this guy is full of it... consoles is doing better than ever and have a lot of creative games for it, if you look for them you will find. as i see it pc gaming is on the way out and get replaced by tablets and mobile games. the cost to make these pc games is insane and then you have the piracy, and that the pc is notorious known for.

Some interesting points and the general gist of the direction that gaming is going I agree with, but he does talk some crap too.

Impossible to get a good console title out there for < $10m? Plenty of examples say otherwise. He's also talking about creativity whilst launching a Scrabble clone, hmmmm ok.

I also think the console model is going to change and react to this shift in the industry in some substantial ways. You can even see the roots of it in current systems, Indie games and self publishing options for example. I also think you'll see a retraction in the mobile gaming explosion as over saturation really kicks in.

There are some sizeable advantages to the console systems too. Which from his fairly one sided perspective he doesn't really acknowledge.

Not effecting ninty eh?
Doesn't matter one bit to me. Businesses change all the time. As long as good games are there I am happy.

I think it's stating the obvious, although consoles are due for a makeover with the next generation.

Even so I think it's shocking that they've fallen so far behind. Using a console really feels like a time capsule.

Consoles have a lot of advantages, but they don't seem to be too focused on using any of them. I think that's what happens when you take out the competition.

I hope the same thing isn't coming to the PC with all the proprietary clients popping up everywhere.

..oh great, here goes OG again....

"Also, leaving the traditional publisher out of it, it's been great for the industry. Even with Steam and mobile, both have caused a flurry of creative activity that's great for gaming. So I think the console is the one that's the most stagnant by far. There's just very little way for that industry to change when it's locked up by the manufacturer. PC games have a pretty interesting future still. Console games will probably stick around, but you won't see as much change in the console game market. As long as the Call of Duties and the Maddens are out there and selling well, those will make up the majority of sales. And the creativity you'll see will be on Steam and mobile."

--- Ensemble Studios founder talks about his new project and how an open platform may eat Microsoft and Sony's lunch

http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2012-09-26-tony-goodman-the-publisher-as-we-know-it-may-become-extinct

Rather interesting read.
