yes fable III was disappointing too. i loved fable. i really liked fable II as well though...III was just wasting time. i hope they will come up with something good again!

i forgot another one: LOST PLANET 2...i loved the original lp. it had flaws and all. still i loved the artdesign. the akrids and snowpirates and i enjoyed the hell out of the mp...they totally messed it up with 2. not only because they made it a coop game where the coop wasnt really working, but they made some gameplay and artdesign changes that totally messed it up. it is a shame really. lp1 had so much potential it could´ve become a new killerapp from capcom...now. i don´t know.

Huh, when I read the title of this thread, I somehow thought it was the most disappointing game of 2011... If it's all time, then my other choices are...

Fable 2. I actually repurchased a 360 for this, so fond were my memories of Fable... Got to the imprisonment section and lost the will to carry on. It was more shopkeeper sim than anything else

I think there are probably 2 factors that lead to gaming disappointment more than anything else. One is hype, because even if your gameplay is a steaming pile of crap you've still got to hype the shit out of whatever you consider to be the selling point of your game and try your best to gloss over how your selling point doesn't work as well as you'd hoped, or the fact that other turd splattered aspects of your game reduce it to irrelevance.

TFU hyped up its physics engine completely ignoring the fact that the games controls and targeting system were so clunky you could cry.

Brink made a big show of their classes and movement system without revealing that their cramped corridor style map design didn't really lend to epic parkour movement around the battle field, or should that be battledor? That's without mentioning the fact that the game was am unfinished broken mess at launch that took half a year to fix.

The other thing is sequelising a much loved title and being unable to live up to the glory of the first game. That definitely happened with Bioshock 2 and to a lesser extent Crysis 2.

I thought of another game for my list, FFXIII. Honestly, at times I wonder if I could just rubber band the left stick up and tape down the X button, would the game compete itself without any further human input? Because 10 hours in I don't feel like I've done anything else and the thought of playing the game again is depressing

I'm with freedoms_stain on Far Cry 2. Reading the previews, everything sounded extremely exciting with bushfires and factions and all that, but in reality it was a shooting gallery so basic it made CoD look like chess.

And I just realized probably up there with BRINK as my most disappointing game...probably so disappointing I blocked it out of memory is Dragon Age II...where Bioware basically said, "Hey it worked for Mass Effect 2...let's try it on a fantasy RPG"...and they failed miserably, haven't even been able to bring myself to finish the game, haven't even booted it up since March...and not sure if I ever will after pre-ordering the Signature Edition last January even after saying WTF @ the first screen shots, and again saying WTF after playing the demo...totally screwed that whole franchise up, and now with Skyrim I don't even see a point of wasting 20-60 hrs on Dragon Age II...an immense step down from Origins

By far, the most disappointing game for me was...Skyrim

No, that's a total joke...love Skyrim

I will keep it with games released this past year as was the initial intention of the post I believe...

BRINK was definitely the most disappointing game for me...just had so much potential, similar to APB in 2010 which is probably my most disappointing game of all time...

Homefront was also disappointing...for all the supposed Half Life influenced immersion and Call of Duty killer combat...it fell really short...basically wasn't even a AAA game imo

RAGE...and I haven't even finished it yet...thought it was going to be so much deeper than it is...and the graphics don't even look that great for something that was supposed to be such a great looking game...combat is not very good either...id needs to pull their heads out of their asses and get back in this decade...basically seems like they got caught somewhere between Fallout and Borderlands and decided to eliminate any depth or loot from it

And finally...MW3...even though I blame myself for falling prey to the pressure of all my friends getting it and convincing myself it would be something new...when I first played it, I wondered why I paid full price for a game I bought two years ago (MW2)...but in the end it wasn't that disappointing since I knew all it was gonna be was an MW2 clone so I got what I deserved for buying it...still a good game just nothing new about it

And on a good note...by far, my biggest surprise of the year was Portal 2...one of the best games I've played in a long time...if anyone hasn't tried it yet, go get yourself a copy...just stunning

Dead Island also gets an honorable mention for both being surprisingly in depth but disappointing for not living up to the hype of that awesome slow mo reverse trailer

Off the top..

- Alone In the Dark the New Nightmare (shockingly crappy sequel to the game which pioneered the genre, all around poor: easy, short, and dull),

- Final Fantasy IX and X (both games devoid of any value, even by late FF watered down standards; FF VIII was already half arsed but at least I had to mess around with the Junction system)

- Every post 2001 Ubisoft platformer from Sands of Time to Ass Creed, and everything they spawned (sticky jumps - singlehandedly killed any drive for being better at these games)

- All those Atlus' post SMT III Nocturne spin-offs (Digital Devil Sagas, recent Personas), after what was one of the most refreshing and cool jrpgs ever made they went back to nauseating jap grindfests

i was disappointed by a lot of games. some i found still enjoyable but others made me puke.
l.a. noire was mediocore. i didn´t expect it to be good so i was only slightly disappointed.
same goes to crysis 2. sp was kind of enjoable, mp was awful.
alan wake i enjoyed but wasn´t blown away.

