I got a problem with authority as it is, and I definitely don't need a company trying to look over my shoulder. The sheer arrogance involved in having to "report" to "Daddy Microsoft" or "Daddy Ubisoft" every time I feel the audacity to play MY game, on MY computer, is nothing short of a dealbreaker for me.

I will never give up one nanogram of my right to privacy, just so a bunch of clueless executives at a billion dollar corporation can sleep better at night.

I don't like pirates, I think they're all hypocrites with a stupid hobby, and I think they should apply their skills to making games, rather than giving other peoples games away for free.

Indiscriminate solutions like Ubisofts or Microsofts, or Starforce before them, which intrude on your experience, breaks your games and basically accuses you of having no personal ethics, only serve to empower actual pirates, who already see themselves as selfrighteous crusaders sticking it to The Man. This time though, The Man is actually there, and he's trespassing on consumers for no reason.

How is that not the greatest victory, or at least the most justified sense of purpose, that's ever been handed to software pirates?

I think the negative reactions against DRM, is generally exaggerated, i have several pc games & have never had any problems regarding DRM & the only people i know who have, are pirates, & i know several of them, but bypassing most DRM is just normally as simple as Googling a certain torrent & following instructions, which is the main problem, people are be going to do this regardless of how impressive your protection is, most these torrent & p2p sites should either be shut down, or severely limited to what is & isn't allowed to be transfered, such as games, movies & music.

Really? The Mars guy did that? Goddamn. Talk about shooting myself in the foot.

I don't blame you for enterpreting the quotes the way you do, but he didn't make them to gamers, and he didn't make them to the gaming press, he made them during his call to investors. It was money people, talking money talk.

If you want to blame anyone for that, blame the "journalist" who decided to take it out of its proper forum. I'm pretty sure he wouldn't be making those statements to a group of passionate gamers. Although I'm honestly not sure.

I can't get my panties in a twist over the subscription quote. He didn't say he was going to make anything subscription based that was free today, he said he'd like to. It's a bit like me saying I'd love an army of Cambodian sexslaves. It doesn't mean I'm enslaving the next hot Cambodian chick I see. That's just choosing to be offended for the sake of being offended.

When they do introduce a CoD subscription model, I think you can pretty sure it's going to be for an MMO style product. You simply can't sell an FPS that way.

I judge people by their actions, not their empty words, and when you do that, Kotick is easily on par with every other gaming CEO around. He doesn't create outrageous surcharges for used games, he doesn't taint games with DRM, but he does force you to pay the deluxe-edition price for his flagship products, without an alternative copy featuring less content, like the competition.

Nobody's asking you to be thankful or even respectful, he's not doing anyone any favors, but personally I'll gladly pay an extra 10 euro to be free of shady business models and pointless malware.

"Really, what do you expect? You think the head of Mars Incorporated spends his day toiling around the floor of a chocolate factory, meticulously balancing his next batch of Snickers and worshipping at the holy altar of chocolate? Come on, now..."

Thats funny you mention of all companies mars, because thats precisely what Mars's first ceo did until he died and the tradition to walk the floors has been passed down.... Seriously you couldnt find a more obessed ceo than mars, they even have an intellegence service that rivals the cia.

BUT

Yes I do expect the ceo's of my favorite game companies to be talking about games and NOT profits. Thats something he can keep between his investors and his company, I am a customer and not concerned with how much money they make, and being as close to a world wide deppression as we are...it just makes him look like a dick to be even TALKING about charging us for something that was already free. He would be the biggest "pusher" in the world to be giving away free online play and one day you get a message saying "screw you, pay me".

True.

Steam makes buying games quick and simple, it makes installing them and setting them up effortless (The automatic update system? Genius!) it adds features to your game, like the ingame messenger and multiplayer invite system, as well as showing all the relevant news about a game in the library page - All the while protecting the IPs of their vendors.

It's close to perfection, aside from those unfortunate patches and server crashes.

