For my money the biggest restriction on next gen games will be game devs' time and resources. That's all.

This could be solved with good middleware I guess, but I'm not sure that it's as easy as people think... Press the Unreal Engine 4 button and out comes a beautiful game? I don't think so...

If Sony puts out a console for a loss, expect PSN to be a premium service ala LIVE. Where as almost nothing will be avalible unless your a PSN+ member and the pricing structure of PSN/PSN+ would prolly evolve to be more in line with LIVE.

Live fees, I feel, really help offset console losses at the retail registers.

But after seeing two things: first being PS3s launch, and second being what the WiiU is already aimed at(powerwise), I doubt MS or Snoy are looking to put out systems that cost 700-900usd to manufacter. Add into that mix the still sagging global economy, and my trick knee keeps twitching.

And in truth, those things I mentioned might just keep the next gen of hardware from launching even longer away. Both MS and Sony are doing well, MS is experiencing strong growth infact. Neither one will want to close this chapter of generational hardware anytime soon.

I bet they both feel that there current hardware can still evolve.

"You can make a next generation console that can cost you 299$ or 399$. Ps3 was just a mistake".

Yes i agree, but keep in mind they are making the consoles at a loss, look at the vita; and like i said maybe sony and microsoft cand do it, but for how long, i mena how many consecutives gens they can do this wihtout affecting them and the investors, also sony is going to loose money on vita i think they cannot afford loosing more money when the ps4 arrive, i know they can make it at that price, becuase they are not only gaming companys like nintendo but for how long, thats the question.

I agree with Erth. Since this Gen is one of the longest, the gap has to be a lot bigger. I know that Epic, like it did with the Xbox 360, is advising at least the next Microsoft Console to be at power wise so it can run The Unreal 3.5 and future updates.

Add the fact that one Mid End video card will be able to run the Unreal Engine 3.5 by the time all Next Gen systems are announced by Sony and MS.

OlderGamer,

"Way too many limitations.

Keeping it cool.
Keeping cost effective."

Keeping it cool? Not a problem.
Keeping cost effective? Not a problem at all.

Example: Look at the NGP, Quad core processor (the latest one), just for the reference. Apple for the iPad 2 use the same ARM processor that is in Playstation Vita, but dual core.

and the price of Vita? 249.99$ and it's processor is the best on the market for handhelds and mobile phones

"I expect an xboxone to xb360 level jump. At most."

BULLSHIT.

you saw Unreal engine 3.5 demo?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wdwHrCT5jr0

It's just a 3.5. It's not even Unreal Engine 4.0.

3.5 version of this what you saw can be used for GTX 580 videocards and it's not even CRYENGINE 4 or iD Tech 6.
This demo is not possible on current gen consoles.

iD Tech 6 will use voxels for example. You know what that means? That means that the difference between visual fidelity will be like from PS1 to PS3. I'm being honest. It's a fact.

All games built in polygons which have a lot of restrictions, voxels is the next big thing.

the difference between them is day and night. Thats a fact and you can push any art style with it. Realistic, or cartoonish. Does not matter.

About What you said OldGamer. It's sure that there are limitations but it's clear that we'll notice a big difference between this generation consoles and the next generation consoles.

I mean, PS3 has the equivalent of a 7900gt. This is 5 generation from the actual Nvidia GPUs. It's clear that what we can do now with an actual normal pc is far far away from the current "next gen" console but this is not my point.

I think that in the next console gen they'll have as a gpu either a GTX2xx or GTX4xx equivalent if they can manage to reduce th nm. If they can produce GTX2XX or GTX4xx(which will be harder) in 32 or 25nm from now on they'll be able to reduce the heat and the cost will be depreciated when selling consoles. I'm pretty sure that the next gen's gpu will handle DX11 for tesselation and as you see now all the engine are going dx11: unreal, frostbite, cryengine.

Speaking about CPU. Whatever CPU they'll decide to get into the next consoles it's clear that its going to be multicore with that i mean more then a quad core to be able to handle physx etc...

