It’s a rather interesting read, as the presentation seems to suggest that the original concept had more depth.

Then again, there is no way to verify the authenticity of the content.

Go have a read anyway.

The Wii-exclusive is out now in North America.

With both Sony’s Arc and Microsoft’s Natal landing in stores later in the year, Michael Pachter has concluded who he thinks will win the motion controller war, and it all has to do with price point.

“The key to success with a retrofitted motion controller is penetration,” Pachter told NowGamer. “If price points are high, it is unlikely that Natal or Sony’s motion controller will sell many units; if they are very low, they will sell a lot more. Without a meaningful installed base of consoles with the new motion controllers, developers will not be able to cost justify development of games that require motion control.

“Therefore, it’s a chicken and egg problem.

“My uninformed opinion is that Microsoft will price relatively low (around $50), and Sony will price higher (around $100), and that suggests that Microsoft will have greater success.

“If my assumed price points are off the mark, the outcome will be different.”

While Sony has continued to remain rather quiet regarding its controller – unless you count changing its release date or denying its name time and time again – Microsoft has instead been relatively open with Natal.

Aaron Greenberg even predicted that it will be in “millions” of homes come Holiday 2010.

Guess we’ll find out once the holidays hit who wins the match- hopefully, it’s the consumer.

Naughty Dog’s Amy Hennig had a chat with the LA Times this week regarding how she went from being a student in film school to creating videogames.

Turns out, the videogame bug bit her hard while working as freelancer for Atari in 1989.

Apparently, the aspiring cinematographer with a bachelor’s in English Lit from UC Berkeley had a “light bulb moment” while working as a freelance on Atari’s Electrocop videogame, and decided that games were the way to go.

“It was purely for pay. But once I started, my wheels began to turn and I had a light bulb moment: that this was a more interesting and pioneering medium than film,” she told the paper.

This lead to a stint at Electronic Arts, where she became the lead designer on Michael Jordan: Chaos in the Windy City after the previous lead quit.

As far as giving advise to others on how to break into the business like she did, she says hard work has more to do with it than luck, and you have to continue to be creatively flexible while constantly learning along the way.

“Everything I learned as an undergraduate with English literature and in film school about editing and shots and the language of film has come into play, but in a way I couldn’t possibly have planned,” she said.

“It’s a meritocracy in the sense that if you’re a hard worker and people see you have an aptitude, you get a shot usually. Then your fate is in your hands.

“This is an industry in which you constantly have to relearn things and almost start over. If you can’t do that, you don’t last”.

It’s a very good read, and it’s refreshing to see that someone as talented as Hennig still harbors a sense of wonderment and appreciation for her field after so many years in the business.

Hennig’s latest game, Uncharted 2 is up for a Writer’s Guild of America award.

DICE’s Patrick Bach has revealed that Battlefield: Bad Company 2 will have day-one content available through an in-game store at launch.

Containing both free and fee-based content, the DLC is aimed at providing a lengthy “post-launch campaign” for the game.

“We see the game as the first step to a longer experience,” the senior producer told WorthPlaying. “We have an in-game store where you get free content or you can buy new content to the game, so it’s a very integral part of the game that we will have a long post-launch campaign.

“I think people will be thrilled to see what’s in that already. On day one, you will get some really cool stuff.”

Bach also revealed that due to the successful launch of Battlefield 1943 on Xbox Live Arcade, older PC properties were something DICE got a “good taste from” and as far as releasing more in the future – you “never know” what will happen.

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 is set for release in March on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.

There’s a console demo out there to be had if you wanna try your hand.

Ubisoft said in its Q3 investors call today that the game would see Ezio striking the Templars at their headquarters in Rome.

It would also include what Ubi called “innovative” multiplayer, where players can participate in an assassination mode against friends online.

Further information would not be revealed on the multiplayer, but Ubi said that the general rule for new releases is that each will contain cooperative multiplayer and as far as Assassin’s Creed was concerned, Ubi would not comment on whether it would be a yearly title, but that it will continue to support the franchise.

Last month, Ubisoft said a new AC game was on the way with mutliplayer.