It also exposes everything that's wrong with Games for Windows Live or Ubisoft Online Services Platform. One is efficient and actually offers you a service, the others are just a pointless annoyance.

It is worth noting that both Ubisoft and THQ have recently started cutting their DRM out of games that are directed towards the classical PC audiences - Are they slowly admitting they blew it? Hmmm.

Steam can become the perfect pc platform, that's assuming they can mange to keep it relatively bug free (i've had problems with several patches where offline mode won't even work!)& obtain ALL new releases, til then, we can only hope

That's a million dollar question right there, Crysis.

A CEO is well informed, and he has to be, since he's responsible for the day to day operations of a corporation, but the boardroom is an entirely different entity. They're there to protect the company and its investors, but your average boardroom is usually made up by retired executives and investors who want to be heard. Sometimes founders or heirs of founders.

What I'm saying is that these are in a lot of cases people, who are taking it down a notch, and only look at the overhead results. Their main role is mostly politicial, and it's very common for a boardmember to hold several posts in several different companies. That's a lot of info for one guy to handle.

Like I said, these companies aren't doing better because they implemented DRM - Surely, if their boards were alert, they'd nix that solution based on those results, and try to find the real problem?

That brings me to my own opinion - That the best DRM in the world is a DRM-free game, that rocks.

You can blame lackluster sales on pirates all you want, and keep in mind, the games industry has been heralding its own impending destruction at the hands of pirates since the floppy disc - It's taking a while, huh? Really, you're never going to stop them, your average pirate crew is at least as talented as the people who make the DRM - All you can do is make games that people want to buy, and let them enjoy them in peace, instead of annoying them with pointless malware.

That being said, I could write a book on why Steam is close to being the perfect kryptonite against pirates.

THQ dropped GFWL for DoW2: Retribution, & hopefully everything else to be released :D All it is, is a quick log in, i fail to see the anger against using GFWL, sure it's a little annoying, but it doesn't kill the game, atleast not that i know of.
I would have to assume that DRM prevents pirating to some degree, otherwise it would be a waste of effort, space& most importantly-money! & do you think these old, gray men in a boardroom would be willing to spend money on anti-piracy if it's not working? I can only assume they have statistics all over the place from varied analysts telling them that it is working.
Don't get me wrong, i'm definately not for DRM, but i can see it from both points of view, one side wants to protect their property & the other wants to steal their property but DRM makes it harder... also can be a nuisance to certain people, like if you wanted to play a LAN game with a dozen people, but the game's limited to 3 or 5 installs, but this isn't a normal case, the LAN community is insignificant, i know people who do lan, i'm just saying that it's a small portion of the gaming community, but i could bet that a considerable amount of people on this site have Lanned, but that's becasue these are the more 'hardcore' gamers.

Because the protection doesn't work. All it does is ruin good games.

Currently Games for Windows Live and Ubisoft Online Services Platform has kept a total of zero games from being pirated, while making a lot of honest PC gamers pretty angry - Probably in some cases, to the point of making them download their games off a bittorrent - Because pirates don't punish you for using their services. That's my own presumption, of course.

The way it is now, to use your analogy, the bouncer is missing all the drunks, and just punching sober people instead, based on the presumption that they're all drunks. The sober people, myself included, are not pleased.

THQ games with Games for Windows Live:
Warhammer 40k - Dawn of War 2
Warhammer 40k - Dawn of War 2 - Chaos Rising
Juiced 2
Red Faction - Guerilla

That's what I could find in a minute.

Of course you're right, I don't know the exact numbers, but it's nevertheless a fact that games with DRM get pirated just the same as games without - And that the companies who have implemented it are still doing just as badly as they did before (Capcom and Ubisoft in particular) - So what's the point?

The only use I see, is a bunch of old, gray men in a boardroom going "Yes, DRM, these words are pleasing to me".

