Organisers at UMB Tech Game Network have confirmed that GDC 2013 drew 23,000 attendees, the largest crowd in the show’s history, which stretches back 26 yuears and has spawned a number of regional and speciality spin-offs. GDC 2014 has been set for March 17-21, once more at the Moscone Center in San Francisco. Check out all our GDC coverage through this link.

Here’s something a bit experimental from GDC – a PhysX tech demo of environmental destruction in Hawken’s multiplayer, powered by GPU Rigid Bodies. There’s some debate over whether this could actually work on current network architecture or if it is naught but a beautiful dream, but the idea of mechs destroying the ground underneath each other to create new paths is pretty sweet. Nintendo thinks the Wii U began the eighth generation of video games hardware; random other people think it’s actually 7th-gen (also known as current-gen for the past seven years). We may be finding out know what the real answer is. First, Frostbite 3 games (including Battlefield 4, Dragon Age 3 and the next Mass Effect) won’t be on Wii U. Next, The Unreal Engine 4 games won’t, either.

Jason Rohrer, designer of Passage, made a thing called A Game for Someone at this year’s Game Design Challenge at GDC. It’s a board game. The theme for the challenge was Humanity’s Last Game, which he interpreted liberally. Strange story inside.

Today at GDC, Bungie gave a presentation on world building in their new IP Destiny, and they showed us a video that they have since put on YouTube for all to enjoy that contains all sort of character art for various races that will be in the game, from concepts to actual animated stuff. It’s pretty cool. Video inside.

Yesterday at GDC, Hideo Kojima said that Metal Gear Ground Zeroes and faux-mysterious Phantom Pain were actually together Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain, and also that Ground Zeroes is the prologue. We interpreted that to mean they are one game, but that is not the case. A Konami spokesperson told GameSpot Ground Zeroes and MGS5 are separate titles. OK.

The International Game Developer Association issued a statement today regarding the GDC party they held this week in conjunction with YetiZen that led to the resignation of Brenda Romero from her co-chair position with the organization. That and comments from the IGDA executive director inside.

The International Game Developers Association held a part in San Francisco for GDC Tuesday night featuring some scantily clad dancers on a stage, and as you might expect not everybody is happy with this turn of events. Game designer Brenda Romero, co-chair of the IGDA’s Women in Games SIG, resigned from the group in response.

Dragon Age 3: Inquisition lead writer David Gaider has said at GDC that the industry will not fully embrace the notion of female stars unless there is clear financial motivation to do so. The old belief is that female character don’t sell, and this is a view Gaider would very much like to see challenged.

iPi Mocap Studio 2 has launched on Steam. It’s a marker-less capture tool that allows users to record actions using a variety of devices. It can support up to two Kinect sensors or up to six PlayStation Eye cameras to capture full 3D movements.

DayZ creator Dean Hall gave a lecture at GDC last night, in which he argued that complexity and a lack of hand-holding is positive. Letting players figure things out for themselves is a cornerstone of the game’s appeal, and will live on in DayZ Standalone he explained.

Necrosoft CEO Brandon Sheffield confirmed that Gunhouse and Oh Deer! are heading to PS Mobile at GDC last night. Both games borne out of last year’s ‘What would Molydeux?’ game jam. They sound bonkers.

Battlefield 4 developer Patrick Bach has stated that gamers are no longer impressive with raw showings of tech, as seen in the game’s GDC reveal trailer. According to Bach, what’s important now is how DICE uses that tech to further the payer’s experience.
