@DrD - sorry dude - never saw this until now. Yeah that surprises me tbh. Nevertheless - if you're smart you won't buy them as standalones... you'll wait for the bundle with a game you want.

"My point, though, is that most people wont buy separate"

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/wii-sports-2-was-japans-june-best-seller

353,827 sales of Wii Sports Resort and 296,000 separate WMP add ons sold in first month in Japan. A lot more than you thought? ;)

Sure, but Nintendo want to sell a lot of these don't they? It's not just for the "hardcore" audience.

Either way the point on US to UK pricing still stands too.

I think you underestimate the WMP buying demographic. Have you actually bought or played either game? Both games are perfectly playable without WMP - they're enhanced by it not hamstrung by the lack of it. I'm pretty sure doubly so for any mini-games.

Are those 'most people' you know traditional gamers? Not necessarily representative of the majority of the Wii demographic. I'd say more of the machines have been bought as a social family machine.

Both Virtuo Tennis and Grand Slam support 2 players don't they? Currently your only other option if you have one of those is the other game - also tennis.

My point, though, is that most people wont buy seperate; most people I know that are buying it right now, are buying it for SP and online games. I hadnt actually thought of minigames tbf. Are those in Grand Slam?

@BraveArse
I'm talking purely about the separate price - obviously pack in ones come down to a more sensible price. The Wii is built on being a very social machine though - with a lot of 2-4 player games. If you buy one game and want to play against your kids, partner etc. then you need another add-on for them to use. Even hot seat type games are a bit of a pain with Wii-motes because of the whole kerfuffle of getting them on and off.

Why would you think the higher end price is what most of these units will get sold at Dr D? Most people, as far as I can see, are and will be buying WMP dongles with a game at around the usual RRP for such a game. I certainly only paid £37 for Grand Slam Tennis and the accuracy of the controls for that price is not something I'd ever bother to question...

@pleasant_cabbage
"but you're still setting the top most price you could pay for the parts of the controller as being normal."

The higher end prices are what most of the units will be sold at - so it is normal - who do you think will sell most of these things? What is the average people will pay? Not everyone is going to be paying £20 for an OEM version of a wiimote with no packaging.

Bottom line is that it is the RRP is set by Nintendo and that allows them all to price it as they have.

What about the US/UK price difference? Shop around online in the US and the price there comes down to $17.

Sensible people could get all the bits for about £50 (£22+13+15). I have not seen m+ being sold for more than £19.99 in any bricks n' mortar shop I went to. Still pricey but I think £71 is a bit fanciful.

Shop guy doesn't set the RRP and shop guy doesn't set the price in comparison to the US either. If Nintendo want this add on to take off they need the price on the street to be sensible in my opinion.

On the US to UK cost issue if you look at the 360 and PS3 controllers then the RRP's are set far more appropriately. £33 and £35 respectively here and $50 and $55 over there.

When you put it like that, it really is a spectacular rip. 76 pound for a controller, yup, Nintendo sure now how to squeeze the consumer. I'll get motion plus when it's bundled in with Red Steel 2.

So I wander in to a shop yesterday and see the Wii MotionPlus add on - double-take-price-gouge-mongous £22.99! RRP is actually £25. For something the vast majority of owners likely assume it already does?

Ok so you buy it with a game and it comes down somewhat - but if you only want one game and want to play it two player?

Now a "complete" Wii controller RRP = £33 + £18 + £25 = £76! (about £65 if ordered online)

(NB: US price RRP is $25 - thanks Nintendo!)