In what games do THQ use DRM in? thought they only used what Steam already offered? well most (if not all) of their new games are on steam, so i don't see why they would bother with their own DRM.
Why would you blame these companies for wanting to protect their products anyway? It's like getting angry at a club owner for his bouncer getting too ruff on an agressive drunk, if those agressive drunks weren't there in the first place, that bouncer would not have been needed -translation, blame the pirates, sure it's possible the defence against it maybe excessive, i do not know, i doubt you know either on the exact amount of piracy & how much, if at all, that the DRM helps.

@Crysis - Haha!

You're right, I would be a fool to disagree. He obviously never thinks of PR. The Brutal Legend fuck-up could have been easily avoided, but let's face it, the reason why people make threads like this, is because it's a sport to hate the guy.

Just so we're clear, I don't "love" Activision, I can just understand a lot of the decisions they make. I play two of their games. One's an old copy of Guitar Hero 2, and the other is Modern Warfare 2. That hardly constitutes a major conneseur of Activision merchandise. I just think the anti-Activision trend is a little crazy.

What I do think, though, is that Kotick actually makes a lot of sense as a CEO. You'd basically be a fool if you didn't hike up prices when your company loses half its value in a month - And who wouldn't want a million billion subscriptions? I know I would.

Sure, business is driven by greed and ambition, and the fact that he's pretty open about it doesn't make him look very sympathetic, but would you rather listen to the usual, sanitized bullshit? I find his attitude a little refreshing.

... And all junkies are not female. It's just that most drug dealers are male. I could've made it a gay romance if you like that better? :D

@itwa5me - Dude, he's a CEO. Why would he be talking about games he didn't personally make? What would Kotick be doing in a gaming mag? His job isn't to create games, it's to make spreadsheets look good.

We can all agree that some of his statements have been extremely thoughtless, and certainly not helpful to his company in the slightest, but don't you think people tend to overreact just a little bit to what the guy says nowadays?

Kotick actually knows how to code. I don't know if he's created games himself, but he's certainly created software back in the day, which is more than can be said for most gaming CEOs.

How would he have time to play? He's the head of a multi-billion dollar company. You think he's home by 6 PM every night so he can easily squeeze in an hour of Halo? Nu uh. He's also 40 or 50 or whatever - I don't know a lot of gamers that age, anyway.

Really, what do you expect? You think the head of Mars Incorporated spends his day toiling around the floor of a chocolate factory, meticulously balancing his next batch of Snickers and worshipping at the holy altar of chocolate? Come on, now...

I'd love for publishers to be made of gaming oompaloompas running around yelling "BOOM! HEADSHOT!" in funny little squeaky voices, but conventionally speaking, that's rarely how a business looks from the inside.

We can all agree that if Kotick was actually supposed to be a guy personally in charge of putting games together, in any way, he would be a horrible person. The fact is, he's just a suit at the top of a coporation. All strategy and numbers. And personally I don't see how he's more evil, than anyone else doing the exact same job.

Evil to me is the people at THQ, Ubisoft or Capcom who are ruining games with DRM that punishes honest PC gamers, and gives pirates a moral mandate to continue subverting the market.

I hate kotick not for being honest, I hate him for being in the position to screw us all at the drop of a dime. He talks to the wall street journal more than any gaming mags, and why? Because money is all the guy cares about. He's gone on record bragging about the fact that he's NOT a gamer, and its very obvious he doesnt pay attention. He runs his mouth off about how much he could potnetially rob us, and thats why I and most people hate him.

