Eh. That's a bit typical.

I'm just not a fan of Origin because of how EA treat their customers, there's a difference in approach between EA and Valve. The attitude of Valve is that people are more willing to buy your products if you provide a professional service, which is as friendly as possible. The attitude of EA is pretty much that we're all walking wallets.

I don't blame EA for this, they are a megacorp of a publisher after all. It's their nature. But it just means that I'm not at all inclined to buy from them. Their shenanigans in banning people and blocking them from their games and things like that are things that would never happen on Steam. In fact, this is the precise reason that Valve separated the Steam forums from the Steam service (they use separate accounts).

I am also sore that they used the name of one of my all time favourite developers, the developers of Ultima and Wing Commander whom I so dearly loved those years ago, and plopped it atop their service in such an unceremonial way, like they just didn't give a shit. That has to hurt for all the people who used to work at Origin Systems, that their company name is now being used for this thing, just because EA happened to own it.

It just has to suck for them.

I don't know, there are things about EA that just say that currently they're not into treating anyone with respect, they just want to make money. And that's FINE. But when I have the choice of buying from Valve, or buying from EA? It's Valve, every time, without a second thought.

Here's what the top of my Origin Library looks: https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-ZeXwVt7ZOEg/Txhj3iOPxDI/AAAAAAAABNs/DLp8C0-ej7U/s675/BF3-%252520Origin%252520snip.PNG

:p

For some reason Magic The Gathering Duels of the Planeswalkers no longer has an icon in my Steam library (it definitely used to) and they no longer appear to sell the version I have. Holy crap there is over £30 worth of dlc for the 2012 edition.

Quake Wars: Enemy Territory, Crysis 2, King Arthur Collection (Waste of money), Scoregasm and The Ship Tutorial also don't have proper cards in grid view.

I agree those gamecards look pretty great, but I personally haven't noticed until you mentioned it, except with manually added shortcuts :P

In terms of Team Fortress 2 and Counter-Strike: Source, you could go two ways. Either make a gamecard that very clearly says beta, or keep the small icons so people don't mistake it for the actual game. Betas are usually only interesting for the most dedicated few I reckon.

I guess it would be a lot more appropriate to keep them under "Tools". It might not be on everybody's radar, but the people who had a genuine interest in it would still find it.

In terms of the Origin gamecards, the only difference between the Beta and the release is a little orange stamp in the upper left corner :P

You're right, grid view is probably the least efficient way to get around your collection, but I do like to just oggle at all the pretty icons every now and then :D

I had a good set of categories once upon a time, then I reinstalled windows and discovered the categorisation was a local setting and not saved to your account. After that I never bothered rebuilding, although I suppose if you could find the config file that governs that stuff you could back it up with everything else.

I have never really played with Origin cus it's basically my BF3 engine. I have a few other games on there but most of them are retail and steam keys I fired into Origin on a "because I can"basis :p

Nope, I've done several betas through Steam but I've never had one fail to automatically disappear.

I only own two games on Origin (BF3 and The Saboteur) so it's fairly noticeable.

*Update*

Actually, now that I just looked at my list without the "Installed" filter, I've got them too! Of course both are actually running betas as far as I can tell, whereas the BF3 beta is listed as closed.

Personally I only use the "Details View" (the others look like timewasters to me) and I have so many games that unless I want to spend time favouriting all the ones I'm currently playing, it's a lot easier to just set the filter to "Installed".

Do the same in Origin, and it forgets as soon as you restart the client. It's the do-it-yourself system :p

DSB, know any tricks for getting TF2 Beta and CSS beta out of my Steam Library? :p

tbh, those annoy me more than having the BF3 Alpha and Beta stuck in my Origin library, cus the TF2 and CSS betas fugly up my library in grid view with their shitty icons in a way in which the extraneous BF3 entries in Origin do not.

Had to go to the Steam forum to find out:

http://forums.steamgames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2172567

You have to do everything yourself with Origin. Whether it's editing an XML, going through an installer at every update (at which point the Beta pops up yet again) or uninstalling a game through the ol' Add/Remove Programs.

It's really less of a client and more of an annoying storefront.

Tongue firmly in cheek, gentlemen ;)

It's kinda symptomatic for Origin though. If I want to see the actual price, it involves finding it myself. A bit like if you want the BF3 beta deleted from your Games Library.

You have to find the XML that controls it and hide it manually. I actually had to go to the Steam forum for that solution, and that pretty much says it all.

Isn't EA supposed to be rich enough to provide basic features like that?

Origin is so evil, that when it has a sale, it actually raises prices:

http://i43.tinypic.com/302ovo9.png

That's saying nothing for the lousy machine translation.

It says "Only Now" rather than "Now Only". Really guys? I actually checked, and even Google Translate can do a better job than that. You couldn't have an intern run your shit through Google translate?