After initial confusion, the firm confirmed to us the game does not tie into the recent DLC for Assassin’s Creed II.

Ubi then said ACII’s Ezio would return to the title as protagonist after it was revealed the title was a continuation of the second game’s plot.

Ubisoft boss Yves Guillemot also said today that Assassin’s Creed II has now sold more than 8 million units.

“Some people have been saying that the Japanese game industry is dead, and all that… I dunno,” was the reply. “I will say that Final Fantasy XIII is one really epic title for high definition consoles. With this game, we are going to resurrect the whole thing”.

Going on to cite the Call of Duty Series as a Western game that has influenced the team, Kitase and Toriyama revealed that God of War style-remakes of previous Final Fantasy titles are unlikely.

During the same interview, the duo clarified comments made by Square president Yoichi Wada’s on the future of the RPG series, stating that his comment was taken out of context.

The game’s out in one month for PS3 and Xbox 360. Start planning for the future now, kiddos.

Nintendo of Australia has announced that its won a lawsuit filed against James Burt for pirating New Super Mario Bros. Wii.

The judgment handed down in the case comes to Burt owing the company $1.5 million AUD ($1.3 million US) for loss of revenue from a game that has so far sold over 10 million units.

Loaded onto the net on November 6, one week before the game was released, Burt was the first one to pirate the game, thus allowing Nintendo to use its “sophisticated technological forensics to identify the individual responsible for illegally copying the file and making it available for further distribution”.

Using this information, Nintendo obtained a court order on November 23 to search Burt’s “residential premises”, leading to the seizure of “property from those premises in order to gain further evidence against the individual.”

Despite the monetary overkill the guy has to pay, moral of the story – don’t steal. Especially from Nintendo or any other company rich enough to visit your house under a court order.

Here’s the full PR, courtesy of Joystiq:

Nintendo confirms the settlement of a Federal Court action against an individual in Australia for illegally copying and uploading to the Internet the first game file of Nintendo’s highly-anticipated video game, New Super Mario Bros. Wii for the Wii(TM) console. The game file was first made available for illegal download worldwide on 6 November, 2009, a week prior to its official release in Australia.

This legal proceeding was commenced to protect the creative rights and innovation of game developers, and to combat the growing international problem of Internet piracy. Under Australian law, copying and distributing games without the permission of the copyright holder is a breach of the Copyright Act.

The legal proceeding resulted in a settlement in which the individual will pay to Nintendo the sum of $1.5 Million dollars by way of damages to compensate Nintendo for the loss of sales revenue caused by the individual’s actions.

Upon the game being uploaded to the Internet, Nintendo was able to employ the use of sophisticated technological forensics to identify the individual responsible for illegally copying the file and making it available for further distribution. On 23 November, 2009, Nintendo obtained a Federal Court search order in respect of the individual’s residential premises. This led to the seizure of property from those premises in order to gain further evidence against the individual.

Nintendo guards its intellectual property rights in order to protect the interests of its valued consumers, its own interests, as well as the interests of game development companies. Nintendo will pursue those who attempt to jeopardise our industry by using all means available to it under the law.

Nintendo has been working to combat piracy for approximately 20 years. Piracy is a significant threat to Nintendo’s business, as well as over 1,400 game development companies working to provide unique and innovative games for the Nintendo platform. Fewer sales of Nintendo’s hardware and software systems means fewer resources that Nintendo, its licensees, developers and publishers have to create and market new video game products which is ultimately to the detriment of video game enthusiasts. When there is a decrease in game development, there is also a decrease in the number of jobs in the industry. The existence of piracy jeopardises the strength of the video game industry overall.

Final Fantasy XIII developers Yoshinori Kitase and Motomu Toriyama have told the EU PS Blog they were both confused at Square president Yoichi Wada’s recent comments on the future of the RPG series.

Last month, Wada said the release of FFXIII could see the death of “this type of game”, but Kitase-san and Toriyama-san said Wada’s [...]

Final Fantasy XIII developers Yoshinori Kitase and Motomu Toriyama have told the EU PS Blog they were both confused at Square president Yoichi Wada’s recent comments on the future of the RPG series.