@DSB
"Do you think you make it to the top of a multi-billion dollar company by putting your ego second, and being a nice little gray worker mouse?"
Ofc not, I was saying he's outspoken & a massive egotist, i never once said i hate him, but i can easily understand why everyone does, he says the wrong thing to the wrong people, why would we want to know that if he had his way we would be paying monthly subs for Console games? Kotick is the main reason ActiVision has a bad image right now, you would be a fool to disagree, however, it's only a very small community of Anti-ActiVision out there so they could not care less how a couple hundred people hate them, aslong as it has no noticable impact on sales.
"a junkie falling in love with her drug dealer" all junkies female now? well i guess you learn something new everyday :P

@Erthazus, calm your ego down & stop with the outrageous (& more often, stupid) claims, even if DSB likes ActiVision, so what? you try to pick a bone when there's nothing to be picked, if you're not going to contribute to the conversation in any sensible way, then don't comment at all, you're already the most hated person on this site, maybe you're just an immature attention seeker. You understand that your comments have the maturity level of a dopey twelve year old right?
"go and work for Activision. You are defending them like a fanboy. I didn't even read your post much and i see"-exactly why people hate you!

I haven't defended anyone. Actually, you were the only one crying that EA was awesome and Activision sucked. I was saying they're all multi-billion dollar companies trying to make money any way they can.

Maybe you need to read it again. Get a grown-up to help you with the particulars.

I did add that developers want a good pay and good terms for what they do, though. The idea that they're struggling artists couldn't be further from the truth.

@Michael - I wish I could do that - I wish we could all do that, but I'm gobsmacked that people are so uncritical that they roll with whatever a vocal minority spouts forth online, rather than evaluating the sources and applying common sense. And the naiveté of the average gamer as to how the industry is run is pretty impressive. I just can't shut up when I see stuff like that.

@Erthazus - Right, I'm an invisible ghost-fanboy, cleverly using facts and common sense to support my outrageous, fanatical claims. That's exactly what fanboys do.

Great post, yet again.

Do people care actually?

EA was the same like Activision years ago... Now it's a much better place. Activision maybe after 3-4 years will be good again.

Who cares...

@DSB, go and work for Activision. You are defending them like a fanboy. I didn't even read your post much and i see you being offended by others who want to "fight" or e.t.c. Stop being a fanboy. We got it. You are a big fan of Call OF Duty franchise, Bobby Kotick and Acivision. We get it.

So basically you're saying you hate Kotick for being honest? I don't know, personally I like people who swing that way. I'm under no illusion that a CEO is supposed to be my friend. He's supposed to try and get my money any way he can, because that's what the board hires him to do. Do you think you make it to the top of a multi-billion dollar company by putting your ego second, and being a nice little gray worker mouse? I wanna live in the world you live in, that sounds very cute and fuzzy. The real answer, however, is that you get to the top of a multi-billion dollar industry by knowing your shit, sucking off the right people, and genuinely believing you're God. If you don't, no one else will.

I guess I can see your point in liking companies, personally I'm impressed by the products of a few myself - However, that doesn't mean I should slavishly suspend my common sense and natural skepticism, simply because I've been satisfied once or twice. You don't owe them anything except the money you've agreed to pay for their product. That's the nature of your relationship. They aren't giving you anything, at all, they're selling merchandise. Showing loyalty based on a relationship like that is mindnumbingly naive. It's like a junkie falling in love with her drug dealer. It's religion, not an enlightened view.

Fact is no one actually knows what happened with Infinity Ward. Depending on which side you believe, either Kotick or Zampella and West reached a fatal level of greed, and no matter which side you pick, you're still just blindly buying into hearsay. We won't know until the trial, but the widespread perception that a software developer is a poor little puppydog, who never asks anything from anyone, and really just wants to make the games that makes the whole world sing, is about as naive as it gets. All that's saying, is that you've never seen a tech business from the inside. These are highly educated, highly sought after people, who are almost constantly negotiating their salaries based on that fact - Not because it helps their creativity, but because it helps their wallets.

PS.

What Activision tried to do with Brutal Legend, however, was obviously a dick move. It was also an incredibly stupid move, since they were fighting for a crappy game, in a trial they were bound to lose, and actually stood to lose a lot more by looking like greedy grabasses - Even though a claim like that is pretty standard fare in most major businesses. I'm guessing Activisions leadership were eager to move along with it, because Brutal Legend was going to EA. There's definitely some cock-measuring going on there.

