Super Mario Bros. 3, the NES classic often cited as the best of the early Mario games, is on its way to the Nintendo eShop for 3DS and Wii U. The much-requested platformer was quietly added to Nintendo of America’s website over the weekend, heralding a Virtual Console launch, but no release date was provided. Super Mario Bros. 3 launched in the west in 1990 and introduced several soon-to-be iconic features like the Tanooki Suit.

After thanking us for our support, Nintendo has announced that it has suspended the Spotpass feature of its 3DS messaging application Swapnote (Nintendo Letter Box) due to the company discovering that some people have been “exchanging their friend codes on Internet Bulletin Boards” and then using the service to “exchange offensive material”. While the announcement doesn’t specify what the offensive content is, it heavily implies that it’s photographic in nature. This suspension includes all regions and Nintendo doesn’t have an ETA for the service’s return yet.

Nintendo eShop North American update: Pokémon X & Y leads the week along with Devil Survivor Overclocked
Nintendo has updated the North American end of its eShop, and even though Pokémon X & Y doesn’t release until October 12, it is still the big ticket item for the week. To hold you over until then, you can always download Shin Megami Tensei : Devil Survivor Overclocked, Super Black Bass 3D, or some of the other offerings listed below.

Wii U is still getting some high-profile third-party titles, but there’s still a notable absence of a few high-rollers. Still, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of sales & marketing Scott Moffitt has underlined the company’s “strong” relationship with third-parties, and hopes to make the format more attractive to developers moving forward.

Shovel Knight will be released sometime this winter, according to a tweet from developer Yacht Club. The game was originally slated for a release last month, and is available for pre-order on Steam for Linux, Mac, and PC. Upon release it will also be made available for 3DS and Wii U through the eShop. A new video is posted below. The game is also being shown at Nintendo’s booth during IndieCade this weekend. The first trailer for Pier Solar HD, WaterMelon’s successful Kickstarter remake, has been released. The game was shown during at Nintendo’s booth during IndieCade, which is going on this weekend in Los Angeles. Pier Solar and the Great Architects is slated for release on Android, Linux, Mac, Ouya, PC, Wii U eShop and Xbox Live during Q1 2014. It is also coming to Dreamcast via a Limited Edition.
