Today’s the day, friends; fantasy MMORPG Rift is now free to play. Trion Worlds is determined to keep Rift fair for all players, whether they choose to pay or not – no restrictions on levels or content, and all the best items must be earned in-game, not bought in a shop. To get things off on the right foot, the developer has released the Empyreal Assault update which includes a stack of new content available to everybody – a new zone called Dendrome, a ten player raid, a Chronicle and open-world raid bosses. Trion Worlds has laid off as many as 100 employees, according to various sources on the net. Some say the lay-off count is as high as 80% – a percentage Trion states is “grossly exaggerated.”

Trion Worlds’ Defiance launches locally on April 11, and the tie-in SyFy series wll be quick to follow. Local Foxtel channel SF Australia has announced the first of 13 episodes will air on April 18, about 55 hours after its US debut. Tune in at 9:30PM EST, and keep a special eye out for Australian lead Grant Bowler as Nolan. The MMO will be available on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

RIFT producer Hal Hanlin has left Trion Worlds after four and a half years in order to take on a new role as lead producer at Zynga. “Nothing but love for Trion, but with the maturation of Rift, there was no urgent demand for my specific skillset,” the developer wrote on Facebook.

Trion has released the second episode of the Ark Hunter Chronicles Series for Defiance. The seven part series takes a look into the multiplayer online shooter which releases in April. Watch the episode “Born to Hunt” below. There’s also a new multiplayer trailer below as well (thanks, Splatterhouse).Upon release, the game will be made available on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.

RIFT Update 2.2 update will release next week, and as part of the MMO’s second anniversary celebrations, the Carnival of the Ascended is returning. The event will include two new games, prizes, a dragon parade, and other goodies. The update also comes with the new Steppes of Infinity zone event, the new 2nd Tier PvP Planar Attunement, and Tier 3 regular Planar Attunement. Former subs can also come back for free March 21 -25, and current subs can participate in an anniversary bonus event from March 21 -April 4 which gives them a 20% increase to various stats and gains.
