TimeGate: No Plans for Section 8 demo on PC

TimeGate Studios has told readers on the Section 8 official forums that there will not be a demo released for the PC version of the game.
“We do not have plans to release a Section 8 demo for the PC at this time,” reads the thread. “Currently, we only have a demo for the Xbox 360 version.”
Sorry PC players, you will just have to take your chances with the retail version, which was released yesterday.
Unless, of course, you also own an Xbox 360. Still, that doesn’t give you an idea of how it plays on PC.
Thanks, Blue.

Former Gamecock contract employees suing SouthPeak for not paying up

SouthPeak Interactive has been accused of not paying of debtors as it agreed upon during its purchase of Gamecock in 2008.
According to a former producer for Gamecock, SouthPeak promised former contract employees that their money was “in the mail”, but checks have yet to arrive.
“I can think of no reason why my four work-for-hires would not be paid, especially once SouthPeak’s lawyer contacted them early on and acknowledged that their invoices were good and would be honored and paid in full,” he told Joystiq. “Ever since then, for nearly a year, they have been told a check would be sent very soon. At one point, approximately 8 months ago, they were even told that their checks were in the mail.”
Outstanding debuts claimed by individual vendors are various in size, running from $320 to over $3000 and former co-owner of Gamecock, Mike Wilson, says there’s no excuse for SouthPeak to be holding out.
“These [invoices] ranged from our testing house, Cyan Worlds, who ended up doing huge layoffs because of non-payment, to the big magazine and website publishers, to the smallest of companies and individuals hired for webwork, video production, packaging, you name it,” he said. “800 dollars to 800,000 dollars, they were all given essentially the same treatment.
“All moneys owed and receivables booked were disclosed in detail before the transaction could close, with us and our investors having to sign declaring that this was ‘everything’,” he said.
SouthPeak’s purchase of Gamecock supposedly placed the company financially in the red, and claims state that payments to vendors would prove financially difficult, if not unlikely.
There’s loads more over on Joystiq, and it is a rather good read. You should go have a look.

Section 8 multiplayer to allow user-created choke points

TimeGate Studios’ Robert Siwiak has said that the multiplayer in Section 8 will give players access to deployables instead of base building and the ability to create choke points.
“Playing a lot of other first-person shooters out there, I’m sure that many players can relate with finding this level designer-placed machine gun turret or something like that that always seems to be pointing in the wrong direction from where you want it,” the game director told Gamasutra.
“A direct counter to this was, well we couldn’t necessarily have base building in Section 8. The next best thing was giving players access to deployables — automated turrets or supply depots or sensor rays.
“The player can either, in one circumstance, if there’s a key bridge between two control points, can call down turrets to help defend that choke point and otherwise create that choke point that otherwise wasn’t there, or he can create on the edge of the map a forward staging area where he’s got the supply depot and other support structures that will otherwise help assault an enemy base that he’s got his sights keyed in on.”
Sure beats have a vacant turret with nothing but a wall to shoot at.

Pirates vs. Ninjas Dodgeball launches in Europe

Somewhat randomly, Southpeak’s announced the release of Pirates vs. Ninjas Dodgeball for Wii.
It’s about pirates and ninjas playing dodgeball on Wii.
“The aim was to create a fun and exciting game for Wii that made the most of this rivalry in an energetic game that makes perfect use of Wii’s motion-sensing controls,” said Southpeak’s Sarah Brockhurst.
May as well give it a waz, innit. PR after the break.

SouthPeak reports 76% jump in revenue

SouthPeak has reported a 76 percent increase in revenue for the three month ending December 2008.
The period brought in $17.3 million compared to the same quarter in 2007, in which the company reported revenue of $4.2 million.
“We are very pleased with our solid financial results for the quarter,” said SouthPeak chairman Terry Phillips.
“We attribute the strong financial results to our diversified portfolio, tightly managed costs, and strict supervision of the retail channel and field inventory levels.”
SouthPeak said demand for DS’s My Baby contributed to the strong quarter.

Renegade Kid cancels Dracula game Son of the Dragon

Renegade Kid has announced that “fantasy Gothic” game Son of the Dragon has been canceled.
“It brings us no pleasure to announce that it is no longer in development,” said a post on the company’s site.
“The intellectual property is still owned by Renegade Kid. Should an opportunity to resurrect Son of the Dragon present itself in the future, you will be the first to know.”
The game was to be released under Gamecock, but when SouthPeak acquired the company it didn’t take Son of the Dragon along with Velvet Assassin and Legendary.
Renegade Kid, however, says in that post that it’s currently at work on a “new secret game to be announced in 2009″.
Thanks, Gamasutra.

Velvet Assassin releases for PC and Xbox 360 on April 14. While we’re on the subject, IGN has three new in-game screens posted for it here.

Come March, Europe will geta taste of Southpeak’s Mushroom Men when they finally land on DS and Wii.
Mushroom Men: The Spore Wars is a 3D platformer in its Wii incarnation, while Mushroom Men: Rise of the Fungi is a side-scrolling action prequel to the former for DS.