brink totally disappointed me because i thought it had huge potential and the artdesign was great.
mw3 and bf3 are both extremeley disappointing with mw3 being the king of the trashhill. i can´t believe the good scores for mw 3 after i played it yesterday...it is bad. lazy development. the mp map design is a joke. seriously. everything is flat and boring. i cannot believe how people are able to enjoy it. cod 4 and black ops is where it´s at in mp imho. black ops wasn´t that bad, at least they tried to make minor innovations, like the wager matches etc. i also loved some of the maps in the game, some of the blops maps belong to the very best of the series imo. if mw3 really is the 9/10 of gaming we are screwed big time.
i loved bfbc2. it was a dumped down bf2 and i loved it. it was more arcadish and it had a slick clean design. it wasn´t flawless but overall a great game. in bf3 there are some design choices that totally ruined it for me. it´s a shame really.
Deus EX was boring too...
bioshock was great, bs2 was BS.
Rage i haven´t played but i was sceptical about this one anyway. after i´ve played the demo i knew it wouldn´t be that great.
iwas totally overwhelmed by skyrim but now, after i finished the main quests, reached level 36ish i got really bored with it. i wont complain because i´ve spent some serious amont of time in it and enjoyed it but i am not sure naymore if it deserves to be a goty.
the best game this gen to me still is halo reach. theres so much love in it. everything is just right. the half life orange box was great too.
gears 3 was great - this game surprised me. the dlc sucked ass though. halo cea was a great game for a nice price. the anniversary mp maps are just awesome fun. halo 3 and odst were great too of course. and eventhough i don´t own a ps3 anymore i am pretty sure that resistance 3 would´ve been a game i would´ve loved to play since i loved the first 2. great franchise.
overall there have been great games but A LOT of lazy stuff too...
there is probably much more to say about this and the list of games could be much longer if you would really think about it. overall i am truly sceptical about every new release and check if i will buy a game or not. i just don´t want to waste my time and money.

This year BRINK is the obvious choice, and yeah I have expressed my bitterness over the game on vg247 multiple times in the past. Ridiculously unfinished game, utter disappointment.

Crysis 2, I liked the start, I was enjoying the game until I realised there was not going to be anything other than a chain of connected "arenas" where you're clearly supposed to observe the patterns and systematically stealth kill everything in sight until you're either through or get caught, at which point it's standard shooter territory. I clearly remember getting to the end, and not realising it was the end because I couldn't believe that this was everything the game was. I think I was still waiting for the rest of the game after the credits rolled.

I got some cheapo aero-fighter game off Steam called Dogfighter that proved to be somewhat of a broken pile o' crap last year.

I got a 360 pretty late in the game so I lovefilm'd up and rented a lot of games, a large portion of these were stinkers:

Far Cry 2 - the main thing I hated was the security outposts every 20m and the fact that the entire outpost respawned amazingly fast. Getting anywhere became a chore because despite the fact that the maps were huge, most of it was mountain that was either completely impassable or impassable to vehicles, and even using the quick travel system you'd be guarantee'd encounters with at least 1 if not multiple outposts. The game became a planning game of outpost encounter minimisation.

Dark Void - it was just not a very well thought out TPS which failed to make its selling point - the jet pack - any fun.

The Force Unleashed - my mate told me this game was bad, I rented it anyway, he was right. At the time I was a bit of an achievement ho, but I couldn't face a 2nd run at that game to mop up missed achievements.

Probably all of the PS2 LoK games, Defiance was ok, but I always felt they took the series in the wrong direction after Soul Reaver.]

That's all that's rolling off the top of my head, no doubt there are more.

alan wake. annoying combat, so annoying that i couldnt enjoy the rest of the game, which was pretty good.
crysis2. most generic FPS ive ever played. couldnt even finish it.
god of war3. nice visuals, boring combat, unloveable character, no story.
crackdown2. played for 10 minutes, that was more than enough...

The Prince of Persia that was cell shaded, well, I can honestly say I've never been hurt by a game developer so much, the PoP trilogy on PS2 was amazing, it was the most fun I can remember especially the last one. Uncharted kind game me that PoP platforming so uncharted is my new favorite, plus Tomb Raider is wank, nothing beats the PS1 days.

I think there was probably a few bad games I bought back in PS2 days, but I was a teenager who didn't really research what games were worth buying. Nowadays I buy games on Steam and buy 2nd hand games for PS3 for cheap with the odd new games such as Portal 2, Infamous 2, Uncharted 3.

Oh Red Faction Guerrilla, but only because I was dumb enough to pre-order on steam for £35 only for it to be included in the THQ pack that Christmas for about £30.

Oooohh lemme join in!

