The upcoming Xbox 360 update has wrought yet another change to Microsoft’s entertainment structure: Zune Marketplace is being retired in favour of two new storefronts, Xbox Music and Xbox Video. Unlimited streaming will still be available, via the Xbox Music Pass, and those with a Zune Music Pass will be able to grab their ten free songs per month as normal. More details are available in a Microsoft FAQ. The main content of the update is the retirement of Microsoft Points in favour of real currency.

Whisperers speaking to the Financial Times suggest Microsoft is producing a remake of classic late 1970′s BBC sci-fi series Blake’s 7. Microsoft is said to have financed the production but not committed to a full series, and Casino Royale director Martin Campbell is believed to be on board. It’s all part of Microsoft’s ongoing entertainment push, which includes a Steven Spielberg-directed Halo series and oodles of cable apps. Xbox Originals was also rumoured to be in talks to resurrect Heroes, too, but nothing has surfaced from that.

The Simpsons writer Al Jean has confirmed that there has – at some point – been talk of an RPG based on Matt Groening’s iconic show, and that more Simpsons games could be on the way following the success of Tapped Out on iOS.

Knightmare, the insanely awesome 1980s fantasy TV show is getting a one-off special as part of YouTube’s Geek Week festival. The string of events runs between August 4-10 and the Knightmare special will see the show’s original cast return. It’s live now.

Two more cable channels have been added to Xbox Live in the US – Comedy central and Nickelodeon. The Comedy Central app includes access to over 6,000 videos of more than 700 comedians, and supports Kinect voice control. The Nickelodeon app was not detailed, but includes Spongebob SquarePants, Sam and Cat, and TMNT. The new apps are part of a huge entertainment push from Microsoft over the last 18 months.
