Sony has announced a period of scheduled maintenance on the PlayStation Network this week. The downtime kicks off at noon PT on August 22 and is expected to last six and a half hours. According to the PlayStation Blog, if you’ve signed into the PSN recently you should still be able to play online during the outage, but the PlayStation Store, PlayStation Home and Account Management will be unavailable.

PS4 development kits will be made available to educators through the PlayStation First Academic Programme starting tomorrow. Educators at Universities interested in the kits will need to seek out an Expression of Interest application through email. Kits for both the new console and Vita are available, and Sony feels educators will be able to use both in innovative ways in the classroom. Other platform specific licences for academic development include: PS3, PSP, PlayStation Home (HDK), Move, and Mobile. Thanks, Develop.

PlayStation virtual world Home is about to get a little cosier thanks to a system called Blueprint: Home, which will allow players to design their own apartments. Currently, user housing is restricted to a generic template or premium themed housing, and although you’re free to decorate as you see fit (and can afford), it doesn’t scratch that “I want seventeen windows” itch. Sony has opened a dedicated mini-site for its E3 2012 livestreams, which will include the main press conference along with other content from the show floor later in the week. The presser kicks off at 6:00PM PT/9:00PM ET on June 4, which is 2:00AM BST/11:00AM AEST on June 5. If Sony follows the pattern of previous years, highlights from the show will also be broadcast inside PlayStation Home.

Sony has announced the European end of PSN will be brought down for maintenance this evening starting at 4.00pm and will be brought back online around midnight. Customers will not be able to log into the PS Store, Home, or account management systems. If you sign in before maintenance starts, you should be able to continue playing online. If not, you will have to wait, so plan your play time accordingly. The service will also be brought down next Wednesday, May 9 for maintenance as well.

Sony’s pushed the button on update 1.65 for PlayStation Home. The update includes brings a new menu screen, while the personal voice chat replaces the telephone call system. Furniture slots have also been refined depending on the item of furniture itself.