@DSB, Everyone hates ActiVision because of the Infinity Ward incident, although very few people actually knows exactly what happened, but the fact that their CEO is a pompous egotist who is by far the most outspoken person in the gaming industry, doesn't really help, while not everything he says is utter bullshit, he just normally thinks out loud on how they want to get our money & noone wants to hear that, imagine going to a car yard & having the dealer only mention how much commision they get if/when they sell the vehicle instead of actually trying to sell the vehicle.
Also i disagree with your statement about not being thankful for, or loyal to any multinational corporation, i think when someone purchases a product, it's understandably to appreciate the company of the product if it's quality meets or exceed your expectations, for example: I've only had good experiances with Sony Electronic products, & i've had only bad experiances with LG products, so I'm willing to spend the extra $50-$100 on A Sony Bravia than an LG tv simply because i have more respect for Sony delivering quality goods, but if a better product came around from another brand for a similur price, i see no reason to stay 'loyal' to Sony because they are, in the end, just another faceless corporation, but i love their products because they keep delivering on their end of the deal for quality-heck, i still have a working early walkman & an early discman(not that i use them anymore, but they still work!).

I love the logic that usually comes with the internet hivemind.

How about considering the fact that Activision doesn't actually charge you for buying its games used? Sure, they might slap on another 10 dollars at retail, but so do many other publishers - Including EA - Since they lost half of their companies on the stock market, but Activision doesn't also punish you for buying a used game.

You should never be thankful for, or loyal to any multinational corporation, but I fail to see what Activision is doing that's so much worse than anyone else. They don't charge you extra for buying their games used like EA does, they don't smack you with faulty DRM like Microsoft, THQ, Capcom or Ubisoft. Even the fact that they charge extra is a bit of a fallacy, considering that games like Civ V will run you 5 extra euro for a full version - They just don't provide you with an option that has less content for less the price.

All Activision really has going against it is a dorky-looking CEO (Personally I think he's a shaved mogwai) that talks a lot, and who ended up in litigation with one of their developers, rightly or wrongly, the facts aren't known.

As for franchising, this has been standard practice in gaming since the 70's. Nobody was whining when the earlier Call of Duty sequels came out. The thing that might make it stand out with Activision is that 80% of their inhouse studios have absolutely no talent what so ever, and people can only really be bothered to play two of their major franchises.

Where's the crime, though? Besides the fact that Bobby Kotick likes his curly self, and the fact that he wants to make money, like every other CEO on the planet?

Good luck with those boycotts. I'm sure this time people will rise up against this unbelievable tyranny and oppression. I mean a couple of five year olds, who are obviously just brainwashed, have already preordered Black Ops enough to fill Activisions coffers yet again, proving for the umpteenth time that people talk a good game online, but tend to choose a bit differently when their buddies aren't watching. It's a bit like being a closet fag.

^

Buying the game and not being able to get the DLC because it's expensive as fuck is a problem you cannot avoid simply by NOT getting the DLC.

Anyways, I hate MW2 since the game sux (esp compared to MW2).

But my point here is that Kotick is a douche (yeah, like that needs to be said anymore).

Also the only thing I see fault in with the BFBC2 DLC system is PC users not getting all of it :O (at least not what I've noticed?).

ALSO, Starcraft 2 being priced higher than the average PC game? WELL DURH DOUCHEBAG, what in gods name did you expect? It's been in development for such a long time and they've put so much more money into it...well of course they'll squeeze you of a few more dollah/euros. Even there we have the quality! SC2 quality > M2W for example, how you can even mention that SC2 being overpriced (not sure this was your opinion or just the opinion of the people you talked about), is beyond my comprehension.

NOW I WILL CONTINUE THIS WALL OF TEXT BY WRITING "ROBERT KOTICK IS A DOUCHE" a few rows down.
.
.
.
.

Robert...Kotick, is a dweeb...a pillock...a HORRIBLE DOUCHE!