BlazBlue: Continuum Shift (X360)
Not because its a bad game. I just know that under different circumstances, at a different time I would have loved that game. A man can only take so much of "You Lose!" in one lifetime.
It was, and is, the one and only fighting game I have ever played/bought. Ha d some money lying around and after buying it I then read some reviews (stupid of me, I know) and found out that people think its the hardest fighting game for newbies O_O
I wish I played SF or something first to get a feel for it. Playing online is absolutely crazy, once someone starts a combo it never stops, and when watching people player (via the Spectator mode) the game looks so fun. Once control is handed over to me, all that you can see over the smoke of the controller is the "You Lose!"
I know that these kinda games takes time (a lot of time) to develop the required skill to play it at a decent level, but I just wish I was eased into it better. Don't make any mistake, the tutorial section of the game is excellent but this is one of the few games in my life where I have to admit defeat.
I will still try, in hope now not expectation, to become better at it. What I tend to find with me is that if something is REALLY hard for me, I fail 99 times, leave it for a select period of time, come back to it then boom. Mastered.

Crysis 2 (PC)
I tried the game out. What a let down. The storymode wasn't good enough and I wasn't even sucked into the hype of Richard Morgan (believe me, after the tripe that was MW2, I now declare myself immune to hype). The online play was poor, and I remember that the game didn't even release with DirectX 11. I know that's not very important in terms of how the game was played, but one must understand that with what Crysis 2 was attempting to achieve, that shouldn't have happened.

And... that's all I can think of right now. It takes me a lot of time to decide what game to buy, limited funds and all that, and Blazblue was an "impulse purchase". That being said, if I was offered any BlazBlue game I would still snatch that up haha

Star Wars The Force Unleashed 2...after finishing it all I could do was http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WWaLxFIVX1s&feature=player_embedded.
New Medal of Honor(the one that came out two years ago)...the shortest single player campaign of all time!
Rage....the title of the game is quite appropriate!I don't know what made ME rage more:textures out of place, things in the world out of place, the world seemed so static that it looked like a giant somewhat pretty post card and the ending was...AWFUL!

RAGE was a huge disappointment, but there were quite a few of those over the last year. I felt like an idiot for buying it, because the only reason was basically the reputation of the developer. So I consider that more of a personal failure than that of the developers. I wasn't that impressed by the previews. Gut feeling, I'm sorry, I won't ignore you ever again.

Brink should've been one of the best games of the year. Instead it was just a poorly designed mess, and easily the worst game by Splash Damage yet.

I bought Crysis 2 because I loved the multiplayer demo, only to find that they completely fucked it up by hiring Gamespy of all providers to handle their accounts. Predictable disaster? Yes. And much worse for all the bragging they did leading up to release.

I didn't actually buy LA Noire, it was a gift, but I did find it very underwhelming. Who cares about facial features when all the women in the game look like they were born and bred in the Uncanny Valley?

Then you had Deus Ex:HR. It was disappointing on three counts: Terrible writing, the fact that it could've been a great game, and that people seemed to buy the hype more than the game itself.

BF3 was actually one of my biggest surprises. I guess I had much the opposite experience of AHA-Lambda. I was pretty disappointed in all the start-up troubles, the battlelog and network features felt half-finished, if that, and I'm pretty sure they rushed it way too hard, but I felt like it was a huge step forward from the mediocrity that was BC2, even if the bragging, once again, makes it's flaws all the more glaring.

My biggest disappointment of all time is easily Mass Effect 2. If I had realized that they were gonna completely reboot the series as a generic Ubisoft third person shooter with a laughable plot, there's no way I would've bothered. Most of my friends who got it didn't even finish it. I finished it, only to regret I did. I'm still trying to forget, so I can enjoy the original for what it was.

Rage... Even as just a shooter it was dull. Their was no sense of excitement or discovery. Just drive through a bland environment and shoot some guys, then drive back. It could have done with some really epic set pieces and memorable characters...

Lets hope id get the magic back for Doom 4 eh?

RAGE. In retrospect, I was utterly disappointed. Still have two more missions to go and I just can't be bothered to finish it off.

Assassin's Creed II. I missed the boat on the original, but last year I finally picked it up on the cheap and after about three hours of TRYING to like it, I just couldn't go on. Really boring and pointless game for me. I've played a few other parkour style games that really felt fast smooth and intuitive, but AC II just made me want to put the controller every 5 minutes. Which I finally did. Forever.

BRINK-don't think ive ever been so dissapointed at a game in my life

bulletstorm-was just so repetitive i found myself just sliding, kicking, shooting, kicking, kicking and shooting

LA- just borining

crysis 2- same reasons as you

battlefield 3- DICE just fed the cod noobs with over-powered snipers

As a follow on to my comments from the crysis 2 article I was just wondering what everyone here's most disappointing games where? We keep seeing GOTY lists everywhere so why not see the other side of the coin? :P

Personally, my most disappointing game was battlefield 3.
Idk why but BC2 multiplayer to me was just much more fun and enjoyable, couple this with the rote co-op mode and ATROCIOUS campaign, well yeah...
(if you told me at the start of the year I'd enjoy MW3 much more than bf3 I'd have called you crazy :P)

Other games I regret buying:
LA Noire - enjoyable but once I finished it I just knew I would never touch it again, so it was promptly traded (also to me the flaws of the game became much greater in retrospect, quite like heavy rain).
Crysis 2 - just a very bland by the numbers fps =/

Anyone else want to chip in their feelings?
