I got Soul Calibur :L I'm surprised this is still going. Ahh well. My logic was that recently games have been very RPG focused and with ME3 coming out, I needed to attain a perfect save through ME1 and 2. Soul Calibur has allowed me to do this. Thanks for the replies though ^^

Soul Calibre is more if the same and KoA is more of the same. Wait a month and get both for half the price, for double the amount of sameness.

Probably a bit late with this one. Given you'll be getting the other a month later I'd say get SCV as it would compliment ME3 better. Disagree with TheWulf on Amalur too.

@stretch215
Both OG and TheWulf are regular posters and both go for the fairly hefty sized posts too :D. So they would have some knowledge of the gaming habits of the other. I think you probably read OGs advice the wrong way too. He wasn't having a go, he was offering some advice which has helped him.

I must say I'm with the wulf on this one. I had to FORCE my self to continue to play it, hoping that it would get "better?". I just find the game boring and quite uninspiring, and the cartoonish art style doesn't help any. Of course that's just my opinion , but I'm SO glad I only rented amalur.

For me, KoA:R by a long shot.

The story may not be the most original, but then again, neither was Skyrim. The combat is fun, the world is interesting, and the graphics appealing. I'm having a blast with it, and I'm an RPG nut, and have played every RPG of note from Baldur's Gate and onwards.

So I recommend Amalur.

Trying to compare value from a fighter and a RPG is like apples and oranges. There are gamers that would play a fighter for hundreds of hours. Just like there are gamers that would play a RPG for hundreds of hours, even replaying the game with different chars, making different choices just to see what happens.

But, Wulf, when you call Amalur generic, yet make no mention of how generic a fighter can be? Thats silly.

Plus just because you don't like a game, doesn't mean that you can project that on someone else. Its ok to say "I" would pick Amalur over SC. Its ok to say "I" like this game or that because of this or that reason. But you lose points when you say ""if you buy Amalur, you'll be bored within five hours and you'll be kicking yourself over your decision".

Nothing wrong with giving an opinion. But everyone is different and has different tastes. Your one of those people that seem to hate Amalur, just to hate it. Most of the reasons you mentioned are very common place in almost any action rpg game of its type.

You have a real issue with what your calling generic. I think you need to move on. The entire media industry is a collection of generic ideas that have been "inspired" from things that came before it. Thats is esp true in games. I can't think of one game that didn't borrow something from a previous game.

I think you have generation fatigue. I know I get a case of it from time to time. So many franchise games. Sequels, prequels. Reboots. Creativity seems a casuality on todays game store shelf. We are drowning in "Mr too" games. In OMP shooters. Everything today has to have DLC, very little of it is couch co-op. Wanna play with friends? Then all of your friends need their own system, service, account, and copy of the game. Plus they use DLC as a way of making even more money while pitching the "keeping up with the Jones's" type thing.

I can think of a lot of reasons to rant on and on about the industry today. But generic game cliche's aren't one of em. Not if the game is done right. Just because I can name 20 online shooters, doesn't mean i can't enjoy playing one(BF3/Starhawk beta). Just because Skyrim sold a ton of copies doesn't mean i can't enjoy a game that does what Skyrim does, only better. If you want to only play new original games, you would have run out of a steady stream of new games some time durring the 1970s/1980s.

Maybe its time to put the controler down for a bit. I think most of us have gone through that phase a few times. Because coming here and lighting it up about how much you dislike generic games is only going to get you disliked. Just saying man, maybe its time for a breather.

The thing with amalur is that really hooks you after 15 hours of gameplay then is when it really shines, in all aspects.

In all honesty? I'd say Soul Calibur V.

There have been countless threads around the Internet about how the combat is just a very bad version of God of War - it's basic, repetitive, and clunky. So, if you strip away the combat, what do you have left?

I have played Amalur and let me say this... just let me say it...

In ALL MY YEARS of playing RPGs, I have never, ever come across a setting as generic as Amalur. Wizardry? Might & Magic? Endless D&D licensed games? Nothing... nothing comes close to how obnoxiously borrowed Amalur feels. Oh, it has rune stones! Like the Guardian Stones of Skyrim, you mean? Oh, look, it has races named Gegakkadig and Lwywywynalym! Well, yes, except they're just humans, nords, elves, and dryads.

