@YZ The Undead Mod has both. Infected are fast and Zombies are slow. Zombies go for civilians or soldiers, and they become the infected. They're not as fast as Day Z though.

If you get bitten you have something like 5-10 minutes to heal yourself or you become a zombie.

http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=9207

It's not really as advanced as Day Z. They're doing some pretty cool stuff with the persistency and exploration.

If they replaced the runners from Day Z with the zombies from the Undead Mod you'd have exactly what I wanted :P

(But again, once you exceed 100 AI on the map, the engine kinda starts stealing their brains, pun intended)

@DSB: You should definitely look for alternative zombie mods. I could swear i was looking through Gameplay footage of Day Z when i found a few videos of slow-walking zombies. Guess that was a different mod, but there was no name and nothing in the description.

Sure, but thats not really addressing any of the engines limitations. That's always been the biggest frustration when it comes to the OFP series. It really doesn't give people a lot to work with, and most of the advanced things you want to do, will be done in spite of that engine.

Usually fighting it every step of the way.

As far as I know the mod is lead by a Bohemia developer, so I would expect him to be quite the star of the house at the moment :P

Well, there is hope as BI are helping out, as stated on Kotaku/dayz:
"There's no doubt that the thrilling Day Z mod currently drives Arma 2 Combined Operations sales on Steam", he says with a touch of understatement. "Sales have increased almost fivefold from how they were before Day Z's Alpha release!"

"That said, we have always been proud to provide a PC exclusive type of game like Arma 2, with a strong emphasis on modding and the user community."

Asked whether the mod's success could lead to Bohemia Interactive actually lending a helping hand (the mod's creator is currently a little overwhelmed by the response), Španěl says that the developer is actually accommodating DayZ in ArmA II's next update.

"Bohemia Interactive has always tried to help community mod makers in many different ways and Day Z mod is no different", he says. "We're more than happy to assist DayZ in any suitable way and considering the mod's popularity we are committed to do some related work in the next Arma 2 update (1.61)."

"We are actively communicating about how we could best support the Arma 2 user community especially in multiplayer and Day Z players are right now a significant portion of people actively playing the game, so of course it's high on our priority list to support it the best we can. It's important to understand that DayZ was released just a few weeks ago as a tech demo/proof of concept and it's still at Alpha status so until we know where the project intends to go it's hard to commit to anything specifically."

My first game was during the night. All I saw to begin with was a completely black screen, no moon or anything.

That was very cool.

I think it's kinda ruined the first time you get a runner though. As long as the zombies are hopping, everything looks fine, but the runners just don't work.

The engine and animations just don't support it, and personally I think zombie virus plus superhuman speed is a bit of a bad habit. In this case it doesn't make for very interesting gameplay.

I was elated to find an M4A1 and 3 full clips for it. Though I stupidly didn't manage my ammo and burnt all 3 clips just escaping from where I found it. Now I have no bullets and a flashlight with no batteries as my backup!

Had my first little go on this tonight.

Reminded me alot of playing the Alpha version of Minecraft for some reason, broken and a little bit dodgy but very special.

Then I got chewed.

It's pretty amazing what a zombie mod can do for a game though. Bohemia are making a lot of money on this.

I've managed to dive in myself, and it's alright. It's a great idea, but I think it's pretty obvious that the engine can't really support the ambition.

I've been doing editing since OFP, and the engine has only gotten worse at supporting large number of AI, and that's what this mod needs.

Fast, glitchy-looking zombies just aren't impressive, or very fun to fight against. What would make this amazing would be humongous hordes of slow-to-moderate speed zombies, like the ones in The Walking Dead.

It would be amazing if you could face a real horde, and I've wondered why no one has tried to make a Minecraft style game like that (like a 3D FPS Project Zomboid) but I don't see how this engine will ever accomodate it.

Whoever makes that game in an engine that can, is going to be insanely rich.

This is part 3 from a nice journey: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=54pbaLNLTlA&feature=youtube_gdata_player

Oh, check out the thumbs up vs. down btw.
Edit: you need to see the journey as a whole, to understand the loss of a member and the pain of having no ammo left and running away from zombie hordes for minutes, bleeding your ass of in hope you can make it for another few hours ...

Kotaku ran a story about it and then there is this awesome comment, or should I say shortstory, from a player, which was so intriguing, it actually makes me thinking of installing bootcamp, Win7 and Arma2 on one of my MacPros .... The Arma realism behind all this Zombie stuff is very hot, imo.

I spent 20 mins watching a Youtube video of it the other day, it looked quite cool although very much on the rough side.

I'm not really interested in ARMA2 at this late stage tbh, but apparently the creators have plans to port it to ARMA3 when that's released and I might pick that up. Hopefully by the time they get it ported it'll be a tidier experience.

I do think a slow paced open world zombie survival game could be cool, but I can't see any big pub backing such a project, because slow paced doesn't sell any more.

I'm not really in the know, but I've seen that a whole lot of people have been playing the Day Z mod for ArmA 2 very recently, and suddenly ArmA 2 pops back up on Steams top sellers.
