DICE 2012: Analyst panel discusses whether current publishing model is broken or agreeable
Industry analysts Michael Pachter and Jesse Divnich questioned the validity of game publishers during a panel at DICE 2012 yesterday, with the former stating he feels “the traditional publisher’s role has lessened” over years, while the later feel that without publishers, there’s “no way” for gamers to experience the various offerings on the market.

DICE 2012: Unreal Engine 4 to be revealed “later this year,” says Epic
Epic Games vice president Mark Rein has told G4 that the firm plans to unveil Unreal Engine 4 later this year. Speaking with the site during DICE 2012, Rein was quoted as saying: “People are going to be shocked later this year when they see Unreal Engine 4 and how much more profound an effect it will have.” G4 expects more on the firm’s engine to he shown at DICE later today. If the firm is showing anything like it did at GDC 2011 with its Samaritan tech demo, then, wow.

The Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences has announced a new session for the 2012 D.I.C.E. Summit featuring Epic’s Mike Capps, Insomniac’s Ted Price, and Blizzard’s Frank Pearce. Todd Howard to provide opening keynote at 2012 D.I.C.E. Summit
The AIAS has announced that Bethesda’s Todd Howard will be providing the opening keynote during the D.I.C.E. Summit. Howard’s talk will focus on game development and player experience and is titled “Why We Create, Why We Play.” “The 2012 D.I.C.E. Summit will kick off with one of the most distinguished creative minds of our time with Todd Howard as our Opening Keynote speaker,” said Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences president Martin Rae in the press release. “Todd’s many contributions to the industry have greatly advanced our understanding of player interaction and engagement. His games take players on journeys through distant fantasy worlds and post apocalyptical universes that are driving a new generation of entertainment.” D.I.C.E. will take place February 7-9 in Las Vegas, Nevada at the Red Rock Resort.

Hirshberg, Jaffe, Xbox creator to speak at D.I.C.E.
D.I.C.E. organisers have announced that Eat, Sleep, Play head David Jaffe, Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg and Xbox creator Sheamus Blackley are all to speak at the development event in Las Vegas next February. NPD’s Anita Frazier and Texas Instruments executive director Delores M. Etter will also give sessions at the event. Tomonobu Itagaki of Valhalla Game Studios, EA’s Richard Hilleman and Epic’s Tim Sweeney, as part of his AIAS Hall of Fame acceptance, are all also due to give speeches next year, as previously confirmed.

Epic’s Tim Sweeney to be inducted into AIAS Hall of Fame
The Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences has announced it’ll induct Epic co-founder Tim Sweeney into its Hall of Fame at DICE next year. Sweeney, who will also give a talk at the event for the first time, is the 16th person to go into the Hall of Fame, joining Will Wright, Shigeru Miyamoto and last year’s inductees the BioWare doctors, Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk. AIAS president Martin Rae said the group was “honored to add Tim Sweeney to our Hall of Fame. His unrelenting and innovative work on behalf of developers and gamers has created the imaginative games that help to drive the success of our industry.”

Itagaki among first confirmed D.I.C.E 2012 speakers
D.I.C.E organisers have announced the first speakers for next year’s event. Valhalla Game Studios boss Tomonobu Itagaki and EA chief creative officer Richard Hilleman. Grammy winner Glen Ballard and military contractor Isaac Gilmore will also be at the event in Las Vegas between February 8-10.
