When it comes to cosmetics and characteristics for my characters I often like to visit all ends of the spectrum. A lot of my ideas about characters are influenced by books too. I tend to read a lot of fantasy and sci-fi, so it’s quite easy for me to create backstories for different role/class archetypes.

My "paragon" minded characters tend to be, in my mind at least, shield using burly warriors and if possible have some sort of paladin/holy magic to boot. If anyone has read the Coldfire trilogy by Celia Friedman, the character of Damien Vryce is very much like my ideal hero warrior type.

On the other side of the fence, I like the idea that magic wielders are more susceptible to the “dark side” and so I tend to imagine them as fallen heroes or people who were wronged and took the wrong paths, and well beyond redemption.

Then finally, my favourite ideas are anti-heroes/villains. The ones who are mostly either good or bad but have a streak of the opposite in there too. Like a barbarian type who is generally out to do good, but far from squeamish about brutally destroying his enemies and stealing as long as no one finds out about it. The kind of person who won’t think twice about killing someone who has wronged them. Very much Riddick-esque or perhaps, again book inspired, a lot like Logen Ninefingers from The First Law trilogy by Joe Abercrombie. Or again, the other side of the coin, the villain who will kill, murder and pillage but occasionally lets his conscience slip in and show some act of mercy. Very much like a character from the same trilogy mentioned earlier, the Coldfire trilogy, a character called Gerald Tarrent.

I would also recommend all of the above mentioned trilogies if you’re into fantasy reading. They’re not as popular but similar to the Farseer Trilogy by Robin Hobb.

it's been a while.. but that's how I recall it working ; p

Again, things might be different with Dark.

It really doesn't make a huge difference either way. I'm just a perfectionist swine.

The main factor guiding my decision of starting class is that I don't want points on attributes that I won't be using.

Seeing as the amount of souls it takes to add stats increases with your soul level, I'd rather start with souls level 0, and put each point exactly where I want it. Of course they all merge at a point, but I may not want to increase certain stats at all, so I'll choose the most suited stat arrangement from the start.

I had a few instances in Demon's where a path opened itself due to the world alignment. I didn't really play for it, but I remember on the very first level where you run across the bridge, the pathway down on the left that was always closed suddenly became open one day. I think it's because I'd killed a couple of the dragons without dying.. not sure. There were only a few instances where I noticed a change though. I'll be glad if they've left this out of Dark. Seemed too complex a system for most people (myself included) to fully grasp.

No backstory here.. but I'm very fussy when it comes to aesthetics.
My character won't be seen wearing armor or using a weapon I don't consider to be pretty fucking cool.

@ Freedom

Wow, so your Character has now been on a huge amount of adventures i bet! :)

I was thinking of trying something like that with Dark Souls and Skyrim. As i want to play both this will also help me not have to remeber too much while jumping between the two games! ;) So i think it will have to be a Vampire Hunter Character for both.

Or maybe a Dhampir, Vampire Hunter D anyone?!

@ Viralshag

Same here, i have over 60 hours in Demon Souls now and my world tendency is always white?!

I think they have taken it out of Dark Souls, it was intresting although it never seemed to have any effect for me either.

One thing I never really could wrap my head around was the black vs white server thing that affected the world. Mine just always seemed to be the same so I wrote it off as something I will never get or be bothered about.

When I started playing Demon's Souls the other night I have to confess I picked my starting class based mostly on their appearance as the stat numbers really meant nothing to me without knowing much about how the game works.

To answer monkeygourmet, I don't so much have a back story for my characters so much as have the same character in every RPG I play. I don't really remember when I started doing this, but if there's character creation in a game then I will create a red headed female named Tessa as my first character.

I generally favour light classes and often primarily use bows and if possible plug some exp into restoration/healing to avoid the need to keep high levels of healing items in inventory. In Demon's Souls I went with Wanderer just because the numbers seemed fairly average, and it had a Soul Level which some other candidate classes didn't, dunno what a soul level is but figured it was probably useful to have.

Yeah, classes only really matter in the beginning. If you know how you want to play choose the class that suits your style. Saves time and effort. If you want to start with a neutral character take the Deprived.

http://darksouls.wikidot.com/classes

Magic is apparently not as powerful as it was in DS.

@Gekademi

I think your class makes more of a difference at the start of the game and then they all kind of merge into one. I think Dark Souls is similar to this.

I also like to think of a backstory for my build! Especially as Demon/Dark Souls drip feeds you the plot!

Last time it was my Blessed Priest build Vs. the Demons, very Dante's Inferno!

This time im thinking of a Vampire/Demon hunter build using the Pyromancer as a base. Hopefully there will be a cursed Weapon and Armour set to use with this.

Anyone else sad enough to create a backstory for your character?! ;)

Are classes actually important this time? In Demons i picked the thief (or whatever its called) and at one point pretty much just started putting points in strength to use heavy weapons, then again later on i put points into magic so i could use spells. The notion of class in Demons really didnt mean much in the end. Is it any different in Dark?

Oh and its magic more balanced this time or can it blast through anything like in Demons?

I was leaning toward the Pyromancer too. After ploughing through a lot of Demon's with a melee-focussed build, it took me a while to realise the potential of magic.

I know they've changed things up a bit for Dark, but I definitely want to have some strong spells to fall back on. I'll go out of my way to find a nice weapon, ideally linked to my magic or faith stat.

I'm intrigued by the little trinket you get to choose at the start too. And think I'll be taking the Master Key for my first char.

I know I'm going to get 10 or 20 hours in only to re-roll.. so the first character will probably be a throw-away.

For a laugh, as usual, I will start off as the deprived class. No doubt when the funny side of the that wears off I will start my serious character. Right now after reading through the descriptions I'm leaning towards the Sorcerer or Bandit.

Hunter and warrior is also looking pretty good. I'm terrible with games like this because I want to have one of everything.

Right, with my copy of Dark Souls hopefully arriving tommorow (Xbox 360), i've been doing a bit of research to try and decide which class i want to use.

Without including any spoilers (i have literally just looked at the class names and a brief description of their play styles) i wondered what kind of class people are going to play as?

Will you try and copy your Demon Souls build?

After looking i have decided on the PYROMANCER class. I wanted to play as a priest at first as that was my build in Demon Souls, but it looks like that is unavailable in Dark Souls.

I like my build to have a good combination of Weapon Strength and Magic attacks as that combination seemed effective to me in Demon Souls.

Any thoughts?

(Again, Spoiler free please!!!)
