DICE 2012: Analyst panel discusses whether current publishing model is broken or agreeable

Industry analysts Michael Pachter and Jesse Divnich questioned the validity of game publishers during a panel at DICE 2012 yesterday, with the former stating he feels “the traditional publisher’s role has lessened” over years, while the later feel that without publishers, there’s “no way” for gamers to experience the various offerings on the market.

DICE 2012: Unreal Engine 4 to be revealed “later this year,” says Epic

Epic Games vice president Mark Rein has told G4 that the firm plans to unveil Unreal Engine 4 later this year. Speaking with the site during DICE 2012, Rein was quoted as saying: “People are going to be shocked later this year when they see Unreal Engine 4 and how much more profound an effect it will have.” G4 expects more on the firm’s engine to he shown at DICE later today. If the firm is showing anything like it did at GDC 2011 with its Samaritan tech demo, then, wow.

Warren Spector to get GDC Lifetime Achievement Award

Junction Point boss Warren Spector will be the recipient of this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award at GDC, organisers have announced. The ex-Ion Storm head, who created Deus Ex, Thief and System Shock at Looking Glass, will pick up the award at the Game Developers Choice Awards on March 7. GDC GM Meggan Scavio said Spector’s career to date “exemplifies the exact qualities that a Lifetime Achievement Award recipient should possess.”

Max packs a massive weapon in latest Max Payne 3 video and screens

Rockstar has announced the official launch of the Max Payne 3 website, and with it the first in a series of “interactive features”focusing on the weapons in the game. The first of these features, a video showing the 608 Bull revolver, is posted below. The gun is very large and contains eight rounds of “staggering firepower” which can be deployed rather accurately over short distances. If you head on through the link, you will become privy to the first details on one of the “most vicious cartels” in Max Payne 3, the Comando Sombra. The game is out on PS3 and Xbox 360 May 15 and on PC May 29 in the US and June 1 in Europe.
