I doubt very much they were ever even offerred the chance to buy the information back, as bank transfers are a lot easier to trace than whatever information they've got now. On top of that, even if they did buy it back, they're hardly going to take the word of a few crooks that no copies were made.

a free game?
for the trouble theyve caused they shouldnt give us anything. they should buy back the information from the hackers, thats what they SHOULD do.

a free game would b great right now. but this problem could haunt ppl for years.

^Good point actually. Makes more sense.

I'd really like to see Sony keep the momentum they had going before GeoHotz arrived and poisoned the waterhole.

I think one free game would be fair compensation, but what I think they could do, is offer people two games from a selection of their first party PSN games.

I imagine any game that's been out for 6 - 12 months, won't be providing Sony with much revenue these days anyway, and if it's first party, they won't have to compensate a third party, so they could actually provide two games at little financial cost, but would generate a lot of great PR.

The problem with just giving people $10 - $20, is that they have no idea how people will spend it, and so they would actually have to dig very deep into their pockets to pay the royalty rates to other publishers. They'd also have the problem of people using their sub-accounts to collect hundreds of dollars/pounds/euros in compensation.

Anyway, we'll see. It needs to be good though.... really good.

^
Completely agree. Although two free games might be a bit much for 77 million accounts. I was thiking one free downloadable game, or a $10-$20 credit to everyone's PSN wallet.

I think they need to do the following:

1 - Offer a genuinely humble apology.

2 - Go into broad details about what they've done to the PSN to make it more secure, so that the internet tech heads can confirm that it's top tier security, and that network security is being taken extremely seriously going forward.

3 - Confirm that the new PSN will allow for more advanced features, with details to be revealed at E3.

4 - Offer PS Plus users an extra 2 - 4 months without charge, and an extra game this month.

5 - Give all PSN users two free PSN games from a reasonable selection of titles.

When Sony announce that the PSN is back online, they will have their best chance to hit the headlines again, so they need to ensure that there's nothing but good news to report, with a lot of rock solid assurances made.

Acting quickly and decisively with remarkable generosity is going to be the best way to turn this around. Ideally they need to make the compensation so remarkable, that talk of the compensation quickly overshadows the condemnation they've drawn throughout the incident. It's the best way to get public opinion back on their side, but heaven help them if they just settle on handing out minis. Now is not the time to be cheap.

I think the best way to come out of this is say their apologies and carry on, also this in my opinion would be an excellent time to market their alternative payment options so that people will still purchase from them over PSN.

I'll be honest though, as soon as they switch PSN back on a lot of people will start to forget.

Personally I will carry on using PSN, albeit through PSN/Pre-paid cards. And the only thing I expect/want from Sony is to give us back the time lost from our subscriptions equal to the time that PSN was down for, after all they didn't ask to get hacked..

If like the article suggests Sony does improve the network to allow more features (voice chat etc.) then that truly would be impressive but to be honest as long as its secure when it comes back, then I'm fine with that.

With all the negativity surrounding the PSN security breach of 2011, I thought this article stated some very positive and, more importantly, realistic ways in which Sony can come out of this looking pretty damn good. Here's hoping they're reading...
