Castlevania and vanquish personally.

Castlevania is a little rough in terms of some game design and maybe a tad too long but a great enjoyable experience with an awesome ending!

Vanquish kicks all sorts of ass but admittedly it does unfortunately seem a bit one note with very little variation in set piece moments and no plot to speak of to keep things engaging. Gameplay is superbly well designed and polished though.

RDR is a fun game but if you dont like GTA all that much don't bother. TBH i don't get the hype around this game. Its good but omg at all the hyperbole this game gets O_o

Alan wake as i've said before here is my biggest disappointment of the year. I'd avoid but as said above it splits opinions. Then again regardless of that i have to say one thing: 5 years??? For THIS??!

Borderlands: totally skip it if your playing solo; i learned this the hard way. It's just plain boring.

I still can't get it, how I managed to play through it :D

/e: missed G.s last post, then I go for Vanquish :P

Thanks Crysis, but I already have AC: Brotherhood and am steadily working my way through it. Problem is, I love it SO much I'll have almost certainly 100%ed before very long!

@Gherrit, if you *adore* Assassin's Creed, why not get the new Brotherhood game? i've finished it & the gameplay is absolutely excellent, a true sequel.
But if it's soley between the games you mentioned, RDR is definately the way to go, the similarities between the two ends at the style of gameplay, RDR has a much greater story than any GTA title along with extremely fun optional activities, like saving a whore from a drunk with a knife, you could choose to help the drunk & kill that damn whore! But if you're not sure of any of these games, just rent a few of them, they're all worth a go, but Borderlands takes a while to get into so it's definately not everybodies thing.

Bear in mind that Alan Wake can split opinion. I thought it was ok, but all that atmosphere and sense of creeping dread Gadzooks! refers to vanished within maybe 30 minutes after I realised that any time something was going to happen the camera would start swooping around and everything would go all slow motion. Way to ruin the suspense by giving shit loads of fore-warning guys, Yay!

Basically ended in it being a dull linear resident evil clone with a torch for me.

@ Chris2pher_Jack: I don't actually like GTA (only one I really enjoyed was Vice City), but I *adore* Assassin's Creed so I'm not against open world games. Should I therefore give RDR a miss, or is it still super quality?

Incidentally, I prefer shorter games to long ones - I;m not keen on games that are time skins, and so for that reason as well I might skip borderlands.

Castlevania is looking to be one the I definitely get.

So, it's between A.Wake, Vanquish and RDR now - can't make up my mind, I'm interested in all three equally!

Alan Wake. There isnt anything else available with even a fraction of the atmosphere and sense of creeping dread that Wake has.

As a bonus it looks fappin gorgeous.

I'd also have to give the nod to Borderlands, even if you never play it co-op. I only played a couple hours in co-op out of around 120 hours total play time.

Borderlands is still great playing by yourself, i played it a fair bit when i was Silver on XBL, personally i would recommend any of them except for Vanquish & Alan Wake, that's assuming money's tight, you will question it's value for how long they'll entertain you, kind of a quality vs quantity moment, but RDR is a must have, if you enjoyed the style of GTA, you will definitely enjoy RDR because of it's great story, granted that it gets a tad boring half way through, but picks right up a little later on.

I'm gonna throw my hat in for Borderlands or RDR too.

But as previously mentioned, Borderlands is best enjoyed co-op. I played most of it single player and it was ok, but if you've got a few different players with different classes it brings a whole new angle to the combat.

I'd recommend Borderlands, because it's awesome, but it gets pretty boring/annoying if you play it alone. So Lords of Shadow is the right choice, its length, gameplay and story are very good for some videogaming in the evening :>

So, I've skipped over a few quality titles this year simply as I've not been spending as much time in front of the telly as I used to. Now that I've re-joined the ranks of singledom (boo!), I could do with some tips on which modern classic I should pick up next.

The games I'm considering are as follows:

Red Dead Redemption
Alan Wake
Castlevania: Lord of Shadow
Borderlands: GoTY Edition
Vanquish

I've only got the time (and money!) to really enjoy a couple of these titles, so which two would you recommend I pick up for long nights alone, in front of the telly, with only a pot noodle for comfort and nothing to look forward to at the end of an evening save a little cry and a wank?
