I got the impression from reviewers it was some re-invention of the fps genre with nice art deco stylings and what I got was hitting people in the face with a wrench surrounded by survival horror cliches and retarded fps design consisting of arbitarily blocking the way and making you get keys and all that tired old doom bullshit which was fine in 93 but not now. I played it for a few hours then took it back and went back to playing CoD4. It may have been decent enough in the arcade but the conversion was really awful. On some of the stages there was slowdown to the point where it took about ten seconds to throw three jabs. When I took it back the guy asked why I was returning it. I just said "It's shit". So I got Devil May Cry 2 in exchange. It's the only game I've ever returned. I'm a huge fan of Counter-Strike on the PC, but as CS:Source had just come out and my PC wasn't up to the job, I figured the Xbox version would tide me over. What a complete shower of shit that game was. NOTHING like proper Counter-Strike. The mouse and keyboard controls were sublime. I also quite liked Blood Omen 2, but only because I'm a huge fan of the Legacy of Kain/Soul Reaver series. They've just not been well considered enough for the the hardware. For Sim City 2000 on the GBA it's like they crammed the entire 2000 game onto the handheld, realized that it wouldn't run at any sort of playable speed and then proceeded to cut out functionality. The result is a game worse than the original Sim City. I'm sure they ended up re-drawing 50%-70% of the screen because of the overlapping isometric tiles. I'm sure that could have been optimised, as it stands the game crawls slower and slower the bigger your city gets. Got 7/10 in GamesTM and I thought, 'why not.' Shame I didn't think 'fuck that' because its graphics were so, so bland and the gameplay so, so mundane and unexciting. Worst of all was friendly AI - the good old 'if friendly guy dies, mission failed' game design that everyone loves to hate is present and correct. And the third mission is set on top of a load of rooftops. With 2 AI following you. And they always, always jump off the edge and die.
