it at all.

Unskippable cutscenes alá opening of Mass Effect 1 are also a pain. I had to go back so many times just to get the face of my Shepard right. Total of 2 hours wasted on that. Unskippable dialogs alá Okami are also a real joy-breaker for me.

Another thing that pissed me off is what i experienced in Dragon Age: Origins. That nearly made me quit the game.

"Hi there, i really need the help of your people, we need to destroy Sauron."
"Yeah, i'd totally love to, but you see i have also a problem. Fix that for me first, then we'll see."

Great, what am i, the janitor? Fix your own shit, my problems are more important.

Also: Nearly everything about MGS4, especially characters like Naomi, who not only taught the hyper intelligent Sunny that a good housewife always has to look its best, but also just wouldn't fucking die.

@DSB: Really? That bothers you? I think that's such a small portion of the game that i wasn't bothered by it at all. I think Borderlands 2 has the same problem Borderlands 1 had: It gets boring really, really fast. The shooting just isn't fun. I don't understand why every character has only one special ability and nothing else. They should've included at least 6 abilites for one character alone, instead of just updates of one ability. Very disappointing. Because of that the characters just don't feel different.

Borderlands 2 a great game...but why the fuck are you sending me to the same place I just came from,to do something for you!?Was it not logical to give me that task when I was going there anyway?!Was it not enough that I had to kill the same fucking skags and stalkers 2 times!?As I said... a great game but this really annoyed me...

I'd say Borderlands 2 is a pretty damn good example.

I'm head over heels in love with it, but there are a lot of stupid bugs, and I think the fact that it's so good in general means that every mistake irks me all the more.

To me, they still haven't justified those vehicles. It's a seriously poor metagame in a seriously great shooter.

It's obvious to me that they understand how to make shooter gameplay gratifying. Shoot a certain part, get a certain reaction. Use a certain weapon, get a certain reaction.

And yet the vehicles just shit all over it. You just drive really fast, point in a general direction and pull the trigger until something explodes. It's routine, it's predictable, it's irrelevant. It's so counter-intuitive to what the rest of the game does.

I kinda miss the cheap shortcuts too. Some chests, like the ones in Sanctuary stay open permanently after the first time you open it. Why? To me that's a detriment to what the whole game is about - Excess!

Why have more of everything, just not chests full of fat loot? Come on now!

Also, Ethereals in UFO: Enemy Unknown. Well, really PSI in general. I get the fact that it's meant to make the late game challenging, but all it ever did was wipe out your best guys before you actually get a shot at the baddies. Zero balance there.

I hate being told how I should be having fun within a game, its one of the primary reasons I hate Achievements, thats another story though.

The best example I can give is in Borderlands 2 when you come across a completely gated area in a vehicle, forcing you out onto foot. I want to drive in there and scoot about. I want to keep my car and actually have a little fun with the guys running about while I run them over.

I have to plus one for Gad here nothing rips me out of a game experience faster then a QTE. As a general rule.

But as for a spesific game(as TG was asking for): Diablo III and the CoolDown on healing pots. Diablo II didn't have pot CDs and you could pot through a lot of things. In D3, I am all too often running around one hit from dead with a screen full of shit to avoid and my CD on my health pots is sitting at half. If I am being honest, that one single thing is why I don't play anymore. The game is too hard for me.
