World of Warplanes is trickier than it looks, and since the MMO looks like flying planes around that’s saying something. This latest video from Wargaming hopes to educate players in how to choose the best ammo belt for the task at hand – an important tactical decision limited by your choice of plane.

World of Tanks’ next update will see the debut of Japanese tanks once version 8.10 is released. The tanks come with two tech tree branches extending out to a roster of 14 vehicles total. Four light tanks include the Type 5 He-Ko, nine medium tanks include the STB-1, and the Type 3 Chi-Nu Kai as a Premium medium tank. Version 8.10 will also introduce a major overhaul to the game’s lighting system, with a new approach to how light and shadow works in the game world to improve the level of realism within. The full list of changes and additions will be revealed soon, according to Wargaming.

Wargaming is entering the mobile space by funding a new Seattle-based studio headed up by Z2 founder David Bluhm. “We think mobile games is still a relatively new space with massive upside,” Bluhm told VentureBeat regarding the as-of-yet unnamed studio. “Mobile is ripe for innovative and new core game mechanics.” The studio also includes former Blue Manchu and EA PopCap’s Joe McDonagh and other former Z2 staffers. Wargaming.net has released a trailer showing off the new German steel featured in World of Tanks’ 8.9 update. The update also features some new Chinese premium tanks, including another revision on the classic T-34 as well as a new 7 on 7 mode. There’s also a new map called Northwest, which is based on (you guessed it) the pacific northwest. After the break, a trailer with a lot of really fun German tank names.

With Gas Powered Games now owned by Wargaming, and with the studio also owning the rights to Total Annihilation, GPG founder Chris Taylor has pretty much said, without saying, that a follow-up to the RTS game is “alive and well”. Without going as far as to announce it as being in the works, Taylor said the following instead (per PC Gamer): “In so far as other RTS properties that I am capable of working on – and I think you know what I’m talking about, I don’t even need to be coy – I think that nerd is alive and well. It’s just not an area I’m ready to talk about yet. But you can use your imagination, even though you’re not on the project. You’re welcome to use your imagination, your imagination will serve you well in this case.”

Nvidia and Wargaming.net have teamed up for the GeForce eSports World of Tanks 3v3 Tournament Amateur Division. The 128 team tournament offers a prize pool of 1 million in-game gold, and the two companies will pony up $5,000 cash which will be donated to veteran’s charities with an additional $5,000 garnered from registration fees, in-game gold and PC hardware. World of Tanks update 8.8 hits later this week with new Soviet medium sized tanks for tiers six through eight as well as changes to the German tech tree. It also comes with the new Tundra arena. Wargaming has launched its Unified Account System for World of Tanks and World of Warplanes. The system promises players will no longer have to pay for “premium status in every project,” as the system spreads benefits across the company’s other titles. This will also give players access to all MMOs developed by the company using a single portal, thus logging you into all other Wargaming-related projects, including partner and fan websites using secure OpenID authentication.