Last month, Wada said the release of FFXIII could see the death of “this type of game”, but Kitase-san and Toriyama-san said Wada’s comments were taken out of context.

“We don’t know exactly what he meant by that. We don’t really know what he meant by this style of game,” they both said.

“If you consider that during Final Fantasy XIII’s development, at peak time the team consisted of over 300 people. It was a huge team, plus it took a several long years to get the game finished. So, if Mr. Wada meant that we would never make another Final Fantasy title with the similar number of people, taking as long as FFXIII did, we would agree.”

The duo suspect what Wada may have meant there would be smaller development teams in future projects.

“Obviously in the future we want to be much more efficient,” they explained. “Having worked on XIII, we feel that we have got much better at making good games for high definition consoles. In the future our teams will be smaller and more effectively run.

“We suspect that is what Mr. Wada meant by his statement.”

Final Fantasy XIII releases a month from today in the west for PS3 and 360.

Wedbush Morgan’s Michael Pachter has said he expects Call of Duty franchise sales down by $250 million this year.

The analyst made the claim in a note ahead of Activision’s Q4 FY10 financials on Wednesday.

“Call of Duty’s phenomenal launch poses a difficult comparison, and we expect a year-over-year decline of $250 million for the franchise,” said Pachter.

Back at the start of the year, Activision confirmed Modern Warfare 2 had made over $1 billion in revenue.

Pachter also said that, thanks to the “phenomenal launch” of the Infinity Ward juggernaut back in November, sales of the shooter could be the reason behind low sales for other Activision games like DJ Hero, Tony Hawk: Ride and Band Hero.

Treyarch will be doing this year’s installment. As for who’s doing the one after that, almost certainly Modern Warfare 3, the rumourmongers reckon it’s not Infinity Ward.

Expect Big Bob to talk about how much richer he has become thanks to MW2 tomorrow.

EA CEO John Riccitiello said last night the first-party hardware price-cuts made in the second half of last year came “too late”.

Speaking in the company’s Q3 FY10 financial call, the exec said price-cuts for PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii were too slow in bringing down the price.

“I think a… factor in 2009 was sort of a lack of aggressive pricing on first-party if you will, a little bit too late with their price-cuts,” he said, answering a question on overall industry weakness and decreased tie-ratios.

He added, however, state that console use was on the up, despite the emergence of social platforms.

“First up we do have data and research on the amount of time consumers are spending with games, and increasingly and importantly they’re spending more time with their consoles than they ever have before – so I don’t think it’s a consumer behaviour issue if it’s anything at all,” he said.

At gamescom last August, after much pressure, Sony cut the price of PS3 down to £249/$299/€299. It was a move Riccitiello welcomed.

It was then followed up by a Wii price-cut for Japan, US and Europe – but not the UK – at Toyko Game Show, before Microsoft announced a European price-cut for Xbox 360.

EA’s confirmed that BioWare’s Star Wars MMO, The Old Republic, won’t make the publisher’s next financial year.

Speaking in EA’s Q3 earnings call last night, CFO Eric Brown said the game won’t ship in the 12 months ending March 31, 2011.

“We are not assuming that we bring a major new MMO to market in fiscal ‘11. We will continue to increase significant development cost as we prepare this title for launch,” he said.

Both EA and Lucas has previously said the game is aiming for a “spring 2011″ release, putting the launch in either April or May 2011.

As CEO John Riccitiello added, the costs involved here are gigantic, so don’t be hugely shocked if this trundles off into the back half of next year.

“It’s a significant cost,” said the exec. “MMOs can cost as much as two to six, seven times as much as a front-line title, if they’re done right.

“It is a major investment for us.”

Brown eased through analyst questions in the call last night by assuring the mega-costs involved in developing the game will be repaid in full.

“I think the important point here is you ask that title goes live, and we’re not giving any specific date, we’ll move from a net OpEx investment mode to a highly profitable op-income contributor,” he said.

“So it’s a pretty important step change, when you compare a year with the MMO active versus the development stage that we’re currently in this fiscal year.”