If they do that they'll be able to finally (i hope) give us some full hd games and now some stupid sub hd. And since consoles will have better gpus it'll profit to pc also since devs dont care about pc all they do is just port.

Now ... I hope that people realize that the term "Next Gen" is a bit stupid because theres no such thing as next gen. Next Gen is everyday in pc. GPUs are evolving everyday in pc DX11 is already in there, physx, amazing graphics. Next Gen only apply to console and, i think IMHO, that it's really stupid to hear that when you have a pc that is 10 time more powerful then the current consoles.

@ManuOtaku,

"if you took in consideration the 600$ price of the ps3, this gave a clear example, dont get me wrong for me at that time the price was worth it for what did you get in the box"

600$ is because of the Cell Microprocessor which was an exotic microprocessor that was in development exclusively for PS3 console by 3-4 companies.
Thats why it costed everyone 600$

Look at the NGP, Quad core processor (the latest one), just for the reference. Apple for the iPad 2 use the same ARM processor that is in Playstation Vita, but dual core.

And being honest I don't know that the markets are ready for new hardware.

Nintendo may have trouble moving 3DS and WiiU. And Sony could run into slow adoption for Vita as well. Hard to say but both all of those will still be cheaper to buy then a new MS/Sony console, pressumably.

Strongly disagree with ya Erth. The next gen jump will be much smaller then you think.

Way too many limitations.

Keeping it cool.
Keeping cost effective.

The industry will not suport systems that are expensive. If the new systems can't be sold for less then 500usd, they shouldn't made. The global economy is still very weak. I don't think MS nor Sony will wants to repeat the PS3 mess.

There is a limit to what is reasonable. But it alsways fun to speculate. Just keep in mind we a long ways to go before we hear much of anything from anyone. Just don't expect something scifi next gen.

"but it will be not the big leap as this gen. "

Manu, you are mistaken a bit. The leap will be absolutely huge. It's going to be of giant proportions in terms of visual fidelity and gameplay opportunity.

And then how much they will cost, i mean the games and the hardwares, and how long they will take to make the games? 10 years?, if they do a new L.A. Noire or gran turismo , look i think that those are also factors that are involve in the console creating process, more now than ever before if you took in consideration the 600$ price of the ps3, this gave a clear example, dont get me wrong for me at that time the price was worth it for what did you get in the box, but man that doesnt bode to well with most of the consumers and for that investors, look even the vita is been planned to sold at lost but they cannot afford to lost also on the home console department too, that will be too risky in my opinion, again maybe sony and microsoft can afford becuase they dont do only games, but for how long and under whom support.

Dremcastnews, well you know iam still playing on my wii, and ps2/gc/xbox for that matter, and i dig the graphics as much as with my ps3 and 360, to tell you the truth iam not a graphic whore, but i do love cel shaded games though.

But i ask this because this will be key for nintendo to keep the third party support through out its life cycle, and for when the new consoles from sony and miscrosfot arrive, i believe that the wii U should at least be more powerfull than the ps4 and 360 even if it is "old tech" like erthazus put it, so the difference will not be that big and not lef behind like this gen, which hurt them eventually in the third party support, one key area they want to fix.

Also i think the same way as Oldergamer, that the next gen the consoles will have better overall performance true 1080p, better AA, etc but it will be not the big leap as this gen.

I think to see Nintendo's franchises in HD for the first time (i'm excluding PC emulation here) is going to be worth the purchase of the Wii U if you're a fan, if not than there isn't much that will appeal at least, not yet anyway.

I think that even though the technology is not next generation it's still waters Nintendo hasn't ventured in yet so thus this is passed on to the player.

In some site i saw a rumour about the wii U to use the latest IBM Power7 CPUs come with 4MB of eDRAM per core stock configuration and that IBM tells that within the Wii U there's a 45nm custom chip with "a lot" of embedded DRAM. It's a silicon on insulator design and packs the same processor technology found in Watson, the supercomputer that bested a couple of meatbags on Jeopardy awhile back.

Iam not a tech savy this is a good thing or dont?,
