He said "We have our eye on Homeworld. I know it's one of our most loved IPs".

That's pretty general, but I do have a good feeling about Rubin.

I don't think he's at THQ just so he can be the Big Suit making all the most obvious moves. Here's hoping.

I just guerilla tweeted Jason Rubin to hear whether he would bundle the Homeworlds for a re-release.

It won't make a mountain of money for THQ, but I think it would make them look good.

For all the negative stories being run about THQ, I think they would benefit from putting a few bucks in the karma bank.

I just hope it's their property. The internet is a little unsure of it.

@DSB Oh, man, Freelancer, why the hell we can't have another Freelancer like experience. EVE is great but I want something fast and offline, EVE is just too much work only to get obliterated by the first douche-bag you come across.

Clean up on isle 5.

I just don't understand Activision, man.

1. Dig out Homeworlds
2. HD'ify Homeworlds
3. Profit

It's just that simple.

You could probably just hand it over to GOG for a small fee, and they'd make it work all by themselves.

I remember pirating the original Nexus, but I kinda let it go before I ever got through the tutorial because the camera and the interface just pissed me off.

I don't know, I'll think about it. I would fucking love another Homeworld.

And another Master of Orion.

And another Freelancer.

Until then, it's FTL.

On the topic of Activision though, gotta give 'em props for this one:

http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/spycraft_the_great_game/

Never thought I'd see that one again.

... is currently being praised through the roof all over the internets, and has 10,000 concurrent users on Steam.

10,000 concurrent users. Two indie developers. Kickstarter.

Every single major publisher would pass on a game like that.

I actually made a forum post just for Defense Grid 2. I can't believe it wasn't reported, it caught me completely by surprise too.

It seems a few sites did run stories, but I think Hidden Path could've done a much better job of getting it out there.

Awareness is really job number one.

Looks like Defense Grid 2 is going to make it by a hair, and Star Command came in with 25.000 dollars more than their final stretch goals, so I reckon we can safely say it's going to launch with full Steam Workshop integration.

That's sad because it's true.

They've really nailed me with that shit, especially since you're usually buying in a month in advance. You can always be like "Well, I don't really NEED 25 dollars a month from now...".

That's the future. Fuck it :P

I'm "only" supporting Penny Arcade and Star Command this month, so I'm slowly winding it down.

At least Takedown is going to be pitched to publishers.

Another worthy mention right here:

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1547218311/alpha-colony-a-tribute-to-mule

By the looks of things, there are some really good M.U.L.E. remakes out there, but since this is labelled a tribute and has a much larger budget, I think they might be able to go a bit further.

I don't think there's any shame in that (critical thinking, yay!) but I don't really see how anyone has promised a revolution.

It's just reviving a part of the industry that has been dead for quite a while. From adventure games to tactical shooters, the publishers have failed to provide those experiences, and making up for that is really the biggest boon I see in crowdfunding.

I think the lack of total transparency is a problem. It would be more fun if they provided people with the same financial information that you would, if you were talking to any other investor.

But I think there's still some validity to the educated guesses. You look at the studio, you look at the pitch, you weigh the options.

And it's not like you do have to burn 60 bucks a pop. 15 bucks is the skeptic's tier :P

I personally agree with most of what you said there, I Just don't think this:

"It's also why I think it's important to keep expectations low if you're gonna get into this."

Most of the time, can't be applied to a lot of gamers. That is me being rather stereotypical but I just feel people have this expectation that Kickstarter games mean unshackled developers going wild with ideas that will revolutionise the industry.

And it may well be, I don't know yet. I'm happy to admit I'm more of a selfish consumer, if I get a half decent or good game out of my backed projects, that's really what I'm happy about. But it would of course mean I will be more willing to back more projects.

I just want to see some come to fruition before I go crazy.

I don't share the idea that failures are going to sink crowdfunding.

If that's the case, then gamers have even less sense than venture capitalists, and that's saying a lot.

What could really hurt it is if people outright scam crowdfunded projects, which could very well happen since we don't have the same kind of intelligence and oversight with these companies, that you would as a potential investor. That's a weakness.

It's also why I think it's important to keep expectations low if you're gonna get into this. It's not gonna be a picture perfect thing where every game just turns out golden.

Ultimately you're paying to assume some of the risk and take some of the hassle away from developers, and allow them to develop their games in relative peace.

It would be cool if you got dividends on what is essentially a bond in a game, but I guess that's where the charity aspect comes in.

I don't have any illusion that I'm funding these amazing efforts that are gonna blow everything, ever, away. For me it's about jumping at the chance to simply give some inspired developers room to work.

I don't get dividends from the profit, I'm not assured a great experience, but ultimately I've helped to make sure that a good game can and will be made without the idiotic machinations of the publishing industry.

Actively supporting that kind of environment and potential makes me feel a lot better than I would buying a AAA product. It's worth every kind of disappointment. Unlike say, preordering RAGE.

@giskard, that's the reason I have held back from going wild on these. As much as I would like to believe all these really great innovative games will come from them, part of me thinks there will be a lot of misjudged targets that lead to bargin bin quality games.

Grim Dawn and this so far, that's the only two I have backed. Part of me just believes this will be a trend that dies out quickly and it's only going to take one hyped failure to destroy th vision.

I might consider funding a Kickstarter title after I see proof of a game released that has been funded by Kickstarter. So in a few years, then?

In my experience, the real tactical games tend to attract a lot of "nerds" on their own. You're never gonna be rid of idiots in an online game, but I think you're better off with one of these, than in a lot of other places.

I think there's gonna be a lot of focus on the singleplayer aspect though. In my opinion that's really the core of most tactical shooters. If you're playing online, then the tactical aspect falls to any random guy you meet.

If you're playing against the AI, it gives the designer the ability to create believable behaviour.

It's always going to be a gamble whether that actually turns out well though. I'm so starved for one of these that I'll take that risk any day.

Sounds interesting, but it really sounds like you need a decent group of regs to play with which makes me think I'd never really play it.
