Wii U’s Virutal Console store – Nintendo’s marketplace for retro titles – was announced during the company’s latest episode of Nintendo Direct yesterday. Nintendo Direct kicks off at 2pm GMT, and although company president Satoru Iwata has confirmed he will reveal new Wii U titles, eagle-eyed gamers have spotted hints that he will also announce the opening of the console’s Virtual Console store, and that it could contain Gamecube games off the bat.

Games purchased and surveys completed while using the Wii U in Wii Mode do not contribute to Club Nintendo reward earnings, as spotted by NintendoLife and confirmed in a Nintendo FAQ. Nintendo cites a “system constraint” for the limitation, which seems a good reason to keep your original Wii sitting around for a little while longer.

Wii U backwards compatibility functions have been thoroughly tested by the boffins at Digital Foundry. While the site champions Nintendo’s handling of classic Wii games, it has found that while NTSC titles upscale to HD resolution, PAL games will not. Get their findings below.

Donkey Kong Country titles will no longer be available through the Wii shop in Europe as of next week. According to a message on the shop, as of November 25, the titles Donkey Kong Country, Diddy’s Kong Quest and Dixie Kong’s Double Trouble will be removed from Virtual Console. Best nab it before it’s gone if you haven’t already. Thanks, GoNintendo.

Epic Mickey: Power of Illusion has a demo available through Nintendo’s eShop this week as part of the firm’s North American offerings. Ghosts ‘n Goblins hits the 3DS Virtual Console today, and to celebrate, Capcom offered to send a shot glass to the first person to beat the notoriously difficult platformer – and really beat it, not the “tricked by Satan” ending. Although it hasn’t yet been verified, it looks like somebody has already managed it, which even with plenty of practice on the NES original is almost incredible.