And the setting itself is just so, so, so dull. I mean, I think Menzoberranzan was less dull than this. I think you'd be less bored playing the original Bard's Tale. This game is DULL. It's creatively bankrupt and completely devoid of any imagination. I could only stomach a few hours of it before I had to stop playing.

It is THE most generic thing I've ever played. Ever. It is condensed boredom. And it's this with a clumsy, watered down God of War style combat system. It has no style, the aesthetics it has are borrowed from other games, and it has no identity of its own. If this game were a person, they'd be named Ned, they'd be from accounting, and their favourite hobby would be organising their bloody sock drawer.

I have never, never been so bored when playing an RPG. An MMO, yes. Yes, sure. I've felt this bored when playing an MMO because some MMOs put me to sleep... but this is like a single-player MMO. You take quests, you grind through cut & paste content, and then you just go looking for more quests to grind. It feels completely and utterly devoid of purpose.

I don't know why it exists.

I mean, I had problems with Skyrim (I was sick of how killing people was often the only solution to a problem, as opposed to dialogue or other methods, when compared to games like New Vegas), but Amalur? Gods damn... Amalur has made me appreciate Skyrim.

At least with Soul Calibur V you have a game with identity, visual style, and smooth combat. I promise you, if you buy Amalur, you'll be bored within five hours and you'll be kicking yourself over your decision. And it seems I'm the only one brave enough to speak out against an AAA game around these parts - so here I am.

Amalur is just generic trash, clumsy, and fairly terrible.

And again, I can't get over just HOW generic it is.

I might have expected something ALMOST this bad in the '80s or '90s, in the age of licensed D&D games, when you'd have thousands of first person RPGs trying to recapture the success of games like Eye of the Beholder. But these days? This is just plain awful.

---

Let me put it THIS way: Compared to Amalur, the original Everquest (before the more interesting expansion packs) was a creative powerhouse of imagination and ideas.

Like I said, I just... I'm amazed at the low standards people have.

If this was a book, you'd burn it.

Amular, hands down.

SC is just another fighter. After UMVC3 and MK, the last thing I need is another fighter. Plus online fighting stinks unless your one of those select few that can pull off moves in your sleep.

Fighters are great budget/second hand pick ups. There just isn't a lot of value for the dollor with them. IMO, of course. If I could only buy one game a month, I would ask myself, what game can offer me a months worth of value. I wouldn't get the kind of hours from a fighter to make it worth that kind of value. I'd wait till spring and pick up SC for half to cash.

The original Fable is currently on Steam... And it's pretty great even now.

I would have said Amalur to buy and SC to rent.

Although DSB raises a good point and The Darkness II could be the dark horse. Again though, probably a rent on that one if not a buy.

Depends on the time you have, Kingdoms is a HUGE game, like Skyrim in that it's hundred of hours to see and do everything. Soul Calibur V won't have near that amount of time to invest. I'd probably go Soul Calibur first as you can finish it before Mass effect 3, and then after you finish ME3, you can play kingdoms. I have the same problem, I still have alot of Skyrim to finish yet, then Darkness 2 comes out, then Mass effect 3, maybe Diablo 3, and Im not sure how to fit in Kingdoms, though I do want the game.
I think Kingdoms has Mass effect unlockables though, not just in the demo

I will say Kingdoms of amalur, just to support new developers, also consider that you have a free DLC if you pre order the tittle, is like seven missions add-on included for free, but basecally just to support a new tittle, i mean a new ip by a new developer, those together dont come very often in the current state of this industry, but soul calibur five is not a bad choice and good if you get it, but this franchise can afford if you wait for it, at least it has an strong fanbase, unlike Amalur

I currently has a slight problem. I can chose between SCV or KoA:R, but I con only chose one >.< I would pick them both up but I only wish to buy two games at the minute and Mass Effect 3 is too good to pass up.

Whichever game I do not get, I can get in April. So this might be based around which games price may reduce the most by April (obviously predictions).

I have had a lot of fun with the Soul Calibur series, and really though SCIV was a good game, but then I tried the demo of Amalur and it felt like I was playing Fable again (the best one, so the first).

I really cannot decide between these two games. Opinions please, anyone?
