Here's a perfect example of why there's such a long way to go to get complete parity in online gaming.

It's also a perfect example of what I've mentioned above.

I was looking at the FFA rankings, and noticed this guy towards the top with a ridiculous k/d. So I googled him up, and managed to find out exactly how he's managed to do it.

You actually have to watch it for yourself to really understand what I'm talking about.

So many one shot kills with an SMG is blatantly down to connection issues.

I should point out that IW has never actually revealed how their online system works (I wouldn't like to imagine what EA would do to get that information), so all theories and explanations of it's inner workings from anyone outside of IW (including myself and my own theories) are guess work based on personal experiences.

I should also point out that some people are just trolls, who look to make negative comments about certain pieces of software at every available opportunity, due to their own deep rooted sense of inadequacy.

As slithery as they are, they could never ask basic questions about said pieces of software without having an agenda, so it's better not to take them seriously.

I'm not expert, but from what I understand CoD doesn't have dedicated servers, a player is chosen as host each match. It's been that way since forever.

Now each CoD has handled it differently. In MW2 the host would be given a slight advantageto compensate for any extra lag they might suffer. In Blops the host would have a slight disadvantage, tough cookies, but not a game breaker. I believe the same system is used for MW3.

Now the amount of lag everyone else gets would depend on the geographical location to said host and their internet speed.

Now to compensate for your lack of speed CoD games, like other online games has a lag comp program. As I understand it, this simply levels the playing field somewhat, so's as to prevent guys with top speed internet dominating each game.

As I've said before my game was fine until patch 1.14 was put in. This was to improve the lag a few guys were getting, but for others it has exacerbated the problem. As a guy who never really noticed to much lag before, it was a rude awakening.

Dedicated servers would I suppose remove this, but the CoD system has been fine for ages, so I can only assume that IW have messed up the calculations a little.

Saying that though, it's still top of the Live playlist, so I could just be in a unfortunate minority. I'm glad I found barebones, but it is odd that this gamemode is seemingly unaffected :-/

What does fairness have to do with anything?

The game is punishing people for... playing well? I don't follow.

Whatever the case, it's still a complete farce. The game clearly isn't functioning even on a basic level, if people have to go out of their way to play it without problems.

^ Oh I understand the need for fairness. Some people have very fast internet, some don't. But some people are also better than others at the actual game, so it's frustrating when the game hamstrings your performance.

Actually, it changes from game to game.

Sometimes I'm one shot sniping people with an SMG from across the map, sometimes I start shooting before the other guy even comes around the corner, but he still gets me first.

Most of the time it's fairly balanced, though.

^ Any normal TDM, FFA, Kill Confirmed or Domination will usually go bad for me since Patch 1.14...

Anyway with your crappy Saudi connection you must be loving it! I bet your never made host, so no penalty there, plus I bet your ping is high, so you get the magical lag comp on your side... Wanker ;-)

I'm sticking to Barebones for a while. I'm a big fan of Kill Confirmed and being able to play lag free again is fucking sweet :-D

What modes do you usually play that are causing you problems?

I've actually been playing loads of Face-Off recently. The 1v1 matches are usually pretty intense, and unlike with MW2, it's not the case that 80% of the people that are playing it are trying to boost.

Anyway, as the maximum number of players that you get in there is 6, the connections are usually pretty solid. However, bear in mind that I'm in Saudi, so it might be different for me here.

The biggest problems with it, though, are that there are only 4 maps atm, and if you're playing 1v1 most people usually quit as soon as they go a few kills down.

I'm not sure if it's my connection or if the mode is designed to stop you from inviting people so that you can boost or not, but when people quit, it usually goes straight back to the lobby. Because of this, I've actually got a whole load of wins that should be on my stats, but they aren't, because when the game ends, it doesn't register.

Anyway, like I said, the 1v1s are usually pretty intense, and very, very tactical. Checking your opponents perks and choosing the right ones to counter them can be so important to how you do in the game.

This mode is actually almost like a whole new game for me.

Anyway, there are about 30 different modes to play... Is barebones the only other one you've tried? I usually enjoy S+D too. Some people don't like it because you only get one life per round, and it's a bit slow paced, but because it's so tactical, you can usually eliminate any lag advantage that people have with good positioning.

If you play this is, you may have run into Lag issues. I know I have. Long time to find a lobby, your bullets not hitting and being cut to pieces as soon as you see someone. All in all not fun.

My game got considerably worse since patch 1.14 and I know I'm not alone. I came close to quitting, but then I tried a game of Barebones just for the he'll of it.

The difference is night & day!! I was back to my old form, high killstreaks and quick to find a game. Even better your perks are active, it's only your strike package that is removed.

Theirs a theory that Barebones is not so laggy due to the game not having to compute for killstreaks flying around... My theory is that Infinity Ward figure it's not too popular, so haven't tried to *fix* it.

Either way, it's what I'll be playing till they do and I highly recommend it to any players who've had the same problems as me ;-)
